$3.99 for a .deb To Turn Fremantle Green or Have we finally arrived?

So, browsing Planet this morning I stumbled on a real gem: a company called MMMOOO has released a new—paid!—theme for Fremantle.

The kicker? The theme is distributed as a .deb and the installation process walks you through using dpkg in XTerm to install it! Genius.

So, have we arrived or what?

When I click on ''released'' I get:

Quote:

Error
# Parameter error
IMMMOOO.com
And I wonder how long it'll take untill the deb gets spread :p

Those last two link don't appear to be valid anymore.

How to install the .deb format theme?
1. Download the .deb on your pc and transfer it N900's root folder
2. In the X Terminal run: sudo gainroot
3. then run: dpkg -i MyDocs/xxx.deb
4. go to Settings-Themes choose the installed theme

Caution: the commands is capital sensitive in Maemo os, so plz not type MyDocs into mydocs as so on.

"walks you through"? ;)

Its this kind of thing thats going to kill paid apps etc on the N900. If you can afford a $500+ phone, then pay 4 bucks etc for an app and support future content. If you arent willing to do that, then may I politely suggest you do something unpleasant to yourself.

If you are talking about the green theme found on their store, it seems like the default one which is included with Theme Maker application which is found on garage.

Therefore, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Also, the price seems to be 4.99$ :p

I am reporting this to kontorri.

I read this thread and I almost get a feeling that someone here feels you should only pay for a package if it is DRM protected and you can't get around it. That's like rewarding DRM. :p

On behalf of everyone here, I will put in that this feeling is of course totally unfounded. Noone here would ever install a .deb and skip following it's publishers requests for payment. :P If you install this and do not pay for it, it is not open source, it is piracy. Linux isn't about piracy, is it? ;) Don't use a package unless you can agree with the license.

That aside, I think for someone to ask payment for something, it had better be their creative work and not copied from a tutorial, especially not in breach with that tutorials license. :B

we are talking about a 4 bucks app, but what about the most expected sygic maps? i would probably pay for them if they are any good. but i dont think they will be drm-free, anyway. what do you think. i think this is actually a big problem, possibly preventing many from realising, i mean selling, new good apps.
