I just got my invite today and would love to try this, although I have PR1.2 installed. Do you know if it will work with PR1.2? Thanks

I do not know. I have a prerelease device which requires special firmware so I haven't had the chance to upgrade yet. I cannot see a reason TOR would not be able to run in of itself but I cannot say that for one of its dependencies (I depend on one of the other chat protocols for its UI)

TOR and DC both work in PR 1.2
It may be my imagination, but TOR seems to be working even better now with PR 1.2

Ok, am testing this out right now. Have a quick question, how do I send a sms? I clicked on the New IM, the select contact come up but I got nothing in there. Is there a way to send SMS by typing in the phone number?

1. Open contacts app, search contact look for "Google Voice IM"
2. Open conversations app, select "New IM", search contact, select contact detail
3. Use DC, enter number and click SMS.

I guess if you want to send an SMS to an arbitrary number (thats not present in GV address book) then DC is your only option: #3.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

1) When I open the contact app. All i have is Phone, SMS, and Call through Google Voice
2) Under Conversation app. New IM, Select Contact dialog come up, I dont' see any contact or contact detail. It said, (no contacts)
3) I like this integration apps more than DC, but if this don't work out I might have to use DC..

Also, do you know why when I receive a sms. I got duplication messages in my Conversations app?

Duplicates would be a bug and once we work through the other issues, remind me about it so we can work together to resolve it.

There are several ways of doing things:
  • Through system contacts. This is a contact with a telephone number. Due to a bug in Maemo (as far as I can tell) they only let me have one button here so its for calls.
  • Through GV contacts. All of your GV contacts with numbers should be in your contact list. They should have a Call and an SMS button.
  • Through Phone/Conversations. Phone works by entering number and switching call type to "Google Voice" or something. Conversations works by going to the menu, selecting "Send IM to", selecting your GV account for "User Account" and manually entering the phone number into the "To" field.

I believe the last item on bullet 3 is what you are looking for.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

Yup, bullet 3 is exactly what am looking for. It would be kool if this could be done. When click on New IM from Conversation app, there is a field that allow you to enter a phone number( just above the Select Contact text) and the Google contacts still appear below it!
Anyway, looking forward to getting the duplicate message issue resolve. Nice program. Thanks

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

Also on the side note about the system contact only allow one button. Can this be done? Am not a coding guru, actually I know nothing about coding so please don't yell at me. It just a though. Can you have the template for that only one button and somehow overlay two small button(link?) on top of it? Maybe one for Call and one for SMS?

Umm, I thinkl there might be a confusion on one our our sides. This can be done. You don't use the "New IM" button but through the app menu "Send IM to" button.

Not really. It works by me just flagging "hey put something there" and then they control the UI.

epage,
Thanks for all your help. I have figured out everything including the duplication issue. It not your program that is having problem. The problem is on my GV account setting. The problem is fixed and now everything is good.

I'm guessing you forwarded the SMS to your cell number and you had TOR grab the SMS's?

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

exactly.. disabling the sms forwarding from GV work out nicely. keep up the good work.. am not sure about others, but I am sure appreciate and enjoy TOR.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that all voice and im accounts seem to working without any errors since pr 1.2? - including TOR.
epage, you'd sent some bug report to the telepathy folks, do you recon it's been fixed?
I haven't needed to reconnect nor restart the phone since I flashed pr 1.2
Kinda feeling empty because of the lack of problems :D

I've not received any notifications about my bugs being fixed. I'm glad to hear they are good and I look forward to upgrading when I get home.

As for the lack of problems, don't worry I bet you'll find some more soon and be plenty happy to report them ;)

More accurately it depends on "Pidgin protocols plugin for Conversations and Contacts " or lesser known as "account-plugin-haze". I re-use their UI for configuration.

Just want to say great job, I've been using dialcentral and like it, and have been watching this thread for a while; couple of questions? Does the "dial through GV" working yet? if yes super! if not couldn't you program it so that it dials your account and then dials I believe 2 then the actual number (512-xxx-xxxx,2512-xxx-xxxx) I remember there was a way to do it with dumb phones with out going thru either mobile site or the full site.

But again great work and keep it up!

Is there any easy way to quickly swap the callback number?

When I am using sip, I would like the callback to come to my sip number, but everywhere else I would like the callback to come to my tmobile number.

Dial through GV has worked for a long while.

The callback can be modified through the nickname and through advanced. Beyond that I'm fairly limited in what I can do with the UI but if you have suggestions I'd appreciate them

I take it by offline you mean off-data but not voice? I'm unsure how practical it is to implement such a feature with TOR. I think Google does it with an API that I don't have access to while for me would require auto-calling a cell number, and pumping DTMF tones into it to enter a password I'd have to get from the user and then enter the number. I think it'd be best to leave that as an exercise for a stand-alone app rather than an integrated one.

Yeah thats what i was talking about. So to use the "call thru GV" I have to be online, I can't use it straight from the contacts? is that correct?

More so that suspect there are implementation details that would prevent it from smoothly integrating with TOR. It would be best as a stand alone app like DIalcentral

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

Just installed TOR this morning. This was the key linchpin that allowed me to go with a data-only cellphone plan. I can't thank you enough for it.

Alas, I'm currently experiencing two problems with using TOR for sending/receiving GV SMS messages:

(1) Sometimes my incoming messages don't show up on the phone. They show up on GV's webpage but never make it to my phone. I tried adjusting the polling time but that didn't seem to help. I've been in my office using the same wifi connection all morning so it's not like I didn't have internet access when the messages were sent. Is there something obvious that I'm missing here or is this just a known problem with TOR?

(2) I have another problem where all of my outbound GV SMS messages in Conversation through TOR are getting labeled with a random person from my contact list rather than my name. I've submitted a report in Bugzilla but I wanted to check here to see if anybody else has experience this. Here is a screenshot of the problem; note that my name is neither BP or LM and that I am sending messages to KB.

Thanks again.

I've heard about this and I'm wanting to work on it but its one of those fun things of finding the right test case or the right information to log to the log file

I think this is Nokia's issue. I'll hunt through b.m.o when I'm not at work to see double check that

Now unfortunately it looks like no messages are showing up at all. I tried deleting the acct and starting over, we'll see whether that works.

Does it mater if I have the GV webage open at the same time? Will it only grab unread messages?

If this problem continues, I am more than willing to help you debug it.

TOR and Dialcentral work independent of the web browser.

TOR has some annoying logic because of issues with GV. When google threads a conversation and a new item comes in, they mark the whole conversation as unread so I can't rely on that. They also automatically mark things as read when you reply. The problem is if you have an active conversation with someone, you might send them a message before you check for the new one, making it so you don't see their message as unread. Again, another reason to not rely on if they mark something as read.

So I have to do all of my own "is read" tracking which is prone to issues especially since I don't want the cache of messages I keep to grow forever

Hi,

First of all great software. I am still learning.

I have two phones in my Google Voice. I labeled them like this
Work
Home

But somehow I cannot set my callback through nickname field. It always pick Work. And When I send sms my nick appears as Work phone number. I am not sure why it cannot match "home" nick with "home" label from Google voice. Any ideas?

Currently you have to enter the phone number itself. That would be an interesting feature request to use the callback nicknames. Feel free to file it.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

can someone explain to me how does the one ring handle incoming calls?

For example, I have a tmobile number, which is bound to my n900 sim card, and a gizmo5 number. Both are set in google voice, and both are to ring when someone calls my google voice number. In my n900, I have a SIP/gizmo5 account setup so I can take the SIP call over Wifi.

The problem is that with this setup, whenever someone calls my googlevoice number, I get two rings on my n900, one from tmobile, and one from SIP. This can be very bothersome sometimes as there will be two ring tones and one not stop even the other one is answered.

Can TOR handle this situation to *one ring* only?

Note that I need googlevoice to forward to both Gizmo5 and Tmobile so that I don't miss anycalls when I am not on Wifi networks.

The short answer is The One Ring does not affect in-bound calls I leave that all to GV. How would you imagine GV or TOR should handle a situation like this?

the logical method is (some other app perhaps) to set google voice's "phones to ring" to gizmo5 only when wifi is enabled, and set to tmobile when wifi is disabled

Except for me who used SIP with my T-Mobile data plan. Besides that I don't think this kind of magic belongs in TOR. Too much policy, would be better as a separate utility.

This might've been discussed before, but can TOR handle contacts from the builtin contacts app. I do remember a problem where it was doubling the contacts,so in my settings i have it were it never syncs contacts from GV, has this been fixed? The only reason i ask is because when smsing from TOR my contacts avatar or pic is not being shown.

The only integration with the built in contacts is starting phone calls. I have a bug out to Nokia about SMS.

Pre-1.2 (I just realized I didn't re-install TOR after I put 1.2 on so I can't so for sure about that) should have avatars that describe the phone type. I could try to grab google contact avatars but I'm I'd rather leave that for if/when they ever release a public GV API that integrates with all their other APIs.

For now, I think its best to leave it such that you have to explicitly call through GV. How come that is a problem? The dialpad has a button for switching over to call with GV and contacts have a button to call using GV.
