N900 camera night mode
N900 camera is awesome when using this in sufficient light but when switching to some darker place(although dual LED flash is there) the image quality is not acceptable. Can there be night mode enabling of N900 through any app??

Re: N900 camera night mode
What do you mean when say "Night mode"? Do some magic and increase camera quality? Science doesn't know such magic.
Night mode in sony cameras is made by removing infra red filter (this takes place for moving parts, so this is not suitable for mobile phones). |
Re: N900 camera night mode
Then what sort of magic does this "Science" played in making symbian so much comfortable to even capture images much clearly even when there is not sufficient light. Isn't is the NIGHT MODE feature in them. Go and see some mobile phone like N73, n81..............................
Open there camera app and where you find A, click there and open and enable it to night mode The difference you will see when you will be in dark area. Then my question is why not this feature enabled for Nokia N900? |
Re: N900 camera night mode
Just play with the exposure time and ISO sensitivity settings, it's basically the same thing than the "night mode" in mobile phone cameras.

Re: N900 camera night mode
I guess it's just the hunter in me..
I see "night mode" and thought this thread wanted the N900 to have green night vision built-into the camera like scopes do. Sounds like a cool idea to me :D. |
Re: N900 camera night mode
but exposure time and iso sensitivity isn't removing those small-small start like prints on the image(captured in darkness)
Moreover exposure drastically brightens the image if going for very low light ed area |
Re: N900 camera night mode
Yup. What night mode does is that it's just an automated setting that plays with exposure time and ISO. Easy way to put it: longer exposure => more light captured and ISO figure tells how sensitive the sensor is for light.

Re: N900 camera night mode
The exposure time with night mode on S60 phones is something like a second or two ;-)
No way to set exposure time through the camera ui on N900 though |

That's a shame, I found Night Mode quite useful on my N95 8gb |
Re: N900 camera night mode
More to the point...
Why does my wife's £200 Samsung Jet take incredibly better pictures than my £500 N900, especially in dim light, the camera in the Jet is fricking AWESOME, pictures that the N900 can barely focus on (in low light) are crystal clear on the Jet, both without Flash being used!! Whats holding the N900's camera back, hardware or sofware??? Any idea's..?? |

Is the lack of even basic functionality in the camera app logged as a bug yet? |

2. Image quality on my N95 is better than my N900 across a range of scenarios. 3. Other Nokias released closer to the time of the N900 take better photos. The compression algorithms are better and the sensing used to set the appeture, exposure and ISO are better. Regarding missing features from the Camera App: I don't need to explain myself here. |
Re: N900 camera night mode
N95 was 3.5mp wasn't it? The N900 is 5mp.

Re: N900 camera night mode
Those talking about making adjustments through Sensitivity and else..They really forget about the automaticity made by the nigh mode app.
They want each and everything manually, just wanna keep touching screen for even small things. Come on, night mode isn't gonna bring something worth to N900, just will increase the accessing time to use the camera in less lightened areas. |
Re: N900 camera night mode
Starman, sorry it's hardware.
The distance from the lens to the sensor is critical. A good quality lens is very important too, again, camera phones generally suck. The physical size of the sensor is also important and generally small on camera phones & the megapixel count is largely irrelevant due to the small sensors used. |

'Megapixels' on camera phones is a bit of a myth (as we all probably know), but there is still a considerable amount that good quality software can do to aid with image capture. The N900 doesn't (but should) have good camera software, especially as a "flagship" phone and at this price point. |
Re: N900 camera night mode
No to the above post
Reason: As you mentioned N900 doesn't have good camera software, I tell you it has got best software to capture images. If you are a N900 user, you might have noticed that it always show the true colour of the image captured instead editing, illuminating, contrasting to make the picture good looking. Even if you capture any image in dark, it doesn't make the image extra brightened, it just played with the flash and catches the true colour of the subject. The only point that would be rais that It doesn't have night mode, although we know that we can achieve this manually but then where goes the fun of automaticity?? |

As well as missing night mode, it's missing timed photographs, continuous shooting, panoramic photographs, the option for 360 degree photographs and the option to stitch photographs. Anything else? It's pretty low on features for a Flagship phone. Either they're going to add them or they figured that the community would at some point? |
Re: N900 camera night mode
The real problem for the n900 nigh mode is the design of the device, the chrome line of the back cover forces light back in to the camera sensor and blurs the image ... i did some testing on this aspect and i took the chrome line off and now my low-light images have a way better quality now :D kind of ironic don't you think ?
