White screen of death
My Nokia 770 was working the night before. The next day the boot process won't get pass the white screen. I almost send it to Nokia to fix it. But I thought I would flash it. Once I flashed it, everything is good again.

Re: White screen of death
Not a WSOD in that case! :)

Re: White screen of death
Lucky you. Mine froze completely, couldn't turn it off anymore with the buttons, so I took out the battery, and it broke the screen. Even after flashing, all I have is a white screen with some colored lines on it. *sigh* Now I get to find out what Nokia support is like around these parts...
In the past I have read all the threads partaining to the 770's screen on this forum, and now I have to chime in with all those who said the screen breaks too easily: it really does. |

Re: White screen of death
At least I know what did it, it was removing the battery to shut it down and immediately putting the battery back in (something I've had to do only twice before). But really, it was either that or letting the battery run down, because the OS had frozen completely.

Re: White screen of death
Drewvt - did this happen to a 770 or N800?
|
Re: White screen of death
Mine's the 770.

Re: White screen of death
Bear with me for the stupid question but what is a WSOD ?
|
Re: White screen of death
Hu ok ! I think I got it while reading other posts. WSOD = White Screen Of Death, isn't it ? :-)
BTW, it's not funny at all. I also experienced that after trying to charge the battery and had to reflash (disable lifeguard didn't helped)... :-( |
Re: White screen of death
If you fixed it with a reflash it was not a WSOD, just a reboot loop.
The "death" with a WSOD is final, the device needs to be sent back to Nokia for repair/replacement if you ever want to see anything on your screen again. HTH, Andrew |
Re: White screen of death
Ouch! Hopefully it was just a WSORL and not a WSOD then :)
|
Re: White screen of death
Let's call it a WIRL (white infinite reboot loop :-)
|
Re: White screen of death
Anyone think it safe to say the N800 doesn't actually suffer from the WSOD? So far I don't think anyone has yet experienced a true WSDO with the N800, "only" far too many non-fatal WIRLs :)

Re: White screen of death
Well, not to be a pessimist, but the 770's screen was also trouble-free for the first couple of months or so...
|
Re: White screen of death
Yeah, probably too early to call so far but despite all the scares on this forum I think we're yet to see a true N800 WSOD. Fingers crossed for the next few months, here's hoping this problem has been well and truly put to bed.

Re: White screen of death
Two months after I sent my WSOD'ed 770 to Nokia support, I'm still waiting. (Where is the smiley that's bashing its head against the wall? :) )
Based on what I read here, that's what I expected, but I'm getting the feeling they sent it to Estonia for a screen replacement and then forgot about it!... |

I got this a Fry's with an extended warrantee. They had promissed that they would replace it immediately with a new one if anything went wrong. Let's see if they honor it. -- rhackenb |
Re: White screen of death
Mine seems to have a related problem: the screen gets distorted with vertical stripes. This is a 770, purchased in December 2006, at a CompUSA which has since closed. The interesting thing is that it started when I plugged it in to recharge, not on boot (unless the charging sequence actually involves booting the kernel; I suppose it's possible).
Fortunately, most of my actual data is on the MMC, and it's still functioning enough that I should be able to VNC into it; but it sounds like I won't have much luck at actually fixing anything, short of sending it off to Nokia and waiting a few months. |

I'll try to let it keep trying to recharge and see if it takes. -- rhackenb |

As Mara suggested, it sounds like your device ran itself completely flat so if you had a car charger connected it's either got a faulty connector or it isn't supplying enough juice. |
