Re: Apple iPad

I haven't read all the pages so far. I'm on Page 2, but here is what I said to my Apple fan brother:

"I am looking at the iPad and I just don't get it. It's an oversized iPhone. What use is it if you have an iPhone or a laptop? It's not really convenient on your lap as there's nothing supporting it. As an eBook reader, it's way overpriced, better off reading books on your phone one handed. And price is $500 for the 16gb model with no connectivity options for external hard drives etc. $130 extra to have 3G capability and $30 a month for the unlimited internet subscription. I just don't get it."

Added to that lack of multi-tasking... fine on their phone but for a computer? Most people want to be able to use something like Spotify and check emails at the same time, or do some work on a spreadsheet and so on. Can you open multiple web pages/tabs on there?

Thanks for that article. I agree with this -- it's quite a recipe:

- Its proprietary hardware and software strengthen its DRM; media creators want strong DRM, which will attract them to Apple.

- Its tightly controlled hardware platform is optimized to provide the best customer experience for text, video, music, etc.

- It’s iTunes store allows doe easy distribution of media.

- It has a built-in e-commerce system for collecting money from customers.

Through its proprietary systems, Apple can provide a high quality experience to users, and provide media and apps creators with a highly efficient commerce platform.

The thing is that very few (any?) phones in my experience have ever played the ringtone out of the speakers when headphones are connected, but that is now - bizarrely - what the N900 does and I'm sure it caters to a few corner cases - your corner case - but the reality is that most people will have the headphones in their ears when the call comes in. You quickly learned that when you were no longer listening on the headphones you disconnected the headphones from the socket...

I'm with Alan on this one. I keep my headphones wrapped around my N900 and plugged in. I want it to play the ringtone out of the speakers regardless. And anyway - what's the problem with the ringtone coming out the speakers when you have headphones in? I can't see why it matters to you but I can see why it matters to Alan and me.

Oh - and I just don't get the iPad either - makes no sense to me.

funny thing, i would love to see a android or maemo device with a case like what the ipad will have available, as that angle makes onscreen keyboards really touch friendly.

I might just buy a iPad if no other company provides something similar.

Without a stylus, how can you scribble notes down quickly? I think a notepad would be much better for that... and cheaper to boot.

My take: I'm glad Apple has put their iPad out there, and I sincerely hope that the Apple fans get excited about it. I don't think I'd ever buy one, but I might buy some other sort of tablet pc, and with a big company like Apple doing it, others are going to follow - I'm looking forward to the diversity.

I agree, it is the recipe of the iPhone/iTouch, but for a different form factor. That is probably the reason why the pad is just an oversized Touch, and also the reason of the lack of features. I bet that a USB accessory through a dock is way more controllable than an integrated USB in the mainboard.

And to a significant extent, a DRM structure like apple has implemented decrease the amount of piracy - when the correct elements are put in place: agreeable price points and convenient access.

I'm not talking specifically about DRM files. But a DRM-supported infrastructure of store-payment system-delivery system.

I like the basic idea of the system, that is, content creator goes to Apple, Apple goes to the consumer, all in a nice, consumer friendly way; with good prices and little "overhead". What I don't like is the control that Apple routinely exerts over the system. I like quality content as much as anyone else, but I also like options.

No cam... so what?
I have "cam" on n810 and what can I do with it?
In fact NOTHING - please don't let me hear word GIZMO.

Maybe I'm just getting older but I'm quite fed up with browsing on tiny screens with high resolution that in fact doesn't help much.
Bigger screen = no need for scrolling so less speed vs comfort trade off.
