How difficult to tear down an N900?

I was wondering, does anyone have good pictures, or steps to get the unit apart to the point where one can see the USB port. I am not interested in taking any more apart than necessary (and in full disclosure, I have yet to have any issues).

I am seriously considering conducting an expoyology on my unit, to build a supporting casket of high strength, non-conductive resin with some aramid fibers added to it. I know this sounds totally like overkill, but as I travel for work and pleasure, there will be times where this is my only computer, and I just know the part will fail just as it is most needed. That kind of failure is not acceptable. If I step on it and break it, well I have nobody to blame but myself.

For those that want to flame, keep it to yourselves. I have reasoned through this, and am asking this question to assess risk, that is all.

Thanks in advance.

is your name thor?

if it is its a great name.

ok enough of the nice stuff, lets get to it.

its a nice idea , you obviously want to do this as well as make it safe- but cant you carry a spare battery and a battery charger around(one that only holds the battery) . this way at least if it does fail you can allways get back into your pocket pc. and you wont invalid your warranty.

maybe this is something you could consider once you rwarranty ones out.

i have a sick feeling that your paranoia could cost you your n900- if you get inside and break it now to save it from breaking later- how ironic!

There is a video on the web, and somewhere on this forum...just google "n900 teardown". I took mine apart because USB port came out and it was pretty simple. I just used a micro flathead screwdriver, and not a Torx, and all 6 screws came out fine. Just be careful taking out the antenna, if you need to. The plastic that surrounds the metal part of the antenna scratches very, very easily.

It seems not too hard, check out this video. I think you'll find it the easiest to follow about it-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVEHm325-z8

I appreciate all the quick responses. Yes, my name is Thor, and thanks. As for the video, I have watched it but felt they spent way to much time taking the screen apart (and the video fails at 3.40 for me) and therefore I didn't really get a good view of the area I was interested in. If, however, that is the best there is then I will make do with it. Thanks again, all.

Hi Thor, I happened to bumped into a Nokia Service Manual from the internet a while back. The pictures and instructions are pretty clear and I thought that may be something you are looking for. PM me if you are interested as I'm not sure if it's okay for me to post it here.

Thanks, hwong_pz, I am going to look at this carefully, perhaps there is also another method beyond the one I mentioned.

Re: How difficult to tear down an N900?

hwong_pz, I was able to open the original document and studied it carefully. The jury is still out on what I am going to do. It was nice to see that nokia had put so much thought into all the other aspects of the device, I was particularly taken with the placement of their headphone plug, and how it actually sits in the case and the main board just rubs on it, makes it very simple to replace/maintain... same with camera replacement. I didn't realize that this device was so modular. That puts my warranty in much better standing, perhaps even "upgrades" are possible in the future. Who knows. So, I will need to think this through. However, your email and link was highly appreciated. Would love to see updated versions of this document as more refinements are made, to see how the hardware evolves. Thanks again.

Re: How difficult to tear down an N900?

A bit interresting is point 15 in Nokias dismantling guide:

15: While reloving the engine board, be careful not to damage the USB connector.

So, dismantling the N900 can damage the USB connector. I just wonder, of the reports of USB ports coming off, how many have dismantled their N900? ;)
