After the upgrade to PR1.1 I had a funny issue with fbreader disappearing from AM (later reappearing), see

(In this thread I referred to AM as Program Manager, because in the German version it's called like this.)
Is this related, or just a temporary fluke with repositories.

It involves root and a command line.. insert standard bright yellow caution signs and what not..

Code:

rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/*
Then do either an apt-get update in the terminal.. or refresh repositories in the App Manager. You should get full new lists.

I just tried disabling all of the catalogs -- haven't tried that before. Then I enabled Nokia Applications and it worked fine. FYI. I wasn't having any problems, just thinking about your problem...

OP: could you copy&paste the log from application manager after failed operation.

The thing is, when on WiFi, there is no failed operation because it just sits there and doesn't time out or fail, it just stays on "Checking for Updates..." without any progress unless you press Stop.

I'll post the log that results after I use 3G, as there are actual errors, from my N900.

And thanks for all the help, but I haven't really got anywhere...

EDIT: Here's the log:

So there isn't anything in the log after pressing Stop?

Run apt-get update as root. Maybe the App Manager is touchy.. once those files are rebuilt the AM is fine.

Ok, so maybe my provider has a bad proxy, but why is it that I can surf the web fine and install apps from the maemo.org repo; and why is it that I can't access any apps through WiFi at all...?

I didn't do it but I follow an advice from some post above - disable all repos, exit, then enable it and do "refresh". It definitely reads from network around 1min and... the same state - I have repositories, but no updates, and no such stuff like 3g2g-switcher*

I tried the above with the same result: no updates and no apps, can't even access any apps over WiFi still.

I'm actually really pissed off. This expensive phone can't even install any applications. And if it's my internet's fault, what can I do to fix it?

So yours won't update over 3G *or* wifi?

Can I get a copy/paste of:

Code:

apt-get update
from a terminal on both?

It will update the "Maemo.org" repository over 3G only. It won't update the other three repos as it gives a Proxy CONNECT abort error or something, and over WiFi it doesn't even get past the "Updating..." bit and just displays "No apps available".

with the apt-get, it just says "could not open lock file...." etc

egoshin 2010-01-20 22:12

Re: Application manager broken

OK, I did "apt-get update".

It seems that it completed it's task, at least for extras-devel - it says:

Done.
W: GPG error: http://repository.maemo.org fremantle Release: The following signature were invalid: BADSIG E40...BD maemo.org Extras repositories (Fremantle Extras) <repositories@maemo.org>
W: You may want to run aot-get update to correct these problems

And files /var/lib/apt/lists/repository* do exist again and there is 'packageview' in one of them (extras-devel) with NEW version.

But Application manager still insists - "(no updates)", and doesn't show 3g2g-switcher*.

So, anything is OK, repository files are OK, but Application Manager doesn't want to accept because "Ignoring version from wrong domain". It is seemed as a deliberate behavior now.

could not open lock file is because you are not root.. explained a few pages back I think.

You say on 3G it updates the Maemo.org repository. I *think* that is where rootsh is.. can you do a search for me and see if it's installable?

Re: Application manager broken

Also, try over a period and do it several times. I've found that repositories have an odd way of simply not working several minutes.

I always get the same issue: Could not resolve repositories,maemo.org. If after a failed update one clicks the Details and selects a repository, after a second the error is added in red at the bottom.

So I just madly click until I get no error.

And yes, Stop does nothing, it used to, but no longer.

Can someone confirm this is normal? This is what happens when you haven't imported a repositories keys into your trusted database. I would have figured these keys were already trusted on a Nokia Device. That's a little disconcerting actually.

Egoshin: You don't have to upgrade your device this way, but just to see something: run "apt-get upgrade" in a terminal and say no when it asks to continue (if it asks).

Does it try and update the software you're looking for?

Well I'll admit there is something strange when NDI's shows fine.. and yet yours does not.

Definitely some underlying cause I'm not seeing.. it could be that GPG error..

Just to clarify: You did not delete the files I recommended in the previous post?

My guess is probably. Someone has updated the libraries but not the main applications that use them yet (or you haven't installed an application that has required an updated version) - and since those are things normally hidden by app manager they wouldn't show in the updates there.

On the other hand, some others no longer work, like Google Latitude Updater, it's missing some QT4 dependencies. I had it before the PR1.1. Why would anyone remove libs active apps depend on but leave the apps?

For people on 1.0? Shouldn't all dependencies be in the repos?

Edit:
a) I do, it's international/EU it has no numbers after the version

b) Do you guys speak of the AM log? The AM > top menu > show log? Because mine is empty. I had stuff in there before 1.1, all "ignoring version on <insert lib here>". Empty now, it just says "App Manager etc etc -51"

This gives me more to work with. When on WiFI it looks like a DNS problem.. try using the google DNS servers described in a thread where someone in ireland was getting similar responses.

Again in this thread with almost identical readouts to yours with wifi. But, this may lead to being a problem in how the new firmware uses DNS entries.

Try adding 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to your /etc/resolv.conf and see if that fixes your wifi problems.

For the 3G - what exactly is the error?

In theory, yes. But I've also wondered this myself on how Maemo is going to handle dependencies. For example, say someone ports a CLI app that does something useful (pianobar, for example, for pandora radio) and then someone else creates a GUI front-end for it.. if the GUI frontend gets votes *before* pianobar itself gets votes.. would the GUI wind up in extras before pianobar can? How is this prevented?

Definitely a topic for a different thread though..

Re: Application manager broken

Didn't he say no error, it's just very very slow?

Also, my wifi actually NATs to my PC, second NIC. The PC resolves repository.maemo.org just fine. I did notice, though, that doing a DNS on the name THEN tapping update makes it update in like 5 seconds, which is odd. It usually takes like 20 or so.

GUI wouldn't be allowed to enter Extras before pianobar is there as long as GUI is packaged properly (has pianobar as a dependency)

I'll have a go at changing the DNS settings after the terminal thing is done. Since my last post it is only 33% now so it'll probably take an hour or so.

And the 3G error (I'll confirm this when this thing is done as well) is something along the lines of:

I'll try and refresh the sources over 3G and it'll say "sources were only partially refeshed, click details for a detailed report" or something, and in the details part for the packages that didn't refresh it says "Proxy CONNECT aborted" (I'm pretty sure - again, I'll double check soon).

And that's all fine.. but the people experiencing this application manager problem appear to have DNS servers that are returning bad ip addresses for the maemo.org repositories. Most notably: 1.0.0.0.

As the other guy said in a link I posted - pre-1.1 he was able to manually edit his advanced settings and set his DNS servers to google's.. and they worked. But *after* the 1.1 update, it appears the advanced settings are not taking effect; or are at least being ignored.. and instead the other /var/run/resolv.conf.wlan0 is being used with the DHCP DNS servers, not the manually added ones.

This would "appear" to be a bug introduced in 1.1 that the Advanced Settings->DNS is not working (would need testing). This does not solve the problem of people unable to get to repositories because of bad DNS servers - but unfortunately theres not much we can do about it. We have to somehow force the Google DNS servers to be used instead, in these cases. Not difficult: If the Advanced Settings worked.. since they aren't appearing to - you have to do it by hand.

So, by changing my DNS settings, technically everything should work fine over WiFi, and I just won't be able to download things over 3G from the repos that don't work because of the "Proxy CONNECT aborted" error?

I can live with that I guess.

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

Do any https sites work in the browser? The app manager is only doing standard http/https downloads.
