How to get rootsh without repositories

Is it possible to get hold of rootsh and install if the repositories are down?

are they down again? search the forums. someone posted some mirror URL's the other day. I think one of them was:

is it not called gainroot? or did it change names?

No, it's called rootsh. ISTR reading that all the repositories can fail to update properly if even one fails. Try disabling any that are failing to update.

you could download the .deb file from here, but you won't be able to install it without root access. chicken and egg problem :)

it's in extras (now called "maemo.org").
i don't know which category (probably system), but you should be able to find it if you tap on the menu bar and use the search function.

It's in extras-devel, perhaps elsewhere.

I just uninstalled it on my N900 and reinstalled it, just to test it out.

DOH!!!!
You're not going to believe this.....or perhaps you are...

Couldn't find it anywhere and couldn't see it anywhere. Did have problems with errors from some repositories so suspected it was that but got rid of the errors but disabling and re-enabling one by one and then had a quick look in Uninstall. And you guessed it. It was already installed. But I don't even remember installing it.

Oh well. Thanks for the useful help here.

Is it just a case of typing sudo gainroot into xterm to use it now? I'm not a linux person so sorry for this question.
