The Nokia N800 Review

So yeah- I decided to evaluate it as a device all it's own without comparing it to the 770.

Warning: Huge article.

Edited to include some comments on webcam chat. Thanks to John Tokash for helping me test this!

Some readers have shot back that this review is too much fanboy fluff. Was I unfair?

Also - AJAX heavy sites and Google Reader with a big stack of RSS feeds work, but can be VERY slow. Can we get some examples here?

No, not unfair at all.

There's only so much you can put in a review, and you can never be 100% objective, however much you want to because past experience will guide you on your paradigm to judging other handets.

Very Nice, imo.

Hey, what software (if any) did you use for screen capture? I've seen threads but they have several steps just to screen capture instead of install and use.

No complaints. I actually consider you to be perhaps the best qualified to do such a review and keep it fair.

ThoughtFix, it was me and I've posted another reply.
IMHO, we need to be critical of Nokia (all the time) along with praising them; they're stating that browser issues in 770 should (more or less) be ignored, because it's an old device!!! (any doubts, read Ari's post again).
This attitude is unacceptable; an Internet Tablet (as Nokia claims) must provide proper Internet experience; this has nothing to do with OS upgrade, but browser stability and feature support.
The danger of such an attitude is that when the next Nxxx comes out Nokia might simply ignore N800 issues.
Why is this okay with some of us? Just because we can afford buying the next one (the stupidest excuse)?

Fair point. I wanted to be critical too, but like I said, I have no 770 experience to base that on.

You're right though, we need to be critical all the time. Nokia actually enjoys being told what crap they're putting out so they can eventually iron it out.

I'll probably find some bugs in it sooner or later.

(Well I've found 1. I get the white screen of death when viewing daily motion.com)

hey thoughtfix: I found this to be a thoughtful review, and well-pitched for those newly curious about the N800 and not familiar with the 770. For those who think that you're being too much of a fan-boy, perhaps a summary at the end of your review with a list of pros and cons will help reader see more of the balance.

Re: The Nokia N800 Review

Very good review overall IMO. However, I am still curious about one aspect concerning the N800. Many people have complained in these forums about the build quality of the N800 (especially the buttons and MMC slot door). Validating (or otherwise) these complaints would make a welcome addition to that review, perhaps in a "pros and cons" section, as already mentioned.

Re: The Nokia N800 Review

Okay let's be a little critical:
  • There was no good reason to make the buttons smaller. The new buttons LOOK nicer, but are less functional.
  • The memory door on the bottom is a little flimsy. I'd be afraid of breaking it.
  • Webcam quality and centering is off: Something that should've come through in testing.
  • The shape, port locations, and structure make it impossible to create snap-on third party docking/expansion.
  • What device with an integrated camera (regardless of camera quality) DOESN'T come with a snapshot or video recording app?
  • Most browser slow-down and rendering problems I've had were due to ads. An ad blocker extension (like those available with Firefox) would improve stability and performance.
  • sudo gainroot was not implemented by default.
  • There is no PC client for managing RSS feeds, bookmarks, Email, configuration, etc. as most pocketable devices have.

Some of these suggestions are straight from an old article of mine. We can see that Nokia did integrate many of these suggestions already.

I thought it was a fair assessment of the device. You clearly mentioned several shortcomings. I for one look to your posts; among a few others; as a trusted source of information.

Hey, your review got linked by engadget!

(Along with CNET's and NYT!)

Re: The Nokia N800 Review

I notice in your review you state that the bluetooth tethering will only work if you have an EVDO data plan. Is this absolutely true? I am currently able to use my LG vx8300 phone in its 1x mode (EVDO turned off) as a bluetooth DUN with my laptop. But I am having trouble doing the same with the N800. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my settings (packet vs. data?). I keep getting an authentication failed on the N800 (yes, I've changed the auth info to the appropriate verizon stuff). The phone keeps disconnecting after 6 seconds. Any hints at what is going on?

Re: The Nokia N800 Review

No ... you need a data plan but it can be EVDO, EVDO rev A, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA - whatever will get you real internet access and whatever your provider gives.
