Nokia talk to us!

I Think nokia should put a couple of reps on this forum to give us real information about what ever they know.

for instance everyone is speculating on the reboot/ everyone is speculating on the fact if it doesnt get fixed by software/ will we get replacements. Can it be fixed with software or is it hardware.

everyone is speculating on what is gonna be included in the f/w update

what are the excuses for us not having one yet.

whats in the works. what features could we see.

i understand they wont be able to tell us everything- but it would be nice to get a few deffinites or at least nokias stance on the subjects in hand.

what do you guys think. Is this all to pie in the sky for a corporation to give back to its customers?. is it viable?. would it be any help?, would they get flamed of the boards?

Yes, pay developers to post on forums! :D
Personally I'd love it but I doubt Nokia's interested in any way :)

I read somewhere that patience was a virtue.

Just relax. Go Outside. Talk to a member of the opposite (or same, whatever) sex.

You will DEFINITELY know as soon as everyone else does when the next firmware is released. You'll have a pretty good idea what's different in the release as well.

You should have seen the massive speculation preceding the iPhone 1.1 release. And the 1.2 release. And the 1.3, 2.0, 2.1, and 2.5 releases. I don't recall any of my buddies at Apple posting anything then, either.

this is funnily enough(patronising yes) the total truth . i have been marooned in the snow for 4 days and i am going crazy- my post count on here has gone from 50 to about 500.

They do post on the forums. Peter: http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=19719

I believe an answer was given regarding the rebooting issue as well in one of the threads.

For the things included in the firmware update, check the bug reports. The bugs listed as fixed are more than likely included in the update. Here's an indication: http://marcin.juszkiewicz.com.pl/200...-n900-bringsk/

Dude... thats the 2nd gen hardware and third (or 6th, depending on how you count) gen software for the iPhone.

If you had bought the 1st gen iphone on day 1, you would wait 6 months for your first significant update, and 18 months for your first non-Apple app.

So seriously, go make a snowman or something ;)

i have no idea why people like you cant think logoically and base customer service on what we want as consumers- not basing it on other bad experiences bny other manufacturers.

thanks for the info- i checked his profile. his last post was in nov 2009- before the product was even out- the ***** hits the fan on realese and this marketing man hasnt come back to face the consequences- i think the lad was saying that the nokias are out and ovi store is about to be open;;; lol

and yes i know about he the bug fixes- but we have no idea which ones are gonna be dealt with and we dont know officially from nokia when or if they will happen.

Re: Nokia talk to us!

The software/firmware status is one issue and that could be or is being answered in the various maemo.org forums, bugzilla database, etc.

But what about the physical hardware? E.g. is Nokia looking into the problem with the chrome trim ring around the camera that seriously affects the flash? Is a "chrome ring replacement program" in the works? Or will that never happen?

mysticrokks 2010-01-09 00:50

Re: Nokia talk to us!

brigor its not being answered at all- we should be told that if the f/w cant fix the reboots then we will be entitled to brand new hardware- if you go on these boards it can feel like we are deffo getting the update- we may not- i need assurances- we all do as consmuers.

There are several people from Nokia posting on this forum. The fact that they are silent these days might be due to holiday season.

No need to be so nasty whenever "iPhone" is mentioned.
Nokia has a lot to learn from "iPhone" and Apple if they want to continue to be a leader.

Also, N900 isn't Nokia's 1st gen phone imo.

They've had plenty of experience. (previous OS2006-2008 also) Hence they did an overhaul for Maemo5 and will again for Maemo 6. Just coz it's the 1st phone with Maemo5 (an most likely the LAST), it shouldn't be just work-in-progress or some half-arsed phone when released. (I'm not saying that N900 is "that" bad but it not too far from the truth either) If that was the case with iphone, it wouldn't have taken off as well as it did. They just knew what the general public wanted.

N900 is for the geeks / developers. Period. Yes, it's not too difficult to use, but my wife reckons it's too confusing still. Same for my mum, dad and my non-IT friends. It's just not as "simple" as the iphone or even Symbian phones. Hopefully Maemo6 will cater for both. (well, personally, I don't care if it doesn't cater for everyone. I prefer it more geeky. Geekier, the better. :D)

back on topic,

I would love for Nokia to share a bit more with us. Without us here, they are not going to succeed in making a better maemo phone. (Right now, we are like an extra 100000 workers for Nokia basically... :p) We want it better as much as Nokia wants it better. So share some inside info, release nightly builds of new firmware etc. (we do for our apps, why can't firmwares be released like this also? Just put some big RED warning and a disclaimer. Easy.)

Re: Nokia talk to us!

If I were Nokia, I wouldn't talk quite yet... why?

Because the pending update isn't out yet, people are frothing at the mouth over various things... I'd settle the "low-hanging fruit" items first and then address the people in an orderly way.

jakiman 2010-01-09 01:58

Re: Nokia talk to us!

Lack of communication is the worst you can do.

You will lose customers / potential customers left right and center while staying quiet.

Just saying, "we are now targetting for the new firmware to come out by end of Jan and expect some nice surprises" would actually sell more N900's. Giving hope, as proven by many types of religions, can do a world of good.

mysticrokks 2010-01-09 02:12

Re: Nokia talk to us!

what i am bothered most about is knowing if the reboot issue is gonna be resolved- and what will happen if it isnt!

this is something nokia should be announcing.

Nokia representatives have mentioned the temp fix for users that have rebooting machines-- but how long is tempoary, we need to know that if it does take 10 months to fix it, can we get an exchange anytime b4, if its not fixed can we get a replacement.

what i have heard is that people are having problems getting exchange phones- to be honest i am not sure why- but its happening. if we send these units back under warranty- what are they gonna do- are they gonna just reflash our devices with power mode off at 0, and send them back.

this fix is not good enough - all though my machine works ok, my battery isnt usable all day. its a shame.

jakiman 2010-01-09 02:20

Re: Nokia talk to us!

I must be lucky. Both of N900 I got has never rebooted or locked up.
Even with tons of devel apps installed.

Re: Nokia talk to us!

thats good to know jaikman

sometimes i wish i had just sent mine back the day i got it and didnt come on here to find out the solotion.

that is what i would have done with any other product.

agogo 2010-01-09 12:12

Official Vs. Unofficial Development

I love the N900 and really appreciate the openness of Maemo. It makes all end-users feel that we're part of a bigger project.
I think the official development team will need to be more open about what's happening in the background, especially by updating everyone about the features and timelines of the next firmware releases.
The main aim of this is to streamline their efforts and the efforts of individual developers and avoid duplicating work.
I also feel that there are many issues that will need an official announcement to avoid speculations and rumors, like the firmware release date, portrait mode, MMS, MfE support and other annoyances.
What do you think?
