ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

I'm sorry. I had to. Shame on me!
We should rate high the video, digg it, whatever - see if anyone takes it seriously. :D

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

What's up with that? Is it just a WinCE computer shoe-horned into the 770 shell? Or is this really running Windows?

Worse, Michael. Far worse. :D

looks to me like a full screen VNC remote thing.....
...what with the refresh delay and all...

VERY SEDITIOUS, sir.

Not VNC either! I promise!

rdesktop, right?

cmon, is anyone supposed to believe that this is not rdesktop. I can show the same exact video with no sound. Why don't you post this thing booting up and logging in, now that might be impressive.

Wine?

Or some other emulator? (Hm-m, what do I mean by that? What other emulator do I know of?)

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Busted! That's why it's on the 770 and not the N800. I had to flash this thing all the way back to OS2005 to get RDesktop to work. Can we get a Hildonized RDP client with RDP5 support for OS2007 please? ;)

Texrat 2007-01-25 19:01

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Ooo, I would love to see RDP on OS2006 and/or 2007. I could really use that.

Now that the cat's out of the bag on this one, I un-moderated the comments and turned moderation back off. If you want to keep playing along, make sure to "rate up" the video on YouTube so it gets more exposure and see if others buy into it. Also, click "more" on the "tags" field on the YouTube page and look at the last tag. :D

The properly scaled screen was the first tip off... that and the XP accessibility keyboard. First thing I do in an XP install is turn off the Fisher-Price(tm) plastic theme. :)

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Yay thanks srstein. I don't add DiggIt or del.icio.us code to my blog posts because I figure any user who finds it worthy enough would digg/del.icio.us it themselves. In all honesty, there are VERY few articles of mine I'd consider worthy for "mass consumption" as most of my writing has the target audience of people who either already have N800's or want to know what the device does. Is that something I should add?

I'm always up for suggestions: As announced the other day, I switched from short feeds to full content feeds in RSS simply because a few people asked me to.

Generally, I consider those links to be cheating a bit however it does make it easier and more likely for the posts to get submitted and read.

As far as adding them to your site it depends. If you decide to post more "mass consumption" articles on your blog then it may be fine. I bet the "Windows XP on 770" will catch a few eyes.

A few other posts could be interesting to the masses such as your n800 review, adding the n800 as an in-car media player, or if you ever get the VEX robot running. I'm sure there's more to come.

I've heard enough of the iPhone already, can we hear some more about the IT? :D

well, rdesktop: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/rdesktop/
auto-install: https://garage.maemo.org/docman/view...esktop.install

not hildonized, but going back and forth using the home key works.

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Thank you SOO much for this port! This is the first port of RDESKTOP to the Nokia Internet Tablets which is even marginally useful. I can report that it seems to work with W2K and WXP SP2 with right click via the menu key and my bluetooth keyboard works as well. Finally, I can admin my W2K servers from my jacket pocket! I can also report that it does not seem to work with Vista's RD at all :(

I would love to see some sort of connection manager to hold information for multiple connections, support for the on-screen-keyboard and better hildonization...and Vista support. I will happily make a cash donation should these even get done! I have access to a fair number of machines running TS/RDP and am happy to test anything you would like.

Great work!

disq 2007-03-05 10:21

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

rdesktop.org has a 1.5.0, if you have a linux box could you try and see if it works with Vista?

I added two feature requests (reminders if you will) about vista and server history, and I'll try to look into it soon. (btw going from 0.2 to 0.3 was only a night's work, so "soon" is not three-months-soon, more like three days :p )

Better (erm, real) hildonization would require major fiddling with the code. Last year, the original author/IT2005-porter Simon Guerrero started on that (there's some incomplete code in svn) but he didn't have the time to get it working. I don't really want to get into it, because it would just take too long. But I posted a job about this on the maemo garage so I'm looking for a developer to do the hildonization.

BTW it would work much better if maemo provided different keycodes for the built in hardware keys. As it is, it's not possible to use F4 and F5 keys (eg. via a bluetooth keyboard) because F4=menu and F5=home. I will add a bluetooth-keyboard-mode that removes F4 and F5 limitations in the next release. (I'll just move them to weird-yet-easy-to-find-on-a-bluetooth-keyboard key combinations. This time the "real" hardware keys won't behave, but it's ok since power key will still switch to desktop)

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

disq, according to this mailing list message announcing the release of 1.50 of rdesktop, it has basic support for Vista Beta 2. That was almost half a year ago. I would bet that if you compiled a more recent version from CVS, Vista support would probably be pretty solid by now.

Rocketman 2007-03-05 13:28

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

I just built the 1.5 stable release on my Ubuntu Edgy box and can verify that it does connect and seem to work fine with a computer running Vista Ultimate. It seems that 1.5 also supports some pretty cool features that let you run an individual app from off the remote server, a bit like Citrix or X. They are calling it "Seamless RDP." This would be a really cool way to run applications like Firefox, Thunderbird, or just about anything on the N800. It would really fill in some missing functionality. This is just way cool!

What version of rdesktop are you currently building against/have adapted?

Texrat 2007-03-05 16:10

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Well, I installed the new rdesktop, and configured it, but I can't see how to launch the client app and can't find any docs on it, either.

???

EDIT: nevermind, I figured out I needed to launch it from xterm (rdesktop <server>). Of course, now I get an error that says "unable to resolve host".

*sigh*

disq 2007-03-05 18:38

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

rocketman: 1.4.1. it's the version simon worked on porting.

texrat: just shouldn't happen. 770 or n800? firmware version? it should just have a menuitem in the extras menu and work.

Texrat 2007-03-05 19:10

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

The device was an N800, and I can't divulge the firmware version (sorry) as it's unreleased.

I get the application up ok from the icon in Extras, but after entering the data and pressing OK the app closes and that's it. I came to the assumption that I was simply seeing the configuration and so looked into it further, where I found that executing rdesktop from a command line was the solution. However, I receive the error I mentioned. I tried various permutations of the settings to no effect.

I'll try it on other firmware builds.

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

I got it working on the release n800 firmware from the program menu.

My wishlist is zoom and fullscreen/windowed from the hw buttons, connection phonebook, and tap-and-hold for the right mouse button. It seems vry stable and quick, much faster than the Mac RDC client.

ok jc, can you highlight your steps to success?

Rocketman 2007-03-06 03:03

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

I had no issues installing (from the .deb file on Maemo Garage) or running it on my n800 with the latest released firmware. I did notice that netbios name resolution doesn't work and just causes the program to disappear, so you have to remember the ips of machines on your network. I didn't try any FQDN's, though.

Texrat 2007-03-06 03:13

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Rocket, are you leaving the domain field blank?

EDIT: tried it at home on N800, firmware build 2.2006.51-6, connecting to xp 64 pc. Tried pc name and IP address both; program behaves the same: just shuts down after pressing OK. There's currently no domain per se, just a router.

:(

EDIT 2: checked in xterm; the error here at home is "connection refused". I know I have the credentials correct, sooo...???

jcostantino 2007-03-06 16:47

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

I downloaded the .DEB, installed it, went to Extras and Rdesktop. It opens, asks for the server details and I type in the IP address of my server (in this case, XP Pro 32 bit), user name and password and click OK.

I don't have anything special installed but I'll run down my list in case something is a dependency that isn't being asked for:

canola 1.0.1-1
flite 1.3
godmode 1.0
libncurses5 5.4-4
maemo-mapper 1.4.2-5
maemopad 1.5
mplayer 1.0rc1-maemo.10
ncurses-base 5.4-4
omweather 0.16
osso-xterm 0.13 (I need to upgrade this, it doesn't handle backspaces)
proj 4.4.9-3
rdesktop 0.3a
system-monitor-plugin 1.2
vncviewer 0.6

And that's it. The firmware is 2.2006.51-6 and is a fresh reinstall from a weekago because my Bluetooth got trashed.

I've been quitting out of the app from the client side but I forgot that you can go to the start menu and choose Disconnect.

Even mapping the MMC card as a network share works well.

Edit: Rdesktop doesn't like the N800 going to sleep, hangs the connection and requires a reboot. I wish they made the battery easier to remove or the unit harder to freeze up!

disq 2007-03-09 23:09

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

@jcostantino: after coming out of sleep mode, try using the home key or the power key to get to the desktop.

@all: i tried backporting 1.5.0 to maemo, it works but RDP5 support (in arm, x86 works fine) has problems and it's painfully slow to use. not to mention consistent high cpu usage when connected. using RDP4 is ok but then it won't mount drives and possibly won't connect to Vista, so kinda pointless to publicly release it at this point. But I submitted the code as a new branch in garage if anybody's interested. (I can also build a .deb too, but as I said, it's useless right now)

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Help!

What are the input parameters for RDesktop?

RDP server: The WinXP PC's IP address? Mine is on a router, 192.168.1.101?
Username: Windows username at the top of START menu?
Password: ? I don't have any, leave it blank?
Domain: home (from ipconfig) ?

If I use these, it cannot connect......

disq 2007-03-10 00:01

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

rdp server is the ip address. you need tcp port 3389 to be open. if it is behind a router you'll have to set up port forwarding for tcp/3389.

username is the windows username. password is the user's password. leave domain blank.

9a6or 2007-03-10 00:20

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

:o how do I open that tcp port? Is it in Windows Security Center / Windows Firewall / Exceptions / Add Port?

I did that and still no joy...

9a6or 2007-03-10 00:27

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

Hold on, it was 3306 before, now it's 3389. Fine. This is in fact a preset in the Firewall Exceptions. I have enabled that now, and RDesktop accepts the settings but then quits and leaves

"ERROR: connect: Connection refused"

on XTerm.

disq 2007-03-10 00:29

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

You need to enable "Remote Desktop" in xp. (my computer - properties - remote)

Did you try to backport the 1.5 stable release or use something more recent from CVS? It has been six months since 1.5 was released and it sounded like Vista support was a bit preliminary at that point. You might have better success trying to adapt something more recent. I checked the CVS and it looks like there has been some activity since the last stable release. Have you bugged the arm vs x86 issues upstream?

disq 2007-03-10 01:43

Re: ZOMG it runs XP!!!11!1!!one!

CVS has the same problems as 1.5.0 release. I posted my results to rdesktop-devel list but it doesn't seem like the list is actually working.
