N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
No. Not a 800 pixel wide display.
But I'd *love* a case like this for my N800. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
I am gonna have to make a case like this - add the n800, a mini bluetooth keyboard and some leather together...
Opinion on the Athena - Windows Mobile or whatever they call it today stinks. I do not like the interface at all. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
Nice, but this thread's in the wrong topic. There's a Competitors section for this sort of thing. Thanks.

Sorry - Admin - please shift - thanks :)

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
Love the keyboard+case+protector idea (maybe something Nokia can use on the N900?) :)
Dont Care for the built-in phone functionality - adds weight, complexity and cost when I'd rather provide my own phone that I can upgrade seperately when necessary. Don't Like the sub-par CPU (it's getting a bit long in the tooth) and hard disk drive (adds weight and sucks down battery lifetime). Hate the screen resolution and of course, Windows CE. Summary: Not a N800 competitor due to the small screen - 640x480 delivers a horrible Internet experience. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
But one advantage has the HTC Athena
it has many and also executable applications Quote:

More applications for the N800? The community is working on them, you know. All they need from the users is feedback and a bit of patience. Commercial applications for the N800? Well, you're scr*wed there, mate. You can feedback all you want and be patient 'til kingdome come, commercial entities do what they want, not what you want them to do. Asking doesn't help either; I should know, because I've done my fair share of asking (I've asked PhatWare to port Calligrapher, Softmaker for Softmaker Office) and they just say, "No". So it seems you can choose: Buy the superior product (N800) and "jones" for software a bit, or by the Windows cr*p and enjoy the fact that you've joined the mediocrity. (Please note that I didn't say that you should develop your own applications. I can't do that myself and frankly, I find that a bogus and offending argument) |

1) Quality assurance and consolidated online download (applications) 2) focus up of the 10 ? most important applications for the N800 user - less is more 3) focus up (google docs, spreadsheets, PIM )- online and offline application 4) Newest Browser Version - up-to-date and not an old version 5) Newest Flash Version - up-to-date and not an old version 6) Bluetooth Mouse support 7) User comfort - no Linux only for Freaks - keep it simple (look iphone) I pay also gladly for good software :) |

My advice to you (in all amicability): Go buy something else; you'll never be happy with the way the NXXX series is managed. ____ [*] Incidentally, one of the principles of Open Source is: "Release early, release often". It appears Nokia is applying that principle to the NXXX hardware as well. Maybe that's partially also why they can keep the price down: Use early adopters as beta-testers. For the record: I'm cool with that, as long as the benefits of that go back to the NXXX community, which sofar they most certainly have. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
Thanks Fidibus. IMHO, this is the first posting of a true competitor to the N800.
For all of you who say it isn't a competitor because it isn't open source, the display is lower resolution, etc., you are confusing disadvantages and shortcomings with competition. A competitive device is a device that would be bought by people instead of the N800 for whatever reason. If the Nxxx is going to succeed and more are sold, you have understand the purchasing decisions that are made and why the Nxxx is losing on sales. |

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
It's a device for the walkaround web all right -- but with a built-in disk drive, keyboard, 2 MB camera AND GPS, it would seem to be an OQO competitor not an Internet Tablet competitor.
Estimated price -- $1500-$2000*. I don't imagine we'll see remarks like these in reviews either: "[buyers] might pick a less expensive UMPC." There aren't that many devices that will be more expensive than UMPC's apparently. ---- Added later: From the mobile-review.com page linked above: "Keeping in mind standard pricing policy applied by HTC, high prime cost and development costs, the price for HTC X7500 is likely to revolve around the level of 1500-2000 USD on release." |

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
Estimated price -- $1500-$2000.
mobileburn.com is reporting the cost to be 499 euro + 2year contract on t-mobile germany. So, for ~100euro more you get a full access to data and phone services, plus a keyboard. But you give up screen real estate. I realize the target audiences are different, but it is a compelling price point for the device. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
I agree that 499 euros puts this in the same niche as the Nokia Internet Tablets.
But which is it? $1500+ is not even close to that figure. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
Looks like the Samsung Nexio
http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/335/C1757/ At least that had an 800x480 screen. |

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
I would get a keyboard like that, but the price is just too outrageous. Maybe $30.

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
There are users on gmane.comp.handhelds.maemo.users who have used the Frogpad with Internet Tablets and stated the Frogpads are very usable.

Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
But they appear to be pretty thick. Not really suited to rigging up a Sidekick-style arrangement, from what I can see.
If I'm going to carry something heavier, I'll go a full folding keyboard. I'm looking for something for walk-around gaim, that sort of thing. I would love to be able to use this thing the way folks with a Sidekick casually chat on IM for hours. You know, without sitting down and unfolding something. |
Re: N800 Competitive - HCT Athena ???
I was envisaging replacing the existing plate with one with a groove or indentation where the current magnet is, so that when you put the new cover on, its magnet falls right where the current one is.
Once I put a card in the internal slot, I don't intend to remove it often (it will probably be an 8GB, so "at all" is very likely), so I could live with having to manually unmount it if I did. |
