I've been very happy with the quality of the screen protectors, and there doing there job dam well!

No scratches on the n900 screen yet! and no real loss of response either,

I'm also use those 5 for US$3 protectors from ebay (shipped from Hong Kong), they work great on my 5800 and N900

I have had the phone from the end of november without screen protector. So far no scratches! I kind of like the phone how its ment to be. :)

I have had two N900's and used both without screen protector. I used the first one over four months and didn't have any troubles. One tiny scratch which game from my keys. It was so small that it was almost invisible. I have used the he other one about one month and no troubles.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I had significant problems with the Virtuli 160-somehthing (name?), it was lifting off at the edges badly. But the folks at the shop asked me to send a pic of it, and as soon as I did, they said, "Oh, that's bad", and they sent me a replacement ASAP at no charge.

So I'm using it now and it feels great, is totally invisible. I hate looking at scratches so ai feel a ton better with it on. I was super careful in the few weeks before the protector arrived, using stylus only and very gently.

I also tried the Clairvue, but overpriced I think, it seems it's the exact same item that you can get from HK merchants, only at 25% of the price.

The Clairvue felt very glassy, BTW, even harder and more slippery/slick than the N900's original screen. I did like the feel of the N900's bare screen itself, but perhaps it was a bit too slippery too. The Virtuli adds just the tiniest bit of drag, which I prefer.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

At the end i couldnt be strong and hold my N900 without a screen protector. why? because i got like 6 small hairline scratches from God knows where.

I do baby my phone and try the hardest to keep it looking nice and like new but is impossible. seriously N900 has the worst anti scratch screen ever.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I've had my screen protector on from the day i opened the box, bought these cheap protectors on ebay for few bucks, perfect fit, easy to install. I really cant see a reason why not to use one, if the protector gets bad scratches on it like i already have, u can just replace it. and if i ever get tired for my n900 or its time to get new phone i get better price for it :D But who am i to judge anyone, everyone chooses your own path

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

No proctector, no case, no scratches or damage so far.

i don't really understand the point of cases or protectors unless you plan to sell at a later date (which I don't). You have a beautiful piece of technology, and in order to prevent it getting damaged and looking slightly less beautiful you cover it in crap and make it look like **** anyway.

It's a bit like pouring acid on your face so you don't get any uglier as you get older....

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I used screen protectors with just about all the Palm devices that I used. They would soon get scratched and dirty, but I had the comfort of knowing that, beneath that rough exterior, the screen was pristine. Invariably, all my dead Palm devices died with a beautiful pristine screen *that I never really got to enjoy*. I say, forget screen protectors. Enjoy your device's screen while it is alive. I do take care of my screen though. I wipe it regularly with a good eye glasses cloth. I have had it a little over a month and it still looks like new. If I do get a scratch on it eventually, I am not going to cry about it. This device is going to die eventually any way. And no, I don't think I will sell mine either. I plan to use it until it dies. Hopefully by then Maemo 7 will be out. ;)

I urge you all please please use screen protectors. If I showed you a picture of my screen you would obey. Nasty!!! And I was very careful not to put anything in the same pocket as I was keeping my N900. Don't wait till it is too late like I did before getting a screen protector.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

Bought my n900 when it was first released here in UK and only just bought a pack of screen protectors (7 for about £3 from eBay) about a week ago. Generally careful with it, but still got 1 or two tiny scratches on the screen.

Screen protector is ok - does spoil the look a little, and I may or may not be imagining a slight loss of responsiveness, but on the whole well worth the money - should stop any future and more serious scratches.

Just for comparison, my Palm Tungsten T3 which I've had for a fair few years now has a fairly badly scratched screen (mostly around the Graffiti area), and I've been equally careful with it. It's just general wear and tear. Much better to wear out a screen protector than a screen! And no, it's not just cosmetic - the T3 screen is definitely less responsive in the more scuffed areas.

im not using protection, i have the device since the 4 december. only some very light scratches, noticeable when the display is off and put in front of strong light. from the scratches positions im pretty sure they are caused by my girlfriend fingernails when playing angrybirds. she will surely hear me when i'll meet her this eve.

I've had my N900 for exactly 2 months. No noticeable scratches. If you're careful and take care who touches it then no problem.

It's a touch screen so it's supposed to be touched directly. I could draw an analogy with condoms and sex but I won't :D

Have been using for about a month without protector.
No scratches.
Maybe I have more grease hand than everybody else, but can't get to wipe the screen clean. :( I wipe it with the cloth that came with the N900, but even then there's some residue in form of lines in the direction it was wiped, which is visible under sunlight.

You big greasy man!

No, I have that problem as well -I ended up using screen cleaner to clean my screen before applying my screen protector.

Sorry to bring it up but the iPhone has an anti-grease coating on the glass. Shame Nokia didn't copy that...

A new one does - from all accounts, this doesn't last that long though. It may well not be possible to use it on a plastic screen as well.

I was having that problem too. I finally gave up on using my fingers and just use the stylus all the time. The screen stays nice and clean now. :)

Utter nonsense. A device's usefulness is determined by its owner. I have an N75 that's about 3 years old that stil gets used on occasion. Oh, and same for the N800s my kids still use.

And yes, it's time to buy my N900 some screen protection...

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I sometimes wonder if screen protectors can actually have a detrimental effect on the screen due to having to use more pressure. The screen is calibrated for use as is. Logically, adding another layer spreads the pressure point to some degree and requires a bit more pressure to achieve the same result. Granted, this difference can be very small and it is probably negligible. But, I sometimes wonder...

I had my N900 proto for a few months and never used a screen protector. I just used common sense with what pocket I was putting it in with... no keys or anything stupid like that. I only had two tiny scratches in the bezel, not even the screen itself.

Superoleophobic (grease-repelling) coatings are a recent development and not very mechanically robust. Actually, that's a problem with all kinds of fancy optics coatings: they work great until you actually start using the device and it gets rubbed/dirty. Whole research groups are focused on this seemingly tiny niche, because it's a hard problem to solve. For example, there is still no such thing as an effective robust and enduring antifog coating, in spite of the obviously mission-critical nature of such a thing for e.g. military operations.</boring_science_lecture_mode>

I use a screen protector on my N900 because i don't have time to spend worrying about what else may be in my pocket or hand(s) when i'm using it. I have a cheap case on it for the same reason.

What i can't understand, though, is spending $40+ on the case and screen protector. If an insurance police becomes a significant fraction of the cost of the insured, it's rather pointless.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

no screen protector, no pouches. And even when I run with n900 in my pocket, some part of the extra headphone cable is wrapped around n900, all the time touching and rubbing against the screen. About 2 months, screen is clean as it was when it came new.

I always use a screen protector (since my early Palm pda days). Any scratches will really annoy me. At least I can peel of aprotector and everything is restored.

My concern comes from my own experience. My oldest son has a very bad habit of accidentally knocking my devices from my hand with occasional wild, random movements. My N810 flew across the driveway after one such incident and took some significant damage... most of which I straightened out. I also dropped my N71x and scratched its screen-- so I don't want to take chances with the N900.

Texrat - it sounds like you need a full cover for the phone more than a screen protector.

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I have a zagg but hate the feel of it with a stylus. I actually prefer the cover on the rear as it does give better grip than without it and I've chucked phones down steps before taking the slippy buggers out of my pocket.

Dont generally use any screen protectors but you lot have made me paranoid lol!.

I do have a wrist strap tho, to save the chucking across the drive episodes lol

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

bonerp - I've never used a screen protector before but got worried after reading threads around here before my N900 arrived.

I've got the Vikuiti ARMR200 and I actually prefer the feel with the stylus. Without, I found the screen to be too sticky. Now it's smoother and more 'papery'

bonerp 2010-02-04 18:14

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

no i haven't either. Makes the screen to dark.

Might have a look at that one then cheers. the zagg is far too grippy and makes accurate use difficult.

I bought a bunch of HiTech blah blah blah screen protectors..it comes with 2 different brand. Try it on and it creates too much bubbling...try again with another piece...being careful and still create bubbling...try other brand...nope too ugly...throw away...go back to other brand...and being extra careful...still bubbling...finally concluded that this is a waste of time and money and throw them all in the trash!!! Seriously, why is it sooo hard to smooth it out without the bubbling?? I am being careful inch by inch and IT STILL CREATE BUBBLING.

I don't really need the protector anyway....just want to try on.

padded cell and specially tailored jacket (with nice long wrap around arms to feel snug!) should keep us safe from harm :D

As I said, I don't use screen protectors any more. But, from years of experience using them, apply the protector as carefully as you can. I used to use a credit card to slowly push it in with the least amount of bubbles possible. There will invariably some small bubbles left over. Let it be for about a day and they go away as the protector settles in. ;)

Re: Anybody else is using the N900 without screen protector?

I looked at all the screen protectors available but couldn't decide which one to get. I ended up not get any of them. Have been without a screen protector for about 3 months now. No scratches. I am very mindful of when i put it on tables to make sure it is touch screen up, and i also make sure when i put it my pocket that it doesnt go in the same pocket with keys and loose change. I regularly use my fingernails and the stylus on the screen with no issue.

I havent had a screen protector either. have had the phone almost a month.

my wife came up and put some change in my pocket. I got one of those scratches that you can see if you put it in direct sunlight and are looking for it.

I also am having too tough of a time deciding which protector to buy, so I'm going o go without one for a while I think. so far so good. just the wife. hahaha ;)

Has any of you seen the Ghost Armor kit for the N900? I installed it on mine and am really happy about it. It's a screen protector and/or overall phone protector. The installation is done by a professional and they guarantee your satisfaction or they will give you your money back.

Since I did the whole body installation, it gives the phone a glossy look which is kind of nice, and the feeling on the screen is very responsive.

See for yourselves. $20 for the screen and $35 for the whole body kit.
