Any more clarity on what you love in DC and hate about TOR?

I do plan on eventually making incoming voicemails in TOR have the rich text formatting that DC presents. I actually started a branch for it last night. I don't expect much progress on that though due to other priorities.

There may be a huge degree of user-error/unfamiliarity with my OneRing/RTComm experience as I only ever used it for 5-10 minutes.

So, I'll be more than happy to change any of my usage should that be needed:

1) Dialcentral

Likes:
- Stand-alone app that launches relatively quickly,
- With one click I see all my SMS messages, Transcribed voicemails - or both,
- I often reply to a text more than to a person/contact so I like that I just click on the SMS I want to reply to and I can immediately start to type away.

Dislikes:
Still some odd formatting in the SMS text entry page. I can never see how many characters are left without scrolling down - and the text doesn't wrap/stop at the right edge of the entry window.

2) OneRing/RTComm/Nokia Chat

Dislikes:
- I'm sure this has nothing to do with OneRing but the IM Log Viewer app that got installed with RTComm shows the very first vmail to be from today - when in actuality it's nine days old. Already then I think I started to distrust the whole package.

- When I am in the Chat application I can see the list of my contacts. If I select one of them I am taken to a screen to enter a text message - with two 'tabs' on the left (one with my phone number) and one the name of the contact.
I don't understand why my phone number is shown there nor do I understand if I will be issuing an SMS if I am in that 'tab' and an 'IM' if I am in the other 'tab'. Also, the screen always defaults so that the full phone number/contact name is never shown and I have to drag the divider out a bit every time.

- When I double-tap my phone number as mentioned above I get a message pop-up saying 'Not available'. So, ok?

- I have both IM and SMS capabilities for many of my contacts in this app I am lost as to what feature in the app does what.

- I sent a friend what I THOUGHT was an IM and her reply back was 'who is this?' I later saw that message in DC so I can only assume it was an SMS but since she didn't know who sent it I (and I text her a lot from DC) I can only assume that it looked different on her end.

- When closing the instant messaging window - I always close the whole app.

Anyway, hate it.

You're a great developer and I'm just sad that you have to put your work into a ****-application like the Nokia-chat one instead of doing something own like the great DC app you developed.

I'm still a bit behind on versions, but I saw a similar message when I upgraded from (I believe) 0.7.4 to 0.7.5. I don't see that it should make a difference, but I did that upgrade via apt-get on the command line.

After a reboot the error has not come back yet.

@epage

I got another network error, this one sorted itself out by disabling and enabling TOR. I believe it occurred when switching from T-Mo to wifi. I have a copy of the log for this. I can post / pm / put it in bugzilla if you want it. Looks to be the same error as the last one.

0.7.13 is going to the auto-builder and contains a bugfix for something introduced in 0.7.11

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

Reminder for those reading this, this is heavily Maemo 4.1 specific

I don't mean this to argue against you about which is better, there are use cases for each, I was using Dialcentral exclusively earlier today on my n900, I'm just interested in us both understanding how we use each app. This could possibly improve our experiences with each and help guide me in improving both.

TOR Benefits
  • Better notification support
  • Always in the background, so when responding to apps its faster to load
  • There is some load time when you bring up the contact list, probably per person whether its faster or slower than loading Dialcentral

I admit, I don't use my chat history all that much and when I do I go to the GV website rather than using Dialcentral or RTComm's history. I'm not a heavy texter and never really developed a dependence on it but it sounds like some do since I think I heard a lot of people clamoring for an optional traditional SMS history viewer for the n900.

I'm not sure I understand this Dialcentral Benefit. A new message comes in with RTComm, I read it, reply, and then if its a one-shot message, I close it. For either, if I want to create a new message I go the contacts list, dialpad, etc.

The wrap is a really annoying behavior that a bug has been filed to me. I think its a GTK issue and is reproducible on my desktop. I thought I created a work around for it in the latest version...

I believe its an RTComm issue

The left side isn't a set of "tabs" but a list of participants. Selecting them doesn't really do anything. You see your callback number because that is the "alias" I made associated with your account so there wouldn't be any ambiguity of what phone you made calls from.

If you are "chatting" with a contact on your GV list, it sends a text. If its on your GTalk list, it sends an IM.

Unsure what was going on with the sender phone number. It might be a GV thing.

Its one of those trade-offs: should I and every other protocol implementer work on our own imperfect UI to handle things or do we leverage a common imperfect UI and save a lot of work.

I'm not a heavy texter and haven't been interested in drastically improving Dialcentral's texting interface. I considered that outside of its scope and have asked people if they were interested, to go ahead and write one. I think I even brought up the idea of doing something like TOR before (I just never had the idea of integrating the phone calling till last September which is what kicked off TOR).

For me, the benefits of Dialcentral are
  • When TOR is messed up
  • Support for CSVs (I don't like importing my csvs into the Maemo 5 contact list because it makes it annoying when I download a new one)
  • Call history

Uggh, too many long posts in one night, I'm off to bed.

Hey silvermountain, you should grab a more current version of DialCentral.

Eric has cleaned up the coding for SMS texting and it's so much better than before.

Definitely check it out.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

I've played around with OneRing a bit and found three things that I really dislike/would like to see changed;

a) There is no date in the timestamp on incoming text messages.
Today I received a text in Onering that was stamped 15:01 or something and I replied to it - without knowing that it was sent 15:01 the previous day.. I'd like something like a date or an x hours/days ago stamp,

b) If I have the ability to receive both sms and IM's from a person these message types both come in in windows labelled "Instant Message", confusing,

c) I wish there was a message log in Onering that was as easy to view as the one in Dialcentral (chronological list of all sms and/OR transcribed vmails.

I think this is more a "feature" of GV, not TOR. It may be the lag in the system (sip to gv).

a) on N900, they do have dates. Don't know about N8x0. If it was an old message (read) TOR shouldn't have downloaded it. If it was new (unread), that could be an issue.

b) TOR integrates into the IM system. That means all messages in TOR are treated as IM's. The sms's from GV are IM's to TOR. The only difference in messages is the system they come in on. TOR would always be am "sms".

c) I don' t think the IM systems are setup to do that, so TOR wouldn't be able to either? Keep using DC for that feaure?

Sounds like DC is more to your liking than TOR.

@epage: So is the no-date an OS2008 thing and if so can it be added to the GV sms message time-stamps?

I noticed the same issue a few days ago.

On my n800 I see this too. I've had messages I got last year that come in as brand new sometimes. I just happen to know that the person has not sent me an sms. It hasn't happened recently though.

Can you have multiple google voice accounts logged in at the same time? I have one for home and planning on using one for business needs. right now I have the forwarded to email, but would love to have both register.

Is the call back number changeable on the fly so to speak like dialcentral. Often I wish to make a call from home and want my GV number to show. its perfect switching the callback in DC! Thanks for answers, looking to install .14

In theory you can have multiple accounts configured.

What is presented in the UI as your "nickname" is your callback number and can be changed on the fly. I wish I could offer it as a selectable list but can't.

Well to be honest that's not going to be too much help to me. I will however still have dialcentral installed so I guess its not a big deal as I can do it easily from there.

*Edit. I'm not sure I follow the whole polling times formula. Not that I think its wrong, I'm just not able to figure it out. If I set it to normal mode, how often will it be checking for voice mails when idle, vs active? Ball park number would suffice how often is the longest amount of time to pass before checking again? I have seen some info on the front page but I think you commented changing things around for the pooling and want to be sure. You also mentioned configuring polling times, not seeing that option either. give me a shout out when you can no rush :)

Voicemails: When "available" voicemails update after every 2 hours. They also update a minute after a missed SIP call

Texts: When "available" texts take at most 10 minutes to update. When you've received or sent a text it updates at first after 22 seconds and then grows geometrically (22, 24, 28, 36, 52, etc).

Contacts: When "available" update every 12 hours.

I mentioned in a psot on the Dialcentral thread, the only Maemo 4.1 bug filed is that you can't configure The One Ring, including its polling times. This made me decide to move to polling times that favor battery or low latency.

There is a debug mode in which you can force an update to happen.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for. After reading your post on page 10 about changing the defualt polling time, I took a peak at /usr/lib/theonering/gvoice/session.py. It looks like you may have updated the code since you posted the comment on how to change the polling times. Towards the beginning, I can see a section you have with contackt 12, hours text, 10 mins...ect. If I change the 10 to 7, with that then change the polling time default from 10 to max 7? (seems like it to me just want to make sure :) I also would like to recommend changing you polling just slightly. I would check after sending/receiving to 30s, 30s, 1m, 2, 4, default. That seems more than ample for polling. If they haven't responded be the time the 4 min check happens, they probably aren't in a hurry for a response :) Just a thought, might save some battery and seems like a fair amount of checking.

*edit I'm running .14 and it seems very stable so far. I have become a victim of the unable to cancel a call last night (well my gf was the victim) She got a ringing phone at about 3am last night because I accidentally started a call session with her and there is no going back! Other than that I like/love the app. I went through and added icons to each contact, letting me know home/cell/food place. It fulfills my want for pics to represent the contacts I requested many months ago. F'ing beautiful.

*Edit 2
Is there a way to include a small picture with the application and make it default for the google voice contacts? It was a pain adding a distinctive pic for each to tell the dif. Say a free/open icon picture that will be default instead of the little guy icon maemo defaults.

*edit 3
I'm sure most have tried it or figured it out by now, but if you use the internet call app in maemo 4.1 you can select your contacts to call right from there OR use the keypad and dial any number you wish even if they are not in your contacts. Again most probably already knew this, some I hope I just showed a new feature! Love it

You can hand-modify the source code to change it up. It sounds like you are reading the right lines.

You validate by checking what settings are actually used by entering the following command in the debug prompt "get_polling". You can check the current status of each polling machine with "get_state_status"

Funny, The UI on top of TOR provides cancel but TOR doesn't support it and people keep bringing up how essential it is. Dialcentral does not have cancel in the UI and I've gotten no requests on it. It is something that could be added, I have the API for it. Testing could be a pain but eh. Feel free to file a request.

I'm curious. I guess it is more steps. I've listed them out below (all from memory)

Dialcentral:
  • Switch Tab
  • Hit button
  • Select different number or hand enter it

TOR (Maemo 4.1)
  • Click presence icon
  • Click "Account Settings"
  • Select account
  • Click next several times
  • Hand enter callback in the nickname field

Sadly I do not know of a good way to fix this due to protocol and UI limitations.

Hi epage,

First I want to say thanks for your work on this. I think TOR is an important addition to the N900.

I've scoured this thread, and the listed bugs, but didn't find much information, which makes me wonder if it is something I have done or am doing.

More often than not, I get an "Unable to connect" message for the Google Voice plugin. this happens the majority of the times I launch it, either initially, or after disabling/enabling the plugin, as well as after reboot. i have fb, skype and ovi contacts live on it, and Google Talk disabled. I have played with different polling settings, but can't quite get it to consistently connect, on either T-Mo or wifi. When it connects, it works fine. but that is less than half the time I launch it.

Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting this? Are others seeing this? Should I uninstall and reinstall? I am running the latest version as I update whenever one is avaiable.

Thanks again for all of your work on this, and in the meantime, I'll keep trying to figure it out!

I've heard about GVMax before. Its kind of convoluted. You have GV email your texts to it and then it will send them to you over XMPP. This might prove faster and more battery efficient but TOR is easier to setup.

Thanks again for all of your work on this, and in the meantime, I'll keep trying to figure it out!

THis has been a long standing issue, mostly for Maemo 5 users, that I have been unsuccessfully been working to resolve. There is a bug filed on it

(n900/pr1.1.1/0.7.14)

Still getting the occasional "network" error, seems to be happening more frequently with the latest version. Generally see it when connecting to a new network (going from wifi to 3g). Generally, going into account settings and "saving" w/o changes fixes it.

On that note, since I don't always check when moving from network to network (and my N900 seems to occasionally jump on 3G then back to wifi on its' own).

Would it be possible to add either a sound or vibration alert when it runs into the existing handler problem? I went several hours yesterday with a network error w/o knowing about it, it's happened before as well.

Would you like me to file an enhancement?

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

I just uploaded 0.8.0.

I added default avatars based on phone type. Nothing else really.

The avatars are a massive help - now I don't have to go into the contact and try to guess if its a cell phone or a home phone.
Much better! Muchas gracias!

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

I would like to also share my Network Error problems. It has happened to me several times, the only way to fix was to reboot. I noticed it is happening when going from one internet connection to another. I leave my house to go to my brothers, connect to his wifi and it immediately gives the network error.
I have also experienced this at school as it requires us to go to a login website once connected to their wifi. The google voice times out and then network errors on each reconnect attempt.

Latest TOR update has apparently lost the Dialcentral icon.
and SMS/Chats no longer have names.

Yeah I went ahead and used one of the avatar icons for the package

What do you mean by no longer having names?

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

I uploaded 0.8.1. This should reduce some network errors (reverting something I thought would help). Also I added support for canceling calls. You have about 5 seconds. Let me know if that should be adjusted.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

With the latest version the Ring One no longer works for me :(
In the prior version 0.8.0 I would make a call, it would get initiated (the icon goes off then on again) and the call would get discontinued. In 2-3 seconds, I would receive a callback, pick up, and the destination phone would start ringing.

With 0.8.1, initiated call goes into process, but does not disconnect. Instead, it continues, and then I receive a notification of a missed call (missed callback), which I could have not taken because the initial call was still on.

Please help. Thank you.

What moodswinger said.
Also: Lost wifi connection (out of range) and I'm back to Network Errors.

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

epage,
he mentioned the dialcentral icon being gone, i think he ment in the rtcomm presence status. if i click the green circle at the top of my N810 i can see the AIM running man but the TOR icon does not appear at all

*EDIT
5 seconds seems a bit much. usually if I made a call by mistake, i know it before the call app even opens. I vote for a 2 second delay

I added support for canceling calls. As part of this I delayed closing the callback channel for 5 seconds. I didn't think there would be this side effect. I've now dropped it to 2 seconds.

I thought It lets you know of another incoming call while you are in one and you can switch calls? That is what I was relying on if the wait was too long.

I'm still not sure what is causing it but I've at least got an idea on how to improve it.

Telepathy uses something called 2-phase initialization. The first phase acquires a resource. I'm suspecting that for some people the second phase is never called, preventing it from ever getting into a state to release that resource. I'm adding a 5 second wait after the first phase after which I just give up. I will be very interested in seeing people's logs after I upload my next version to see if they are hitting this case at all.

My log from the latest set of disconnects I got on my n900 still baffles me though. Writing out an explanation has made me think about it more. I'm not breaking it out into a separate post

Oh, didn't realize. I'll look further into the icon issue.

1 hour 30 minutes later the first phase of initialization happens again but fails because the (11:19:26) occurrence was never cleaned up.

It seems very strange for the second phase of initialization to have never completed

Re: [Announce] The One Ring

I just pushed to the auto-builder 0.8.2
  • Improved debug logs, removing noise
  • Reduced allotted disconnect time from 5 seconds to 2
  • Auto-cleanup resources when client only does phase 1 of 2 connection creation phases
  • Added 26x26 and 64x64 variants of icons to hopefully fix issues on Maemo 4.1
