Ok. Attached pictures show why I would like to hear your detailed documentation about how I can reproduce this at ANY HOME.
Right now its possible to make haze just with your own hand or other obstacle that is close to flash. This COULD be user error than can happen really easily (ok..when something might happen really easily it should be taken care on blueprints). I agree that picture quality is not always what you would expect from this camera. Especially blue tint and green. |

You get my vote. I get the issue too, you also do not get it all the time and it happens in differing low light conditions when flash is used. I wouldn't say it was caused just by the blue border though as I took all my pics landscape and the haze is always across the top which suggests to me light reflecting back off the chrome bezel. Although it does seem more prominent on the right of the image. To all the people that do not get the issue then what can I say apart from, aren't you the lucky ones, just because your unit doesn't suffer from the haze doesn't mean other units aren't defective in some small way.
Attached worse example I've currently got on my phone. Taken in really low light, haze is clearly visible. |

I guess, but I don't think that such an easy solution will convince them.
This is an example of how it should look correctly taken from the level 3 and 4 service manual (N900_RX-51_SM_L3_4.pdf). It seems a knows issue, less the blueish tint that's quite easy to fix. Feel free to use them as you see fit. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I've had some images very clear and others hazy. Hazy images are in lower light.

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I'd say that "the haze" is plain flare. so light enters somewhere from the sides to the lens. I can reproduce it very easily with no flash etc with my 14mm dslr objective
http://ic2.pbase.com/o6/37/96637/1/7...14mm35MD_2.jpg its harder to try not to make it flare http://www.completedigitalphotograph...m/thtSmall.jpg (see center top of image) for those who have the problem: how is your camera module positioned? mine is as left as it can be when looked from back. (so that the bigger holes edges dont barely overlap) |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I have the issue too, confirmed by the fact I have taken the same photo twice with and with out and cover on numerous times to replicate it.

Flare from what I ask as there were no ceiling lights on etc. Only light source other than the flash was coming in from behind me from the living room. So if the light rays decided to miraculously wrap themselves around me and enter lens from top right or produce a flare then I'm impressed. It was a dark room as in no lights on in the room, ok apart from the xmas lights on the tree and the room behind me. My cover is open as far as it is possible, but like I said just because your unit doesn't show the same problems doesn't mean others do not. It's like any other device, product etc, some units will show symptons that others do not. |

Sorry if that sounded like I'm ranting as I'm truly not :)

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I've had the hazy issue as well.
And on a sunny day I've had a few pictures come out hazy as well from he sunlight reflecting. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
In my opinion there is couple of different things happening
- Haze because of hands or other object close to flash (Flash) - Blue border of the camera cover that causes reflection in certain lighting conditions (object < 2m) (Flash & Low light) - Silver border - Top/corner picture haze (Flash) - Silver border - tint because of overall reflection (object < 2m) (Flash) |

In my opinion it's obviously blue reflection caused by the cover + flash/certain lighting conditions.
However this is not a camera and it's not even a dedicated camera phone. I honestly don't care about this reflection nor about drawing a line on the cover. I'd care a lot if nokia would finally quit separating market segments in multimedia/business/hacker/etc and stop cutting corners, eg. this is a hacker phone, not a camera phone. I know economy 's a b**** and devices and ideas have to be feasible but a high end sensor would have been awesome but what's done is done and most of us didn't get N900 for the camera. Fixing a small reflection or replacing the cover won't help as much as some more advanced post processing algorithms would. This fixes it for me. Can't say anything until more of you are willing to try this - just take the cover off first. Sorry for the blurry pic but you oughta get it by now. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
don't know why people can't see what's so damn obvious.
just look at the camera when flash is enabled and start focusing. as the flash goes on you'll see that the chrome ring is reflecting light from the right side of the leds which is at the top right corner of the camera. you only have to look at my photos. the haze is right there! also the blueish touch is there. so why deny this problem?! just be happy if you haven't got this problem but don't say that there is no problem at all... IT IS. |

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
Don't think the chrome has any importance, the light form the flash is very strong so that a reflection that small would be 100% covered by the much stronger light of the flash that doesn't need the chrome to go in all directions any way.

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I voted no. I took 3 pictures :
- Without Flash - With Flash - With Flash and no Backcover All 3 same good quality. Hope the replacement will be the same. I have damn pixel errors. This is the second phone that goes back to Nokia :( |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I also have troubles. On the right corner on top it's blurry and blue. Removing the back help a lot.

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I can't produce this effect. Never got it on pictures I've taken so voted no.

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I think that there is couple of issues with this thread. Same kind of issues are with some bug reports.
We have people reporting - Hazy images (top part) - Green images (whole image) - Blue images (whole image) And probably all of them are because of different things. SO I have asked now couple of times to reproduce this top HAZE issue and only way I managed to reproduce it was with my hand (see post before). I get bit blueish pictures, but i DO not get top part hazey pictures so right now i would vote NO answering directly to question. If I had taken 100 pictures and after watching them on my computer i noticed couple of them with haze on top would I remember that had I or not my hand or another object too close to flash from side? Probably NO! So I could answer YES but then again haze could be because of my own usage error. I think that main problem here is blueish tint/haze that can be reproduced by backcover on/off AND it seems to effect WHOLE IMAGE not top corner. I´m not saying that there is no issue I´m just trying to say that you have to be really really really specific with this. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
to all who had voted no, it's not always very visable.
@joshua.maverick: Maybe it's a good idea to make a quick tutorial to test if their N900 have this problem. I can't imagine that there is a difference. some photo's don't reveal the problem with me, but some do. I made some photo's in a pub, terrible haze visible, so I'll back you up |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I'm speaking about hazy images:
I think i can reproduze this. Go into a dark room, put on the light. Make a photo so that between you and the object to photograph is the light of the ceiling. For me it seems that light to the N900 reflects in the chrome ring. So the haze comes more if flash is used because flash is used if you don't have the sun as light source. But the haze can also come without flash if sun light reflects on the chrome ring. Sure, i'm puzzled... |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
and if you experience the haze, try making a new photo in the same conditions with the backcover off. that way you can tell for sure it's caused by the chrome ring.

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
Hope this is usefull :) Use a thin ear-cleaner cotton sticks or soft cotton to clean the sensor. This will have some improovement in quality when using flash.
In general cleaning this compact sensors from time to time is advisable. A fingerprint on the glass could dramatically decrease quality. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
My n900 had the same issue. The problem, i think, is the blue reflection of the lens cover in the silver external area. So what i did was simply put some small pieces of insulating tape around the corner of that shiny area, to avoid the reflection caused by the leds. And it worked!

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I have this same issue. it is very dissapointing. I have to constantly edit the brightness and contrast after every single pic i take and normaly that doesnt even clean it up. i can't show it to some one with out being ashamed that my super expensive super duty newest of the new nokia phone takes pics worst than the iphone. I may as well have a motorola razer take the pics. my n95 was the same lense and it took amazing pics thats why i am so confused. this haze is in every where. I was starting to think a ghost or spirit of some sort was hiding in my phone haunting it so it's good to know my phone isnt possesed and most people have this issue. sense buying this phone i have went to experience photographers, read countless website refferences, and brought phoptography books to learn if it was a issue with the settings and things of that nature. I didnt have to read one book to take brilliant pics with my n95. all the reading helped a little bit but the pic still comes out trash

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
i didnt specify before in my post what all problems i have with the camera.
1. hazy images (can be either all over or some times just in a upper portion or upper corner portion) 2. green images (sometimes the pics just come out with a heavy green tint) |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
Yea, i'm having this issue aswell. I did a test.
Here is with the back cover + flash enabled http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7...0217005.th.jpg Here is without the back cover + flash enabled http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/4...0217006.th.jpg You be the judge |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
Its quite simple, if you put somehitng in front of any camera lens then it distrots the image, like shooting through glass.
But if your that intent on taking photos then buy a camera for christ sake. Its quite simple, the Nokia case can be easily agreed with when they simply state, its a phone not a camera, the camera is a bonus. |
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I have to say, that with the last updates... the image quality is near perfect, really good for a phone.
|
Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
I have the haze, but I`m not sure WHAT causes it.....I`ve covered the chrome, covered the blue bezel, make sure that my fingers are not infront of the lens and still ....once in a while in a low light condition I get a blue haze.....makes me think that there must be something wrong with the timing of the dual leds

Re: Camera Haze Poll (if you do or do not, please submit an answer)
Note that there will always be a certain amount of reflection from the slider, even if you painted it black, only if it was a perfect mirror would the problems go away. The end result is still blueish mostly because of white balance adjustments.

I just looked into back and I understand how to fix it - the haze is just because of silver metallic rectangular surrounding camera hole and flash - it reflects light back to camera glass. The flash glass can't haze because it is (and camera glass too) inserted deeper than plastic base. The fix should be simple - get a black marker and blackout this rectangular. Thank you! |
