Re: The future of this Community - My Take

Hi everyone,

My first post here, I've been lurking for a bit (mostly on the N900 sub-forum as it seemed the logical one for a new N900 owner) but I have just read right through this thread and the last post from Texrat highlights the effort people put into contributing to the community and ensuring others are encouraged to contribute themselves. I hope I can get involved and turn my generic geek interest into useful contribution :)

Cheers,
Alex

Searching is always step 1. When that falls flat on its face, then come back and ask.

I'm going to jump in and thank Emma for some excellent suggestions. And probably alarm the long-time users by admitting that I feel less welcome here now than when I first arrived. I feel - and I accept that it's a feeling and it would take a lot of effort to pin-point why - that some of the long-time regulars have hardened in their attitude to newcomers. Given the sheer size of the influx that would be understandable: when I arrived we were few enough to be a novelty. So I'd echo some of what Emma says about tone.

You want practical suggestions for making the place more welcoming? The trouble is they're all still in planning and development and I know the answer will be "we're working on that". But meanwhile, newcomers still arrive.

Anyway to list the suggestions:

* Single site log-in
* Tame Bugzilla or get him a little less-fierce brother
* Work out how you want brainstorm to function - and till then don't tell people off for doing it wrong: we don't know what right is.
* Make good feedback from testing easy to provide - make the 'where' of feedback easy to find.
* Make the wiki much more visible from the talk page
* Make Power search the default option
* Improve the search in wiki

And one extra: make a general n900 forum that's not about hardware or fremantle and let the people who want to rant do it there.

I have loved being here. I was made incredibly welcome when I arrived. I have received endless help, advice, patience as well as warmth and friendship. So why do I feel so awkward here now?

Most of the people doing this work are volunteering. That's how it is in a .org. Many of us work full time jobs and have families. We're really doing the best we can. I understand that "in process" is a tasteless answer, especially to newcomers, but it sure beats "WONTFIX".

I agree. I'd call it "Complaints" or some such and let it be the bucket for rants. No problem with that concept.

Because you grew into a leader, and ran into the same walls that we ancient relics frequently do. Welcome to your first maemo.org wall. It will not be the last. May it not defeat you. I pray your fire will rekindle to burn it down.

Been there, keep slamming into that.

Nah, I call it a drover longcoat, not a duster. Australian, not western. But yeah, seeing as my sense of fashion was made fun of at geek Maemo convention, it's clear I'm a sad case.

To finish I would like to make a statement - I expect that by the end of March 2010 the N900 will have matured into a hot device I would take over any phone on the market. If not, I will go to Dubai to milk cows in the desert.

(BTW, Im obviously interested in your response :D)

I look forward to seeing you here - but I do think you will have to milk camels and not cows. :-)

Haha I have to apologise, in that case I think camels will be just as good - let's hope the N900 will be good by then :)

Now we see more and more posts pointing to the next big think ("Handled in Harmattan"?) instead of dealing with how a user can or cannot accomplish what they want on the N900 with Maemo 5.

Had I done little research before ordering and buying, I would have not done it. I expect a device of this price to have support (more than namely support) for longer than a ~year. If updating N900 to Maemo 6 isn't possible, I'm pretty surely boycotting Nokia in the future. Just look how Apple does it's OS updates? Wouldn't hurt Nokia.
