Personally, Alien Dalvik is of no interest to me. But, are You aiming this question @ council, or what?

kolos 2011-09-10 17:53

Re: Ask the Council!

Yes, it's proposal to the council. I think that a lot of N900 users would like to have ability to run Android apps within Maemo. Just look how big is Nitdroid thread.

Re: Ask the Council!

But, what do they have, that we can't port from desktop linux, for much lower cost, instead paying ridiculous amount of money to Myriad (for no real benefit)?

for me, it's like request, to pay someone for porting/emulating symbian...

Re: Ask the Council!

OK Estel, you will make a lot of people happy if you could port this app. Personally I don't need it, because I use Gtalk and Skype, but I would be interested in some others (dictionaries with pronunciation etc.).

As long as conflict Oracle vs Google is not resolved anything related to android including Alien Dalvik is a hot potato.

It's closed source, so no dice unless WhatsApp Inc do it. I think we should shun this type of application and promote the use of open protocols. That's the way forward, to prevent such companies from exploiting network externalities. What happens when the whole world is using WhatsApp? They start to bleed you dry, that's what.

if you would like to run Android apps, buy yourself an Android device, maybe?
or install NITDroid, indeed...

we probably have more chances to see Alien Dalvik run on a N900 if NOKIA decides to include it in Harmattan & it's possible to install a H.E. on the N900

OK, here I have one dumb comparison. ;)

I have PC with installed Ubuntu and my cousin likes to play this free game very much, but unfortunately the game is developed just for Windows. I don't have Windows license, nor I like idea about dual booting too much (with NITdroid we can't make phone calls, we can't use GPS, switching between OSes drains battery etc.). So, what is your proposal?

A. Should I buy another PC with Windows license?
B. Should I install Wine and play this game within Ubuntu?

We can just hope.

We're not talking about something which is not already done. ;)

Re: Ask the Council!

There is huge difference between "free" and "open source". For "open source" program, game or whatever, we can port it using much less resources/money, than for paying Myriad or any other "bastard". About "free" (closed source), we're not interested in. If someone is, go ahead and convince/pay Myriad to do it, but don't involve Open Source Community into it ;) At least, until they release everything as Open Source ;)

most games that can be played in Wine are available (usually with better features ) as open sources versions in Linux/GNU.

the games that require DirectX do not run well (if @ all) under Wine.

thus your comparison is not really applicable.
if you want to play those games under Linux/GNU, you have to buy an emulator like CrossOver.

I get your point, but Rms would not agree about term you've used for closed source(free). "Open source" is term reshaped by industry.

My point is that Myriad Alien Dalvik enables to run Android apps (probably not all) in Maemo as same as Wine enables to run some Windows apps in Linux.
Also I think that many N900 users are prepared to pay for this add-on (app) one way or the other (as individuals or as community). If we try to contact Myriad as individuals (unorganized), they probably won't even reply to our emails. But if we contact them as community, maybe they will hear our voice.

WINE is Open Source. Alien Dalvik is not. Case closed ;)

If You think Myriad can be convinced to release Alien Dalvik for Maemo for free, go ahead - You got blessing of Community. Still, You'll be successful, if they even answer to You with "no, thanks".

Opened or closed, it doesn't matter, because conversation was about their similar capabilities, not about their source. And if Alien Dalvik would be opened, we wouldn't have this conversation at all, because we would already use it. ;)

EDIT:
Alien Dalvik could significantly prolong life of our device, OS and this community, so I think that this question should concern us all.
We are losing members mostly due to lack of applications and updates.

Estel 2011-09-11 20:06

Re: Ask the Council!

I think that if we're really loosing members, it's due to somehow lack of devices, and Android on it's own if of less and less interest for N900 users. Anyway, we can agree to disagree here.

well, there is a completely open solution to your wish... NITDroid.
take it or leave it
funny thing is that the only platform on which Alien Dalvik has been spotted so far... is Maemo :D
alas, only in the ads of Myriad :(

i doubt many do have more knowledge of dalvik stuff on the N900 then e-yes, but he never seemed to have bothered about it.
maybe you should contact & ask him about it?

The pure amount of spam getting on here and being allowed so because there is no moderator for sometimes days now and if you really do not know that then what can i say?.

Quit assuming. There was a LOT of activity, and I have handled it as I've been notified. Sadly, too few members are using Report This it seems, preferring to post in the forum and also fill up my inbox here.

No problem. Just cut us some slack. We're not paid to do this, and contrary to some assumptions, we have lives. I was at a mobile meetup most of the evening. I'm not interrupting that to moderate here (although I did once).

I do try to report spam when I see it, but the enforced delay between reports is a huge turn off so I rarely have the patience for more than one or two per session.

Re: Ask the Council!

Edit : Problem solved ! Thanks everybody.

I have suggested to also post here the issue of :

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=76734

"I have submitted Python-SymPy v0.7.1, see :
http://maemo.org/packages/view/python-sympy/
But I need to be the maintainer to promote the new version from extras-devel to extras-testing. I have tried contacting the current maintainer (Tom Tanner) with no success. I also have requested to be Python-SymPy maintainer, but the request is still pending for more than one week.

Could some Maemo administrator approve me as Python-SymPy maintainer ?

Python-SymPy is currently used by "Integral" and soon to be released "Derivative", "Limit" and "Power Series". I am the author of these softwares."

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ask the Council!

i got a trivial question about the meeting last night... who are
bergie, mairas, maclaver, X-Fade and nemein? seems like they are
important figures.
just a suggestion for future meeting, maybe it would be better if the main people involved in the topics to be discussed are introduced at the start of the meeting so that new members who decide to watch have an idea on who's talking and why.
i hope i'm not offending anybody here, i just want to know. thanks!

EDIT:
X-fade - maemo.org webmaster
Nemein - the company that built the maemo.org developers website and maintain and develop it further on
bergie - works for Nemein
mairas - the new Maemo community liaison from Nokia
maclaver - the Maemo Developer Advocate at Nokia

i just realized i can be good at stalking. beware! :)

i still think it would be better if they were introduced, maybe in the agenda portion
Example:
Topic 1 What's for dinner? (Speaker: Mom - Head of the Kitchen)

Hi Pali,

Thanks for following up. I thought from X-Fade's comments on October 3 that it was fixed and so I haven't looked at it since then. It was good that you posted another comment on 11-19. X-Fade is in high demand these days and I'll nudge him about it if it's not fixed by the next time we talk.
