Please help me out :-)

Hey all,

I am in the process of sending my 770 for repairs (yes, WSOD) and I realised I have these three options available... What would you do? :-)

May I remind you that I live in the middle of nowhere and returning the 770 for repairs is quite costly and time-consuming.

Nokia gave me 240$ for mine, I took it and ran. I am now able to boot from flash or either slot. I have three images setup and all the main applications I use work. A couple of the things I use are not working, mweather kills your N800, Serial Keyboard support not available yet, but the experience is much better than 770. I owned 770 for 11 months, and I loved it. My 770 was in for repair for 5 weeks and they had no return time in site. At the same time the N800 was born, so I took the 240$ they offered me. It cost me 160$ +tax to upgrade. Well worth it, although I already toasted one, and had it replaced. Compusa offers a protection plan for 60$, I think I am going to go back and add it, its well worth it.

Just out of curiosity... how did you toast it? (Is it on some other thread?)

Well I had installed the bluetooth plugin. I did not figure it would work, and it did not. I rebooted and got a reboot loop. I then reflashed and it would no longer power on, it tried to, but it would not. I tried reflashing, but it did not work.

I think the problem was that it was in the reboot loop when I reflashed it the first time. I am assuming if I had pulled the battery and then reflashed it might have worked. No positive though?

Oh yeah, read about it... sorry for the redundancy.

*Mentally prepares for a day of arguing with Nokia Support* (international calls, if I might add...)

I HATE NOKIA SUPPORT!!!! Even Worse the "ERT" Executive Resolution Team. I did not have a WSOD, so this may be different, but they would not even talk to me until 30 days after they recieved it. Then said take 240$ or wait.

Thats the short version, no amount of begging pleading whining or screaming seemed to make any difference.

The absolute worst case of customer service I have ever recieved, if I had other options, I may not have purchased an N800, but all the UMPC's are like 1000$.

That was not good for my mental preparation :D ... however, I somehow got the impression that Nokia UK are not that bad...

I'd already send my nokia for repair on 10/01/2007 to entronix.com and they return my nokia repaired five days after

I just sent mine in yesterday - it wasn't connecting the computer to the memory card via USB - and if they offer me cash I am going to get the n800. If they fix it I'll be happy too - the 770 is great little computer. Surprisingly though I am not feeling any withdrawal symptoms...

It's been dead for about two weeks now and withdrawal has set in... just wait a few more days :-)

If I am given the option to select one of the above I would select " Take the cash and run ". From what I know and understand, Nokia is still using all of us a Beta tester for their Nokia 770 and N800 Hardware. I have a Nokia 770, and only After the numerous initial issues did it settled down.

The N800 on the other hand seems to have started off with a bang, a great endless reboot Loop, a missing Hard Slip Cover, not having the option to turn off ( cos it turns itself on randomly ). The funny thing is that the endless reboot happens just by adding an RSS feed.

This itself should prove the quality of the Hardware. I think , now I totally understand why I try not to buy anything Korean. Hyundai car anyone

So we undergo all this pain just to have two good speakers ? A slightly better looking display or a better UI ?

IBM did not learn from its mistakes ( ignoring the Intel 80286 ), Compaq did not learn from its mistakes ( think of DEC, remember Compaq killing its DEC Alpha Chip ), INTEL did not learn from its mistakes ( gobbling up companies left and right but not making use of the available intelligentsia and their abilities, and thus has AMD nipping at its behind).

So what makes us think that Nokia will learn to do better, from its IT ?

Right, wrong, good, bad, intentional or indifferent: the 770 was for all intents and purposes used as a market feeler. That alone suggests a feedback process for further development. The improvements in the N800 (I am omitting devolution for sake of argument) lead me to believe there is a serious effort behind the devices. I'm enjoying the ride. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Please help me out :-)

Well, by the time Nokia support sorts out whether to send me cash or repaired unit, enough time will have passed to see if N800 really is better than 770 :D
