Maemo Weekly News: 1st Feburary 2010

First edition of Maemo Weekly News

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of Maemo Weekly News. This, as the name suggests, is a new weekly digest of news and announcements from in and around the Maemo community. Our team of intrepid contributors are deeply embedded within all facets of the Maemo and 770, N800, N810 and N900 community; whether that's on IRC, talk.maemo.org, maemo.org Downloads, blogs, Twitter or the mailing lists. They read and process all the info, so you don't have to!

As this is the first issue, things are still bedding in - features such as the top downloads for the week, the newest downloads and the top bugs are still under development. Also, we're still looking for contributors; so if you feel like you stumble across Maemo items which are well hidden, and of interest to others, please hit "Read more" link to get involved. The key thing to all of us is that this adds lots of value, without taking up lots of our time. If laziness, hubris and a desire to help others are qualities you recognise in yourself, get in touch!

Firefox mobile released for Maemo 5

The news has been everywhere, but Mozilla's mobile Firefox (Fennec) has now been released for the N900. Using basically the same engine as the built-in browser, Firefox Mobile brings an interesting new take on the mobile browser user interface; can synchronise with your desktop Firefox and embraces the concepts of add-ons in the same way it's big brother does:
Quote:

Bringing Firefox to mobile devices is the next step toward fulfilling Mozilla's mission of providing one Web that everyone can access, regardless of device or location. Secure, powerful, and customizable, Firefox is the most modern mobile Web browser available and is optimized for a mobile experience. Key design principles are at the heart of the mobile browsing experience including minimal typing, seamless synchronization with desktop Firefox and the ability to take your Firefox with you, to name a few.
It will be interesting to see whether it gets the user takeup that Firefox has had, given it's competing against its own cousin and every review lists the out-of-the-box browser as the best feature of the N900.

More like two hours my dear Quim. You're up way too early either way.

Ah, I see now that the launch is at 6am UTC. The website counter was telling me that it was 1 minute left for 6am in my local time. Anyway, just launch details.

Looking forward to the real flesh. :) Time for me to reach the office.

Well, that was a useless countdown then! Sorry for the inconvenience :-(

Excellent work Jaffa and Reggie, thanks a lot to all the contributors to find the links and provide us with a good insight of what's happening.

Everyone, please note that this issue was created nearly manually. The feeds and links were provided through twitter, and then Jaffa and Reggie have been fleshing out the contents of the newsletter through editing a simple text file! So big round of applause to them!

We're still working hard to try and get an automated system running, so that editors, sub-editors and contributors have a much easier time putting an issue together. Stay tuned for future updates!

That's really excellent! Very, very impressive.

Huge round of applause to the people involved, and thankyou. A good step for Maemo.org. :)

MWKN is a great addition to follow what's happening and saves on time spent following threads in the talk forum. I really like the choice of headings, too!

Great, bookmarked it. I get a huge space at the top part of reading pane in IE6 for the mwkn website. Is it an browser issue?

Yes. Although I did a quick check in IE, it may have been IE7. You should upgrade from IE6 as it's a legacy browser with little to no support of web standards.

Please upgrade to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8; if possible.

I guess that means I can't read it at work. Cornwall NHS sticks doggedly to IE6. :(

Shoot of a request to IT. Last time I was there Firefox was only a phone call away.

You can presumably still read it, it just won't look great. However, some useful links to pass on to your IT department:

I hot desk all over the place, sadly, so I use at least half a dozen different computers. And these days we even have patients having computer access.. you can guess how chuffed they are that their websites won't display properly (not to mention that they're blocked from all social networking sites!)

I'm not ITs favourite person anyway: by the time I go to them I have a problem I couldn't solve, which usually means they can't either. :p

It's a great start, though I have to say that having "...." under each heading gives the distinct impression that only those main things listed are in the news and that there are no other items, especially since the "..." isn't linked anywhere.

Can't wait to see the next one.

I thought an ellipsis was fine; would it be better to have something like "[i]+ 4 more"?

Another suggestion which was received was making the article titles links either instead of, or as well as, the "Read more" links. Thoughts?

Yeah the "+ 4 more" would be perfect.

Re: Maemo Weekly News: 1st Feburary 2010

There's still lots of opportunity for people to get involved. If you can spare some time to post interesting links to Twitter as your browse around the Maemo world, you can become a contributor. If you'd like to flesh out the links with a bit of info (as you can see in this issue), a sub-editorship could be right up your alley.

More information on getting involved can be seen here:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Weekly_News#Implementation

If you'd like to be a contributor, you can start directing your tweets at the @mwkn account. They won't be picked up automatically, but if you post 3 good links over the course of a week, I'll make mwkn follow you, and you'll become an official contributor.

If anybody has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Really great to have MWKN. I know it is brand new but FWIW:

microB

FireFox
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_587Wk-3x3vI/S2...irefox.png.jpg

Midori
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_587Wk-3x3vI/S2...Midori.png.jpg

I didn't notice if this was mentioned previously. Is anyone else seeing this format issue in microB?

Only other thing I would say needs fixing is that the site needs an RSS feed. :)
