Please help me use the Bluetooth DUN to my LG VX8300

Pairing up my new n800 to my LG VX8300 verizon phone was no problem. But everytime I try to connect using my phone, the phone seems to dial and then drops the connection.

I am trying to use the 1x network and I have disabled the EVDO stuff on the phone.

I have entered the connection info correctly, I believe. #777, [mynumber]@vzw3g.com, vzw.

Should I be using Packet or Data on the N800?

I know the phone is setup correctly because I can use it as a bluetooth modem from my MacBookPro. I'm sure that I'm missing something silly on this N800. I've only had it out of the box for about 30 minutes now...

Okay, so with a little more research, I have found a reference to the problem in this thread over in HowardForums...

http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...hreadid=998021

"- Edit /etc/ppp/option and uncomment "+pap" and "-chap". It appears that vzw can't handle the attempt at CHAP authentication."

I recall that I did have to do this on my MacBookPro to get it to work with bluetooth DUN as well.

Now my question is, how do I get at "/etc/ppp/option" in order to make the edits required?

Re: Please help me use the Bluetooth DUN to my LG VX8300

;) You will need to become ' Root ' then you will need to use ' vi editor ' ( or something similar ) to edit the files. You will also need ' xterm '. The details of these ( and their use ) are mentioned comprehensively at maemo.org. Please check that out.;)

Arjun,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to this newbie! I will continue to check out the resources at maemo.org....the learning curve on all this is a little steeper than I suspected!

So if I understand you correctly, I need to install xterm onto the N800 first and then become root and then edit the settings....is that right?

I made the above changes to the /etc/ppp/options file on my N800, and my DUN error went from an authentication error to an internet connection error while trying to connect to Verizon. My bluetooth connection to my LG VX8500 is OK, because I can dial in to my ISP. The phone is set for 1X, etc.

Howard...

I am experiencing the exact same thing now.... I changed the options file and now I get "Internet connection failed" error message when trying to connect with my phone. I know my phone works, too, because I can use it to access the internet with my MacBookPro no problem.

Anyone have any ideas???

I too am having the same problem with my 700p, works with my laptop so I know its not the phone. If this isn't corrected the 800 goes back.

My settings for my 770 and LG VX8600 are:
Dial-up number: #777
User name: <MDN>@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw

Connection type: Packet data

The <MDN> must automatically retrieve the number from the phone.

The MDM is not necessarily your phone number.

BanditRider...

Do you mean that you just keep the username as "<MDN>@vzw3g.com" instead of changing it to "1234567890@vzw3g.com"???

And I wonder what my MDN is if it is not my number?

Re: Please help me use the Bluetooth DUN to my LG VX8300

Yes, enter it as "<MDN>@vzw3g.com"

Thanks, BanditRider... I will certainly give this a try.

Did you have to edit etc/ppp/options as well?

Thanks for the link... I have seen that one before. Like I said, I have my phone working perfectly as a bluetooth modem with my laptop, so I don't think the phone is the issue. It seems to be something with the N800. And I think there is something different with the setup of the N800 vs the 770 in this regard.

I guess I need to hear from anyone who has set up the N800 successfully with bluetooth DUN to a verizon phone.

I've setup DUN to my Razr V3M and Verizon is my provider. The only issue I have is that when I "search" for connection, the DUN configuration isn't displayed. The oddity is that is worked fine before and after I upgraded the OS then it just stopped working. But other than that, it works fine. Some times, I do have to power the phone off then on again for it to work. I didn't have to manually edit any files.

Dial-up number: #777

Hope this helps,

Cecil...

Thanks for relating your experience. But did you do this on a N800 or are you a 770 user???

I have my N800 working through my VX8500 (Chocolate) on the Verizon network. Unfortunately, telling you how I got it to work is not straight forward, because I'm not sure why it is now working. Here goes:

1. I edited the /etc/ppp/options file, but had no luck connecting to Verizon.
2. I looked at the same file from a N770 - they look identical. There are only a few uncommented lines, andd they are the same.
3. I edited the N770 options file, paired my phone with a N770, and the connection worked on the first try.
4. I copied the same options file onto my N800
5. I had to re-pair the phone with the N800 & delete the N770 profie from the phone, but after all this the connection started working - even fast enough to stream audio.

6. I have no idea what was the key step, or if it will be stable. !!

Howard,

This is VERY interesting to me!!! Is there any way I can get a hold of a copy of your /etc/ppp/options file? Maybe you could copy it to your User directory and then email it to me from the N800? I would like to try this file in my N800 and see if it works with my VX8300.

I'm having a similar problem. Although mine is with an E2 ROKR and cingular. My N800 will not complete a connection to the gprs with it. (It does work with my V540 tho). I can pair just fine and the dialup starts and works, but then disconnects as soon as the authentication process completes. Can howardcb send me a mail too?

Thanks,

Jae

I am sorry to say that I've still had no luck getting my N800 to connect to my LG vx8300 verizon phone as a bluetooth DUN modem. I hope someone else much brighter than me can figure this out one day and tell me about it!

I still cannot connect to my ROKR E2. There must be some configuration in the N800 that is incompatible...like a timeout or something.

Yep, I agree... There must be something different with the N800 vs. the 770 in this specific area.

My verizon phone works perfectly as a bluetooth DUN with my laptop....just not with the N800. So sad.

jwtseng, did you ever work out your problem connecting with the VX8300 to the N800?

I just got a N800 and also have a VX8300 with Verizon and was disappointed to hear that it may not be compatible. Did you end up getting a different phone from Verizon and if so what did you get?

jwtseng 2007-03-26 23:55

Re: Please help me use the Bluetooth DUN to my LG VX8300

papi...

you know, it's so sad. I still haven't been able to get my N800 to use the VX8300 as a bluetooth modem. I don't know if anyone else has this combination working. It would be great to hear, though.

i'm going to be flashing with the newest OS iteration soon to see if that makes any difference.

Ok...My aunt and I are having the same ÄAuthentication Failed"error. I did not have this with my verizon V325I, am now having it with the LG VX8350. My aunt has a RAZR. I have the 770 and she has the N800. I understand the the /etc/ppp/options needs to be edited. I can find the file in file manager and have even read it. But I can't seem to get the "-Edit /etc/ppp/options" to work. Help!!!!! I can only get as far as "/etc/ppp/ #".

Thanks!

Figured i would report my experience....

I have a Verizon vx9900 aka the enV and I hacked with QPST to change my NAI to ##########@vzw3g.com and it worked like a charm. I used the above as the username and verizon as the password from within the n800 settings.

My Nokia 770 & Phone are paired, but they are not connecting together anymore.

Can someone please provide a "How-To"...?

(That link on HowardForums doesn't work anymore (I had it bookmarked from long ago).
