BTW, I was using my N800 in the lunch room today and it was an instant hit. "Where can I buy one?" was asked by every second person, if not two out of three..

I was at CompUSA Saturday and was really gratified to see not only the N80 and 8801 on sale (in a US store!) but a guy and his girlfriend each spent a lot of time on both the 770 and N800. They looked highly interested.

TheThe Linksys WRT54G doesn't even have USB, but some realizedit had a
superflous LED and a spare inputpin on the processor. All you need for USB host is a a 5v, ground, in and out and some way of reading the input and a way of toggling the output between 0 and 1 to match the protocol. On the WRT, by soldering a usb cable to the right two spots and doing EVERYTHING in the software driver the fake USB 2.0 quite well.

One way or another there will be USB host on the n800. It might just be more work than you like... Linksys WRT54G doesn't even have USB, but some realizedit had a superflous LED and a spare inputpin on the

I own one of those routers, but a router is not a portable device (or as expensive); assuming that N800 doesn't have USB host mode, but the internal support, how many would break their warranty (or risk damaging their device) to open it up and solder a USB port? Would the end result justify such drastic actions?

I think at some point we have to get out of the mentality of "I'm doing it because it can be done" and think more practical.

Just my $0.02...

Well, if it turns out that the existing port can, after all, be _used_ in host mode (like it can on the 770), then we should need only the same kind of non-invasive fix: Insert a little gadget between the N800 and e.g. your USB disk, the gadget would only be there to provide 5V DC.

Obviously, you'd also need a new kernel, because the USB host drivers are not compiled in ITOS 2007's kernel, but even that is not major surgery.

You can still use host mode with N800. You need to get a modified cable and updated kernel to use OTG USB (once OTG support is there). 5V is provided by HW, but no 500mA current can be drawn (OTG spec probably defines max current).

I already got my 4GB cards, so SDHC support doesn't do much for me right now. :D :D :D
