Firefox 1.0 released

I got 1.0 updated which override my RC1.

However, I still like to run the built in browser. I believe the built in browser resident in the memory so it load faster.

Agreed, I installed RC1 the day after it came out and was pissed off by how slow it was compared to the built in Browser. I love firefox and talk all my friends into using it, but not on my 900. It's slow as molasses.

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

Is this version of firefox slow for anyone else?

Its very slow to start up, slow to use and slow to load pages...

Great to have options but I think I will stick with the built in browser for now.

nope

not good enough yet

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

Seems to be too slow for real use, yeah. Unfortunate that it's such a dog, the interface does look interesting and being able to load extensions would be pretty cool.

Still, alternatives are always nice to try at least, Neither Midori nor this just seem to be even close to what MicroB offers atm.

I will give ANYONE a million dollar if you can explain to me why they continue to release all these beta 1 through 6 or RC1 ect. when it is just too DAMM SLOW TO USE?? It's just USELESS...seriously, what is THE DAMM POINT of releasing something that is not useable?? I don't give a damm if the interface is looking nice!

My device every DAMM date EVER since i got the device to tell me to update FIREFOX!! SCREWED IT!! I never bother!

I've always viewed Firefox browser as being high quality and fast on the PC, even the interim beta releases.

Why the hell are they destroying their own reputation by releasing this crap so early?

Because the point is to get it out, have people use it on a wide range of devices, report issues, etc..that's why software goes through alpha, beta, and RC.

Because on PC you have alot more devices to test with. While mobile devices are limited (e.g. you can only test it if you own said mobile device).

Has anyone installed the Mozilla Runtime program? I'm not clear how it's supposed to be used, but Firefox seems faster now.

If this solves the problem, PM me for the address where to send the million bucks.

Well, how the hell you test it when it's unusable and froze up? And this is not just beta 4 or 5...in EVERY SINGLE update...it STILL SLOW and FROZE IT! I am sure by now they're sick of complaining about that slow issue. Maybe it is not meant for N900 as it is not powerful enough to run such a robust browser. If that is the case, they better scratch it and start over because there ain't nothing wrong with the default browser and it does run pretty fast.

You can tell them what's slow exactly. What sites are the loading times particularly bad (not just the entire thing is slow). That way they can look at the source code of the website to see what's throwing a wrench into its rendering).

Are you kidding? It is slow at everything, from bringing up the bookmarks list to exiting. When I try to switch tasks, Maemo gives up waiting and offers to kill it. A pity, its very good, aside from being like treacle. Does anyone know why the arrow keys sometimes work for scrolling, and sometimes not?

I am really disappointed from Firefox. It is my favorite browser on PC. On N900 is very slow. And how to configure it ? Where is options tab ?

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

Hopefully this will get working a bit better soon. There is a video somewhere of some dev guys using it and its faster than the built in browser but then i suppose they cant release it unitll everthing has been tested properly.

As said inalot of posts on here and elsewhere about the n900, if your gonna add the extras-devel and extras-testing repositories (plus other alpha/beta/RC/non official releases) then you will have to be willing to put up with issues in speed and stability. If not then just stick to the two that are enabled on the phone when you had it and wiat for the to show up.

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

sounds like you guys on the n900 got the shaft. while not the best, it is certainly not useless or dogslow on the n810 and certainly more compatible with websites than the built-in browser --- other than gmail, of course. it just needs further optimization, google bookmarks, and copy/ paste features.

How about playing video content outside the browser?

My experience exactly! I rather use Firefox than MicroB of Diablo. Firefox is already good on N810 and I believe it will be great after few more revisions. I'm not using MicroB anymore.

Thirded!!!!

Works like a dream on my N810 also - really like it.

Geolocation also works on it, which it don't on microb....

I tried Youtube when I got my tablet a year ago and realized that the playback wasn't really smooth wiht MicroB. I tried again and same result. Sound is good but video itself is choppy.
But having said that, the Mobile Firefox is even worse. I can also hear the sound well but I cannot use video controls at all and video is slide show which changed few times in minute. :o But it doesn't really freeze my tablet. Scrolling of the page works like charm when playing video.

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

While Firefox on the N900 is painfully slow right now, I'm pretty confident that it will improve.

Meanwhile the default browser is imo excellent. That's the irony of this: we are pretty soon going to have two high quality browers while we may be lacking in some other areas.

Re: Firefox 1.0 released

it's slow when loading. i believe the default browser is resident in the memory while Firefox have to load MB of data to memory.

With the latest system update PR 1.1 and the browser being current, I have to admit that this occurs, yes. Not tried removing my fennec user profile though which is said to cure incompatibilities from previous versions.

On the other hand the latest fennec and the PR1.1 lead to a tremendous performance improvement which rendered it almost completely useful for me.
