Google Maps for N900? if not when?
 

Hello all, Sry if this has been answered, but I miss having Gmaps :(
I also tried the Gmap website which the Maemo geo locator plug in but that setup something works and doesn't compare to a full blown google maps app.

If google maps isnt coming to N900 what can I use to view Traffic, search for local Stores, and get driving directions.
And Yes I know that Ovi map can do "some" of that but its slow. And why does the N900 have Ovi map 1.0??:confused:

I have but it has some heavy lag, no traffic, not as easy to get to as a app.

1. Install meaemo-location
2. Put a bookmark to http://maps.google.com/maps/m on your desktop.

You will get full screen map (with GPS location) which is much easier to navigate than the desjtop version.

How do you move the map on that mobile map page? Every time I touch and move it it moves the whole window and not the location viewed on the map.

I did that. It doesnt work something, even when Im standing outside.
ALso no traffic :(

Use the Broswer Mouse Pointer ( swipe from the left of the screen)

What thats crazy! I just brought this one. Nokia needs to bring their new Ovi Maps to the N900 soon!

This is terrible advice and yet, everyone gives it. You can't zoom out with that version of google maps mobile on the N900, so please don't offer it as a solution, until someone figures out a way.

It been available in Miami, FL for years. Just doesn't let me click it on the Mobile website :(

You can Zoom, kinda. You just need to download and install something to Mod it.

Yes coming to Maemo doesn't mean Maemo 5 it could mean Maemo 6?

I do think 3.03 will come to the n900. As we all know we have a very old version of Ovi maps and just doesn't make sense for Nokia to update unless they're going to offer the latest with voice.

Imagine the disgruntled Maemo user base if they just updated to 3.0 without voice. Maemo is part of Nokia's "bright" future and they need to give good support.

It's not an old version, it's a new version which is why it lacks functionality compared to the more mature Symbian counterpart. The version numbers of Maemo's and S60's Ovi maps aren't comparable at all.

Google Maps works for me either fully and in its mobile incarnation.
Layers and so on, even Google Latitude is updated automatically.. I can move around with the Browser Mouse Mode easily and it's quite fast on Vodafone UK 3G network.

As this is the full blown google map app, how come it doesn't compare to itself?

An alternative might be dual-booting into Android.
This would also offer gmail and solve other issues.
Nice to see community takes action this way.

Other alternative could be to port some of the free Android apps that are based on Open Street Map. This would evenoffer more than OVI maps navigation (not on roadmap for legacy M5 N900 anyhow)....

I Did. I now have a blue check mark by Traffic but it still would show the Traffic info on the map.
