Can you back up this statement with some info (like fixed bug report against this for example)? :)

Sweet! Now I can drain my battery 10 times faster! W00t!

Now on to serious business. I wish Nokia would have taken the time spent on that bug and used it on per-contact ringtones, IPv6, or something else more useful.

Qt 4.6.2 for Maemo 5 released
Posted by Harald Fernengel
on Monday, February 15, 2010 @ 10:18

So we released Qt 4.6.2 for Maemo 5 - what does that mean concretely? It means that we’re done with the Maemo 5 port. Now, the only device that ships with Maemo 5 is the N900. The current N900 firmware (called PR 1.1) ships with Qt 4.5, and that can’t be easily replaced. Just like every Qt release takes some time to enter upstream Linux distributions, it will take a few weeks of testing and integrating for Qt 4.6 to appear with the next N900 firmware update (called PR 1.2). In the meantime, we provide the usual packages for PR 1.1 in Maemo’s extras-devel.

hmm so that actually means that the PR 1.2 update is going to be a few weeks from now the least. I don't mind that much (although I'd love to get it "yesterday" :P) as long it's going to get the phone to a usable state (not really complaining, but things could be much better for sure).
Anyway, my deepest kudos with the porting! the youtube video looked really awesome! Can't wait to start some Qt4.6-maemo5 programming as soon as possible :D

I am so bored and waiting for the update, that I came up with a song even lol:

Maemo pants, QT dance,
An update is all we need!
Oh what fun it is, right now,
to wait and sit till we bleed!

Searching through the board,
desperate for some news.
Everywhere we look,
rumours all the way.

It is almost spring,
people getting thrilled,
What fun it is to wait and stink,
it's worse then getting killed.

Maemo pants, QT dance,
An update is all we need!
Oh what fun it is, right now,

I am still running the 2.2009.51.1 firmware, any idea of whether I can upgrade from this to the pending PR1.2 directly without putting the PR1.1?

Laughing Man 2010-03-18 17:21

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) and its release date

@cheve, I believe you will need 1.1 to update to PR1.2 over the air.

Or you can reflash your device to 1.2 directly. I'm planning on doing that since my rootfs is getting hammered in space (around 40 MB free) and with the QT 4.6 change I don't know how that's going work since I already have QT 4.6 installed to /opt.

Has there been any official word on why the UK was skipped when the last firmware update got released? I'd rather not have to reflash with the worldwide fw but seems like Nokia have left us brits behind. :( If they do the same for thr PR1.2 update they will have a lot of annoyed customers over here!

i work as a seller of mobile phones and today i had a visit of our represantative of nokia and i asked her if ovi maps was coming to n900 and she said that the chance was really small. their main goal at the moment is releasing a huge new phone with symbian in the n-series. but that was the only thing they got to know. the rest was a big secret.

i hope she is wrong but i'm expecting the worse for ovi maps on n900

My though is that Nokia should be porting Ovi Maps to Qt for use on all their devices so if not on PR1.2, but in a not so distant future, we are going to have a complete Ovi Maps on N900

i just hope they dont wait to long. the device is set for end of life for august or september. the new ovi map agreement is now for phones that are just new. nothing is said for older phones so what with the n900 and when the update wont come before this date

page 58 to 60 of the manual explains how internet-calls work (includes sending video)

also, on page 81 you can see "audio recording" in video-mode. so you can record without sound.

Similarly to what happened to Maemo5, Meego probably is not going to be on par with Maemo 5 feature wise until next year so I wouldn't kill Maemo 5 so early.

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) and its release date

I posted about this in another forum and here's the summary of currently noticed changes from the manual in this thread.

- It will support internet video calls. Straight from contacts.
- Night Photo and Night Video modes.
- Video recording resolution support.
- Mail widget
- Official support of portrait mode in web browser.
- Native Geolocations support for web browser.
- Volume button can be set to either volume or zoom for browser.
- Themes for Smileys and Conversations.
- MfE support enhancements. (Can accept/decline meeting requests)
- SMS option only shows for mobile phone numbers. (not for landlines)
- File Manager allows sharing of any files. (no more need for Petrovich)
- Clear device data and restore settings option. (possibly full factory default)
- Group chat possible in Instant Messaging
- Search by typing for applications in App Launcher.
- Sticky tags for videos and photos.
- Away status for status of Contacts (page 52)
- Can disable Show Captured Video after finishing recording. (page 82)
- Media player now supports MAFW Plug-ins. (page 91)

A Nokia employee did mention at the Ovi maps blog that they were working on it. But it could well be they are holding it back to give Sygic a chance to sell some of their software, after the Ovi store problem. Pure speculation, but if I were Sygic I would insist on that, and if I were Nokia (and the Ovi Store deal with Sygic was indeed the reason for the delay) I would give it to them.

N900 is said to be released in early April in Australia.
It's already appearing in major retailer's websites.
My speculation is that PR1.2 is already finalized / ready.
And new release batches will be on PR1.2 out of the box.
If so, PR1.2 should be available by end of the month. :D
