First thing when I got home after work was update over WiFi. The N900 still had lots of battery left since I took it off the charger this morning, so I just started the update.

I had only 40 MB free on the rootfs but still gave it a try, and it worked flawlessly. Just be careful to avoid extras-devel like the plague and no problems should occur. :)

Run 'apt-get clean'. Wipes all the downloaded .deb packages.

Re: Maemo 5 PR1.1 released today (January 14)

I see the Maemo 5 update in the Application manager and everytime I try to install it, it says I have to run it through NSU...

I tried everything thing like cleaning up the rootfs ( It has 60.3M available ) as in earlier posts but it still not working....

I also tried to update it through NSU but it seems that it deletes all your applications...

Can anyone please help me?

How can I update to PR1.1 without NSU(which removes some data) ? It gave me some message like "To update your device to this version of operating system you should use NSU" But I think I dont have to use NSU, do I? It seems like its related about my rootfs usage. How much free space does it need? I have 25~ megabytes.

Do you lot know how frustrating is it sitting in a business meeting where yo have a dodgy 2g signal, knowing an update like this iswaiting for you? :D

All done and dusted. No tantrum needed. Now I'm off to explore.

you need over 45mb free for OTA so go to here to look at how to free up space, you might also have conflicting package so might need some more help after freeing up space

It also happens to me. I solved this way:
- charge the batttery ( http://thpmaemo.blogspot.com/2009/12...y-in-n810.html, or with a nokia 5800).
1. remove battery
2. connect USB cable
3. start flasher-3.5 from command line http://wiki.maemo.org/Flasher#Flashe...sage_examples.
4. insert battery
5. flashing starts

Ok, so i flashed and restored everything, including my application list, which led me to install all my previous apps (not many, about 8-10) but I somehow missed your post about this 'bug' about not cleaning up previous app space (even though I read through this ENTIRE thread).
so is it worth uninstalling everything and cleaning up? and if so how do I do it?

is it safe to do this update? please can someone adviise me on this, as the previour minor update that came out a few days ago almost bricked my phone as it stopped at 1sec remaining with NSU, I had to then re-flash it using the flasher tool and the previous firmware. And now ive noticed my handset rebooted itself whilst i was using it the other day which never happened before.
So is it safe to do this update? anyone know why that happened with the previous update?

please help :(

Nobody ever promised that it was fixed in PR1.1. You shouldn't rely on forum gossip too much. :)

Not all numbers with * and # are USSD codes. IIRC there are four categories of such number codes. Only a few of those categories have been fixed with PR1.1. But USSD was promised for a future release.

Maybe Google will put a virtual keyboard in javascript on their site especially for you :D

Seriously, the browser portrait mode is work in progress - it's not finished yet. It's still very useful for reading long articles, online books, forums with lots of posts (like this one), facebook etc. - anything long with lots of vertical scrolling.

You need to turn to landscape mode for entering text, is all.

I would have liked to use the cursor keys to scroll the browser in portrait mode. Oh well. It's back to the "hundred swipes of the stylus" to scroll to the end of a long page.

If it doesn't change when you turn, hit the screen once. It will

After reflashing and before installing anything else it might be useful to do cleanup in /opt at least. Otherwise you will have some dead weight there which will be hard to find later.

This info is somewhat troubling.

Now that this firmware has been released, I'd like to completely wipe the device when I install it so that it's as though it shipped OOTB with this firmware installed.

There's absolutely nothing on there that I care about keeping, so I have no interest whatsoever in data being left behind in /opt and /home/user...

What exactly are my options? Should I flash with the eMMC image, or does that come with other possible issues I should be aware of?

Or should I do a normal flash and then rm -rf /home/opt /home/user

Help greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the best solution is to wait. :(

There is no other option in the middle of an update. You could try to shut it off and restart it in hopes that it was just some tiny little unimportant thing it got stuck on, but odds are it will not come up correctly and you will have to reflash.

Space can't be the issue in your case. I successfully updated with only 40 MB free.
Maybe you got some conflicting packages so that the update cannot work. Either find and remove those (stuff from extras-devel perhaps) or flash via NSU or the command line flasher-3.5 tool.

Did you update it from the exclamation mark from the status area or in Application Manager ( Maemo 5 ) ?
