Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

@Rushmore

That's quite a good spec netbook though, but average spec pc's and webbooks, netbooks there are issues. And the n900 comes under that bracket, That's why i thought it maybe worth trying an older version to test performances.

@Flandry

Thanks for considering it. ;)

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

im a noob here, cant make mame work
I have installed mame not sdlmame. i gettin red error, No games found and check ini file config.text. Well i couldnt find those files ..

I did google for info, Is this new version reads MyDocs, roms from sd card only ?
is it true the only way ito make a rom works is to zip it with the appropriate bios? or can just the bios be zip or unzip in the roms folder ?

Bazza 2010-11-17 12:20

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

Did you get mame through app manager and which version have you got?

Also your roms folder should be in MyDocs (not in sd card) folder and each rom should be a zip file.

warren 2010-11-17 20:14

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

yes i got it from app manager i first installed sdlmame, uninstall and install only mame... i download it yesterday, so i think its the last version available.
i tried both, Mydocs in phone and sdcard and nothing.
And yes i have my roms zip .
i also have a list of bios zip and unzip.

Edit
Bazza
this is the where i found about putting the mydocs, roms in sd card.

bueno, lo que pasa es que este emulador no lee, los roms en la memoria del movil, hay que mover la carpeta roms a la tarjeta de memoria.

Is not letting me printscn the error flag
no , what i get is a big reg square, saying no games found.please check the rompath specified in the name.ini file
if this is your first time using mame, please see the config.txt file in the docs directory for information on cofiguring MAME

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

It sounds as though you may have a conflict with the sdl mame install.

i would uninstall mame.

create a roms folder in MyDocs and put roms in there.

re-install mame and try it.

Let me know how you get on.

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

And what about bios ?

Just get mame.

and don't worry about the bios for now, you add the bios to certain game zips to make them work most roms will work without the bios.

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

Now...how can i see in the list games split in 2 or 3 rars ?
i have simsons.rar it says im missing a file.. so how should i name the second file to make it work. i used different combinations and i cannot make it work.
simsonsa. / simsonsb. = not shown in the list
simsons. / simsonsa or simsonsb = only shows simsons. in the list and it still says file missing.
I even zipped both files into 1 whole file and doesnt work

help please

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

You put it in user/roms and it worked !!!!!!!

mine is in MyDocs/roms and works fine although my roms folder is lower case, anyway u can try lower case roms folder in MyDocs later.

Now missing files could mean 2 things,

1.You may need to insert a bios to work

or

2. You have got hold of the incorrect romset

In Simpsons case no bios is needed u need the correct romset.

Google the correct romset for the correct version of Mame and all should be ok.

When i get home i will check my PC version of Mame 0138u1 and let you know which Simpsons romset you need.

To test romsets use your PC version (0138U1) it is the same as the N900 version and much more convenient to use then if all ok transfer roms to N900 and enjoy.

weird isnit ?it worked under user/roms .. dont know what happened
cause with psx the bios has to be in MyDocs , i had it like that, but i take it out to user, and is still working...
Simsons need 2 files 1 is like 2 mb and the other 1 like 200KB.
I have a dvd backup with all my working games and emulators.
So therefore i know i have the complete rom set.

ok let me know, cause theres a few it gives me the same error, like moonwalker, Good old retro games jaja

For simpsons to work i use:-

simpsons - 2,427kb

simpsons4pa - 121kb

Enjoy

oh and moonwalker

mwalk - 1,897kb

those are the simpsons files i have, and they dont work ..
look i was doing some testing, it was hard to get the pc mame version Mameplus 0.138u1. and i took out my old mame version 0.91
On 0.138u1 says im missing a file named (simpsons.nv) . It doesn even have a folder named nvram. Well i found the file and still not working....
On my old version plus 0.91 with only simpsons - 2,427kb and simpsons4pa - 121kb works flawlessly ....

so i cannot run it in my pc not even in my n900 with the new version:(

warren 2010-11-18 21:29

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

update.
after several tests and not giving up. i added .nv file to simsons file and it works on moonwalker, checking the zip files inside. last file had extension .bin that extension was wrong. i changed it to ic4

working now... at last

Have you got Mame 0138u1 on your PC?

If not go to the official mame website and look at previous releases you can get it from there.(pc version)

also why are you looking for mameplus?

i google it and mame plus was the only 0138u1 version i found. i went to mame website and i only found 138 . i download it. but it didnt have any install inside. so i delete it.

do you have your phone overclock? mine is not and the game runs slow the music breaks down.

gracias

Bazza 2010-11-19 12:05

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

No my phone is not overclocked and simpsons and moonwalker are running between 50 - 70% speed with sound issues.

Mame 0138u1 unpacked is only 38.3 MB you need to download the binary file and the reason i am going on about the PC version is that it is easier to test roms on, with compatibility the same as the N900 version it saves a lot of time, obviously the performance is different.

On a side note

I have asked Flandry (the porter of mame for N900) kindly if he can port an older version of mame to see if performance is better on the roms that struggle to work on the latest port.

So maybe in the future we may have an older version to use for better performance on the classics (simpsons, moonwalker, nemesis, r-type etc) which we can run along side the latest version.

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

thats a great request man, I have notice that most of my old back up games dont work in this new version, but in my old version 0.91 they work excellent ..
That could be a solution
Good old retro games
art of fighting,world heroes,cadash..

jflatt 2010-11-19 19:05

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

Thats a bad request. Your old games are wrong and were likely redumped from the original roms. Enhancements are made frequently to MAME upstream, especially in the build system and unification of the SDL code

warren 2010-11-19 19:10

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

thats why old dumped games dont work in the new version, where do i find new dumped roms on the net. sites usually dont refresh their roms

I have a gp2x wiz with mame4all 2.5 (build 0.37b5) running at 533 mhz (before overclocking) and simpsons works fine and nemesis works fine for example.

results from gp2x wiz at 533mhz

simpsons on auto frame skip 93-97% good sound

nemesis on auto frame skip 99-100% sound perfect

moonwalker on auto frame skip 99-100% sound good slightly slows in places

click on the link befow and read from post #158 it should explain my findings and info i have read about mame latest builds.

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...557#post840557

Having an older version to test even if it is from x-terminal will give us an idea and we can move on from there.

jflatt 2010-11-22 16:40

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

That version of MAME looks like it's from 2001. I'm sure you can find some games that ran faster from back then, as the MAME team has constantly improved the accuracy in the emulation. On the other hand, there are years worth of improvements and additional platforms supported.

FP125 2010-11-22 17:04

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

Is there a big difference in performance on SDLMAME and MAME?

I have been running the SDL version and seems ok - should I change?

Bazza 2010-11-22 17:05

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

@jflatt

That's right build 0.37b5 probably is, the guy's who ported it franxis and notaz went for quality of emulation than quantity.

if he went for a more up to date version most of the roms would suffer due to later mame builds not liking low powered cpu's and later roms are ram hungry. whereas older builds are more compatible with low power cpu's but are limited to play roms ok up to a certain year pre - 2000 i think.

Yep change,

Mame is alot better with performance and it runs along side the mainstream PC releases. we only have version 0138 available at the moment but it should do for now, later versions that have since come out have small changes in them.

I think that's the opposite. Ages old versions provided quantity, as in frames rendered per second, as opposed to quality of emulation in regards to accuracy

Bazza 2010-11-22 19:35

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

No no no

you have misread what i said the author of mame4all on the wiz (franxis) ported an older version because he went for quality emulation (due to limited cpu on the wiz) than go for a newer version with more roms available but in which has issues with machines with low cpu's .i didn't mean quality as in graphics or fps i meant how they ran speed wise and with less issues., but from what i have read and used old versions run better with older roms than the newer versions with the same games on a low cpu machine ie wiz, basic netbook etc etc

sbock 2010-11-23 13:32

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

Hey, Bazza! Full ACK to your statement. But MAME4all for the GP2x/Wiz is maintained by Franxis and not notaz. Of course notaz is responsible for a lot performance tweaks used by MAME4all like the Cyclone 68000 ARM core and the MMU hack.

Here's an interesting article from Aaron Giles, one of the major MAME gurus:

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

new version? or mame 0.138 will the latest version.

run slow and with overclock n900 950mhz , any games in cps2 emulator alien vs predator run perfect but this game in mame run 90-95% with n900 1150mhz all games will run well i think ,

but newer version with more speed will be well.

Bazza 2010-12-07 01:14

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

New versions may not bring more speed, overclocking should improve speed slightly.

Cps2's software is dedicated to these types of roms so you will get better performances from it.

Flandry did say a few posts back that he will take a look at mame when he gets chance so i would watch this space.;)

ok , thanks bazza , newests versions will have more compatibility ok.

it is the idea ok, i see it. jaj , thanks

i played with 2 ps3 gamepad in mame without problem in nokia n900 1150mhz , but in my n900 only i only can get 950mhz jaja my n900 cpu is amd and n900 friend mobile are cpu intel jaja

guys i am having an issue. i wanna play cadillac and dinosoures. i downloaded rom and put the dino.zip into the rom folder on n900. now when i start mame and try to run the game i always get an error says "The selected game is missing on or more required rom or CHD images. Please select a different game". i searched the issue and got something like unzip the rom file and zip again into the rom folder with the original file name. but either i am missing something or i didn't understand cause doing that didn't help me. so pls can any1 tell me how to get rid of this problem. thanks

Bazza 2010-12-19 11:48

Re: [Maemo 5] MAME [WIP] (Formerly SDLMAME)

@odhishap

Use

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (World) 4,019kb

Works fine for me 87% speed on auto frame skip well apart from stuttering sound.
