Hmm. What To Do If You Can't Find a Wi-Fi Connection...

Just curious... what do you do when you can't connect via a wi-fi connection??

You mean in terms of needing a fix? Find someone with a bluetooth phone and beg!

But really... I'm always up for a game of Mahjong.

You can:

1. Cry about the lack of wifi in that place
2. Scream at those who have locked wlan
3. Set up a BT modem via mobile operator setup wizard so it will connect through your (net enabled) phone.

Start up FBReader? Roger Zelazny's "Damnation Alley" is what I'd recommend at the moment.

(it's a home-scan from a desintegrating paperback, so don't tell "the Man")

At those times (with no wi-fi) I can at least start the pdf reader with the bus traffic table.. ;-)

My own solution: Pay Verizon Wireless an additional $59.99/mo for Broadband Access Connection (tethering to my Bluetooth phone). Benchmarking with EV-DO gives me 617 kbps down, 82 kbps up (versus 1963/643 on 802.11g WiFi). Yeah, the bill sucks, but I'm addicted. It'll eventually get cheaper, like DSL did.

Hi.

I'm curious about the prices people need to pay for their mobile Internet access around the world. 60 dollars a month was quoted above, and it seems very expensive to me. Here in Finland, I have a bog standard deal with no monthly fee and about 1.5 euros/megabyte. Unlimited 3G/EDGE/GPRS access is about ten euros.

I consider my N800 to be always connected to the Internet, one way or another.

Here in Slovenia with Vodafone operator it costs: first megabyte is 4.2euros after first it cost's 0.42euros/megabyte and if you want unlimited connection you have to pay 21€ per month and on Vodafone we only have EDGE/GPRS, for 3G I would have to change operator, but EDGE is enough for now as I usually find Wi-fi, which is now on every other corner as you walk through town.

Best regards, DK

In the UK the mobile networks gouge you on internet access - the best deal by far is currently T-Mobile with unlimited internet access (excluding VoIP) for about £12.50/month but this is on top of a £20 monthly voice plan, locked in for 18 months...

The $59.99 Verizon Wireless data plan (US) also requires a voice plan on the same subscriber account. The bold print describes it as "Unlimited" usage, which the fine print defines as 5GB per month maximum. So forget about streaming those DVD movies.

Here in France the situation is also very bad for mobile data users. Most "plans" are ridiculously limited and/or overpriced.

The only individuals who actually benefit from a (non-corporate) unlimited data plan are the very few l33t geeks who subscribed to a limited Orange offer in the summer of 2005, for 50€/mo. There is, like, a black market for those, since Orange afterwards capped the traffic to 500MB/mo which makes it much less unlimited :-)

Blacklisted ports also come and go at the whim of the carrier. Moreover, until recently it was EDGE only, no 3G. An option for 3G users has just appeared on the Orange website (+4€/mo), but no one seems to know yet what sort of fine print it carries (or not)...
