Interestingly, the second hit for me was a fascinating story about "Skating in the Vikings' footsteps":

Quote:

Skating north, the wind at our backs accelerated, and so did we. And now there were two skaters coming toward us, fighting the wind. Far out on the windswept ice, we met. "Talar du engelska?" I asked. "Do you speak English?" "Yes, I do," answered Kristian Wannebo, who with his companion Ylva Öhrskog had skated upwind from Sigtuna, our destination. As Kristian pulled out his map to show us our whereabouts, a gust of wind tore it out of his hands, and all four of us raced after it in hot pursuit. Finally Kristian dove forward on his stomach, pinning the map under him.

We could have talked for hours, but the wind chill was getting to us, so we parted company. Minutes later Arjen and I glided into the Sigtuna town pier. The adventure was over; I had to catch a bus back to Stockholm. The next morning I flew home to Vermont, sad to leave Sweden, but fortified with a great treasure of new friends and new memories.

This is your main maemo.org account, you can choose (indeed you have to when making changes) which pieces of information to make public through a series of checkboxes.
  1. Go to http://maemo.org/profile/view/kristianw/
  2. Log in at the top right
  3. Choose Page > Publish account details

http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1270047374

However, I'd ask you to consider carefully the information you lock down - participation in a community functions best when people aren't anonymous. Having a non-anonymous community is a sign of respect and maturity - although there are obviously privacy concerns for you to balance.

EXACTLY, thanks Jaffa !

My point was, that some forum specific info on members should be able to stay within the forum.
Like, in this case, karma.

Unless, of course, the forum thinks otherwise.

GIMP FTW (inspired by Maemo 5 ;-))

Ah, but did you do the Gimp work on the N900? If you did, you get three stars on that level and a new high score.

Ah, I see what you did there. You asked a question of the new council. Clever :-)

No, not on the N900, I'm afraid.

Inside this forum we can be anonymous, and outside...
Personally I don't mind much,
but personal information should really not LEAK OUT of a forum.

Also, we promote openness in software,
and implicitly indicate superiority over the Microsoft world,
and should attempt superiority in security.

Please forgive my heavy-handed approach to the subject,
but it is really a matter of principles of integrity.
The goal is not that inside the forum you be anonymous. You created a maemo.org account, and you put your full name in the account. What gave you an expectation that your name & username would not be associated anywhere? And how does disclosing your name infringe on your privacy? Does a name now count as "personal information"?

I speak only for myself, but when I register and post on a public forum, I have no expectation that my name & username will not be publicly displayed. I *do* have an expectation that email address, phone number and physical address will not be displayed or shared with 3rd parties unless I authorise it.

Cheers,
Dave.

Re: Ask the Council!

Just curious: (and I know it wasn't the council)

Who updated the autobuilder to sdk1.2 for Fremantle, and why?

I know I've run into several apps that won't update due to dependencies that will only be available once PR1.2 is out. I've seen threads on several more. I'd guess about a dozen in all. If I understand things right, this will only get worse as time goes on, ie more apps that won't update because of dependencies.

(Even worse, I recently re-flashed my firmware, now at least one app I want won't install at all)

Will this cause problems with the QA testing? It seems there is a bit of a backup already, which seems like it will get worse if a bunch of apps move from devel to testing all around the same time when PR1.2 gets released?

Obviously (to me), this will only get worse the longer we go until PR1.2 is available.

Niels. The change was proposed and announced here: http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/mae...ch/025437.html

Quote:

and why?
The goal was to allow developers to get their apps built for PR 1.2 and into Extras before the firmware images came out.

http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/mae...ch/025668.html

This kind of backfired because so many people are using extras-devel on their N900s, and because developers couldn't test their own apps to get them promoted from extras-devel to -testing to extras-1.2, since they didn't have PR 1.2 firmwares.

Probably, yes. Niels (ref. above) is looking at some hacks which will help with libhildon issues.

Re: Ask the Council!

Thanks for the links. Now I understand the why better.

Next question for the current and new council: How long?

Yes, I know until PR1.2 and nobody can say when that is :( There are already multiple threads concerning problems. It'll start looking pretty silly in a week or two if there isn't a work around or release of PR1.2.

My N900 (my fault. because I re-flashed it) is already less useful to me, as apps that I came to depend on (again my fault for using devel stuff) I can not re-install :(

Leetut, not really a council question but a moderator question. Any time you see something like that, feel free to use Report This and explain the offense.

Unfortunately the council doesn't do technical support :), so this is a wrong topic for this. But yes, there's two ways: use the builtin backup application or don't reflash and upgrade using application manager.

I actually have a very small supply... best to hit up Dawn Foster or Quim Gil. I had promised qole some before I went.

EDIT: although... when I finally get permission to use the logo and other identity elements, I'll of course design some custom...

This doesn't mean that what you are doing now will be lost. The expertise and knowledge that we display and share will definitely be re-usable, and will definitely be a big part of MeeGo. Don't think of this merger as "throw everything in the bin and start from scratch". Rather, "redecorate, fix the problems we have and move on".

It's up to contributors to define their own goals. maemo.org can't force anyone to do something specific, however the Council can guide the overall direction, and ensure that the handover will be as seamless as possible.

Bottom line: we can either work hand in hand, and make sure the content we produce is re-usable, or we can be narrow-minded geeks, and only think about our own little selves. Guess which one prevails in Open Source communities.

Oh wait. I'm not council anymore! I don't have to answer ANY of these questions! Mwahahaha! :D
