I have more free space in rootfs after the update. About 8 to 10 MB more.

Yikes, that sounds like a regression not an improvement. :(

If you're wearing headphones somewhere quiet so that other people won't be disturbed by your phone, you don't want it to suddenly start making a noise.

Besides, if you're listening on headphones, why would you want it ring on speakers?

Update went fine and everything seems to be running ok. But now I seem to have "Documents", "Images" etc. folders twice in file manager. Weird...

Edit: Seems to be a known bug.

Just reiterating what others have mentioned post-successful-upgrade at a high level.

- scrolling between desktops and apps seems faster/crisper.

- media player scrolling is significantly improved. It seems media player no longer needs to re-populate the album or artist list ever time it is accessed, so you can now immediately begin scrolling through the list.

- I too see the updated App Manager links, but no Ovi Store access yet (I'm east coast US).

Overall, a very snappy upgrade experience so far.

It took me a little while to figure out how to deal with that.

Try plugging in your USB cable and selecting "PC Suite Mode". It should then let you make a backup to your N900's internal memory.

You may pr may not need to quick the Backup application and cancel the Firmware update before activating PC Suite Mode (I did just to be safe).

A++

I have the same problem: updated manually and then I get old firmware version in settings->about.

Actually after updating, the 1.2009.44 update showed up in application manager... but I couldn't install!!! I was low on battery.
The weird thing is that it was only a 15kb update... but after turning on the phone again, the update was gone....

So, probably we're missing just some file (that 15kb update...)

*wow this thread is moving at a good clip ;)*

I'm confused by this as well because with the original firmware, the behaviour seemed to be set to 'regression mode' already.

That is - alert sounds (ringing, sms, email, etc.) were being played through not only the headphones, but the device's loudspeakers. Definitely not the way I want it to behave.

Now some people seem to be reporting that there has been a change in the way it's working, but my N900 is still just as anti-social as ever. That is - it's still broadcasting alerts to the world even when headphones are plugged in.. :(

Not sure what to make of this, especially as this update isn't supposed to be fixing anything of that sort in the first place..

If it's in Extras it should be optified. If it's in Extras-testing it should be, but may not be. If it's in Extras-devel, all bets are off. If it's a random .deb you downloaded and installed, it's probably not.

So basically it's hit and miss and there is no way to look from your device what program is optified? Sounds pretty wierd for people like me who has gotten used to just look in windows for programs directory and check how much it takes space (since win 3.11 or actually dos :P).

yippeee! Just what everyone has been asking for :-)

Probably been said in this thread, but just been skimming, AFAICT they've finally ditched red pill mode after all this time. At least I can't get it.

Seems they have extended some of the [weird] auto-correct to other fields (good step, I'll have to see if it quits suggesting words like "suggestly" and where else it shows up and whether it still randomly stops working in some apps like modest), but it's now in password-type fields. I went to setup a wifi wpa key and when entering, it advanced ahead of the wording auto-correcting with all asterisks. Very confusing, but even more interesting is what I was typing was not a dictionary word (perhaps gaelic?).

Some reason the update horked wifi so I'm off to reflash (this is the first time I've had to do it w/out expecting it). Probably something on my end though.

Hopefully the successor this is setting us up for relieves many problems and wouldn't it be nice if some of the WONTFIXs actually showed up (doubtful, but sure would be nice to have a proper email client including better IMAP support, BT KB support, and a simple addition to internet connections dialogue (or better also have in power button dropdown) to disable/enable wifi easily. And, hopefully, it's not that far off - I'd like to start using this full time and stop carrying a backup so I can get my $700 out of it (yes, $650 since I pre-ordered, but I have 9.9% sales tax in my area).

Not at all, linux with the debian package system is infinitely more precise than windows.

Windows has (superficially, but not really) a directory per app, linux apps share directories according to purpose. That's not to say you can't find this out--there's a tool for everything in linux. Type

dpkg -S <file>

and it will tell you which package installed the file. It's very nice...

But you missed my point. You just don't install apps from -devel and -testing and then there's no question which of your apps are optified...

Still I´m having problems really understanding this scattering of programs to bin, lib, etc, var etc. Is there easy way to look what program is optified and what is not. I´m not interested what packages are installed i´m interested where they are installed and how much they take space.
dpkg -S Bounce didn't tell me anything but from your hint there should be some file?

I can not get the update...it says Operation failed and no updates available.

I can not even go to App manager and uninstall any apps?? My apps is not showing...keep saying "no applications installed," which is bs.

Restart and try again...still won't work. It wasn't like this last night and i didn't install anything.

Here's the simplest answer to your question: if you at any time accepted the warning given in the preamble to all descriptions of how to enable Extras-devel or Extras-testing repository, and installed one or more apps from those repositories, you should know about it. And those are the only candidates if you've got unoptified packages installed. If in doubt, uninstall all the ones you installed from the testing and development repos.

And you'll be fine.

Now, if your question is how do you know which packages are the offenders when looking through your root partition and finding large files, the dpkg -S is what you want.

Quote:

dpkg -S Bounce didn't tell me anything but from your hint there should be some file?
dpkg -S /opt/bounce/bin/bounce

returns:
bounce

Which is the name of the package that file belongs to. Obviously this is a trivial case, but it is useful if you are browsing through your rootfs and find a big file, and want to know what package put it there.

"Bounce" is not a filename anywhere on your system, which is why it didn't return anything. "bounce" would have returned a bunch of entries, most of them (not surprising) belonging to the bounce package.

This post and the one it quoted may also be useful for you if you are trying to track down the culprits:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...7&postcount=19

But the easiest way to be sure, as i said, is to remove anything in testing or development.

Firmware update worked flawlessly for me here in US @ Connecticut. Also it gave me about 20mb free space in rootfs which is reaaaally nice :) Maemo also runs a little speedier, but not sure if it's actually the firmware or just me. Anyhow it's a great update + working ovi store :))

There is a more real solution - read http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=33429
You can download X-Terminal shell script from http://pastebin.com/f1355fe1f and execute it to find out how much root file space is consumed by each package. But don't try to move files with this script if you don't understand the process - it can be dangerous and difficult to fix.

BTW, the solution "remove applications installed from Extras-devel or Extras-testing" does not work actually - most of them pulls HUGE libraries to root file space and that libraries are NOT automatically removed by application removal. You should target it specifically with red pill ON + careful research of packages dependencies OR use 'dpkg autoremove' from X-Terminal root shell... with some luck...

haha the update added more to the rootfs then it took for me. but then again i had recently reflashed and reinstalled everything so it was at 68 percent. now it's up to 71. oh well.

Starting updating, took forever, then at the end it said "Error Encountered with Nokia Software Updater", then nothing, won't turn on at all now.

I'm really fed up with all this ****. I love the phone, but Nokia needs to realize just because they have something allot of people want releasing a product with the same 'Shitty *** CS and product support' is not going to bump them back up in the cell world.

I've been very reserved up until now with voicing complaints as I didn't have any issues before, probably because I didn't download PC Suite or NSU.

**** it, returning the phone for full refund. Will revisit the product over summer to see if it's gotten any better though I doubt it considering Nokia half the time doesn't know wtf is going on their regions.

You can download X-Terminal shell script ...

Well i did say it was the simplest solution. I think you made a good job of verifying that it's also the most real, though: installing -devel packages is asking for trouble if you're not comfortable with the unix filesystem and command line apt tools. As that is common knowledge, it's acceptable to tell users worried about their rootfs to uninstall said apps and leave it at that.

He's talking about windows and file explorer to peep his disk usage...

and you're suggesting a shell script. :D

Hopefully one of the two suggestions will get the job done, but it's a disservice to ordinary users to claim that the "real" usage of the device will require shell scripts and "some luck".

Re: New firmware released! Minor update PR1.0.1 needed for upcoming PR1.1

I didn't see the update listed in App Manager here (US) until doing the following in X-Terminal:

- sudo gainroot
- apt-get clean
- apt-get update

Then the update appeared, which I ran. Rebooted no problem, but performance lagged between screen-clicks/button-pushes. Another reboot cycle (including battery-removal & re-seating it to un-freeze it) and everything cleared up.

Within an hour of the Maemo update, updates appeared in App Manager for Evernote, Qik, & Foreca.

Will keep my eyes peeled for noticeable changes, but from the 'Details' pain in App Manager, the Maemo update touched about ~40 packages....
