N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call

first,i make a computer to phone video call.phone show my head .:D last ,make phone to computer, computer show my head~ Although not is 3G video call. Oh, only so so. -if u want make gtalk video call, u must add your gmail account to N900, in VoIP and IM accounts.BTW, you may add other person account to contacts. Waiting for real 3G video call future! |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I didn't catch that GTalk video call support had been added.
What do you mean by "real 3G video call" |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Probably 3G device to 3G device. (Though technically if you were using a Windows netbook on a 3G network then it would qualify wouldn't it?).

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
It's funny that you Americans don't even know 3G video calls... I read somewhere that all US operators simply blocked it from their networks, maybe thats why. :D
3G video calls are part of the phone standard - you can simply call a person an decide if the call should be voice only or video. You do not use an IM network for that, it's a phone call. You're dialing the phone number. So the "Windows netbook on a 3G netwoork" doesn't qualify as 3G voice call - unless the Windows netbook has a driver and an application that react to phone calls and support this type of video call when I dial your number on my handset. |

Then I tried between my N900 and my desktop computer running Empathy. I got a different user interface (it did have a part that would display the remote cam image - and a smaller place where I could see the image coming from my own front cam), but the video was non-functional. Black. :( Am I about to configure router settings again to help NAT traversal?*sigh* |

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
i did the test :
using my laptop under ubuntu 9.10 using empathy and my n900, i did a video call, and when call was notified on my n900, i take it and when phone screen appears, i seen a "camera" button, i clicked on and a second after i saw two pictures : one from my laptop webcam, and another from the N900 front camera, so it works but its really ugly and slow ... |

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Any reports so far of it working from N900 to N900?
Because that's what I tried and it failed (2 GTalk accounts). I didn't even see the cam button on the interface. So I'd be interested to know if it's something I could play with because in principle it's known to work - or if it only works PC to N900. |

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I tried using Video chat initiated from a MacBook (Mac OS X 10.5.8) using GTalk with the Video plugin to my N900 (Updated to 2.2009.51-1 (PR1.1)) on WLAN. What happens is:
Ringing on N900 Accepting Video from Mac to N900 OK Audio bidirektional OK Enabling video camera on N900: Bidirectional Video OK for about 2s, then the chat is disconnected and google reports error, disconnected [Code: 3 Remote: false] Any ideas? |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I was able to video call my N900 from my PC and it sent video for about 5 minutes before I disconnected the call, but I don't see how I can initiate a video call from my N900 - can anyone help me out with this?

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Works fine between N8x0 and N900 too. N900 video shows up as a bit dark though. Anyone know how to lighten the image?
|
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
i read somewhere that the availability of video depends on gtalk protocols being used. apparently there are several. Making a call from win7 activex plugin triggers the n900 to show the webcam button.

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I tried it using empathy IM client from ubuntu 9.10, I read some people succeeded with that. For the first call I saw a different interface on the N900 for the incoming call but then it reverted to plain old call screen. Didn't show up later. Does it need the router to be configured somehow?

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I have tried video call on msn messenger between my laptop and N900. it all went well. all i have to do is to initiate it from laptop. dont know how it can be initiated from N900. same thing with gtalk. i was able to do a video call on gtalk between my laptop and N900. I am using telepethy plugin.
|
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Ok, so I have installed telepathy-theonering and now the interface where I can choose to enable the webcam stays on the N900 after I accept a video call from the laptop. No video shows up and empathy has crashed on my laptop.
It's definetely not stable yet. |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Initiated a call from windows vista in firefox with plugin to my n900. I had a new videocall interface. It worked perfect.

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Weird, works from windows 7 using chrome. Ubuntu might not support my webcam fully for empathy or something O.o

Great piece of news. Wondering whether this is an effect of the firmware update as it didn't work earlier.

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Looking for something else when I saw this thread so haven't read the entire thing so thought I would add a few things (that may or may not be covered already) since I use it a lot:
- 3G or wifi doesn't matter even in the US (um, yeah, that's where I usually be, I think) - gtalk is data, not the same as what someone was referring to. - If you use gtalk and are like me, you are probably signed into your account from multiple devices. Text routes nicely as you know - first client to respond to a new convo is now the primary client until you move to another device (or browser on a device). - However, voice and voice+video don't 'route' so nicely. I noticed this a long time ago, but haven't spent any time looking into it, but suspect it has to do w/what they are doing at L4. For it to work (at least for me), the TARGET account you are calling can only be logged into one 'place'. So if you have gmail web interface up in firefox and logged into chat w/browser and running whatever client you want AND logged in with your N900 24/7, it won't work. Pre-N900 I started keeping my browsers logged out because of this. I usually have at least 2 running on my main laptop and forget to close on other laptops/desktops so it can be a royal pain to figure out which puter I left a browser running so just easier to not login except with a client. - Someone mentioned NAT/FW issues - shouldn't be any problems with NAT or PAT (which I assume is really what was being referred to) unless there is a problem with the state table, or playing with stateless stuffs or doing something funky. There are a number of ports it needs. IIRC, they are all UDP (of course). I've actually used gtalk voice a lot with the N900 (and yes, over 3G too), but haven't used video much. Video is not great w/a very slow refresh rate even if you have a >2Mbps 3[.5]G connection or wifi. I think someone said how great the video is - no idea what he is using, even a nice MBP doing a gtalk video call over a 10Mbps home connection has marginal video with gtalk. I guess I just wouldn't call it great or be that excited about it. BUT, it isn't bad if you are traveling and want to make face contact with someone or you get your mistress and girlfriend their own N900s and you want to sneak a quick peak whilst your wife is on the phone with her boyfriend. Anyway, that's the only way I've personally gotten it to work (on anything) and it works fairly well. I use it a few times a week (voice, no video) and 99.9% of the time, I am out and about on cell data when I do use it. Oh, and I don't have 2 N900s to test with, but I can't see why it wouldn't work (unless that's been determined already in this thread somewhere). If N900 to N900 wouldn't work, then N900 to something else wouldn't either. |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I wonder, could someone post a video on youtube of a video call with the N900 (preferably showing both the image on N900 and on the computer end)?
|
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
so all you have to do then is add a button for N900 web cam.

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
Wow this is totally neat. The picture on the front facing camera looks a million times better through this than it did when I loaded up the "Mirror" program from extras-devel.
Just video chatted with my girlfriend... a description of the experience. I could not initiate video chat with her. If I placed a google chat voice call to her, there was no interface to turn on the camera and it was just a basic audio call. When I told her to initiate a video chat with me, she was confused because the google chat client on the N900 had not identified my resource as video chat enabled so I didn't have the little video icon next to my name. I told her to do it anyway... I got a call with an interface different from the voice chat. There were buttons to turn on the front camera, mute the mic, and enable audio which turned on the speaker phone. Until I hit the button to turn on the webcam, she just saw my gtalk avatar. The sound was great and the picture of me on her end was great. Unfortunately the image I was getting from her was very garbled... I should have taken a screen shot. The image of herself on her end looked fine. Another note is that the interface only worked in landscape mode, if i rotated my phone to portrait my camera image just went sideways. I used the kickstand to set the phone down on my desk and it worked really well. Anyway, promising look of things to come.. exciting! Thanks for finding this and pointing it out! J |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
WOW!
Gchat Video call on Mac os X (Safari) works to n900 over wifi. BUT: The video call must be initiated from the Mac. If initiated from n900, the video option does not appear. When n900 is on 2.5G cell network, video seems to make the call unstable (probably not enough bandwidth). |
Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
i just tried making a video chat from my laptop running vista to my n900 and nothing happens. do you guys have any advice on how to get this to work?

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
same here we tested n900 to n900 no go, and if we initiated from the pc the image from the pc webcam looks in the n900 like crap and the n900 image is fine and fast

Re: N900 Make Gtalk Video Call succeeded !Not 3G Video Call
I realise this is resurfacing a slightly old thread, but I just wanted to confirm this works and was really easy to setup!
My wife just got a new dell netbook with webcam. We both have gmail accounts and can see each other online when on the iGoogle home page. She installed the google talk plugin, clicked on me in her chat list, chose "video and more" option and inititated a call to my N900. On the N900, I got an incoming call from her, answered it and up popped the screen with an option to turn on the camera. I did so, and she could see me - but I could not see her - just her avatar was displayed on my N900. I could see myself though. She ended the call and had another go and we had perfect 2 way video. No stutter or anything. This was in different rooms in the same house via the same wireless router, and I thought the video quality was quite acceptable as long as my face was in direct light (a table lamp for this test). I will test this tomorrow from the office (WiFi), then try it over 3G to see what happens. I think the last update (PR1.1.1) may have slightly improved the front cam images, but I may just be imagining it! I actually thought the video from my N900 was clearer than the video from her Dell :D I think the reason we cannot initiate a video chat the other way is that we do not have the video plugin on our N900's. Hopefully Google are working on a linux version. |
