Great news, thanks for the report -- and sorry that vibrate causes problems. I'm thinking of making little microfiber cloth squares so that vibrate/acrylic won't be a problem.

LOLOLOLOL!!!!

MY LASER CAR!! BALTIC PERCH STAND!!

www.maemo.org == mario cuomo the orgy

Seriously, that is so completely hilarious. I laughed for almost ten minutes.

And it's also kinda scary, even with all these mistakes it is very good speech translation software.

fake: You are a legend, my home/office pack arrived this morning, and in agreement with everyone else, they are great.

Just for reference it took 10 working days to get to the UK.

My N900 looks so much happier sitting on it, so thanks for this cheap and very handy product!

I'm sure I'll get you a few more sales :)

Andy

PS: Please please please make a credit card sized fold-away stand for my wallet :-D and end world famine... etc

I'm working on it. ;) Just doing all kinds of materials testing at the moment.

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

For a credit-card sized folding stand, would it be OK if it was somewhat less sturdy than the wood/acrylic stands?

Basically, I have two options. I can make it in two pieces that slot together at a 90 degree angle. That results in a relatively sturdy stand, but it's not as precise or perfect as the ones I'm selling.

The other option is to try to make it from some a material which is laminated to something flexible. The flexible material forms a hinge that allows the other part to fold out. This option, which is probably the best for wallets, is also the one that I'm least certain about in terms of typing stability.

I guess the real question here is -- for an on-the-go stand, would you mostly be using it for typing or for having the phone upright while you do other things?

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

I wouldn't use it for typing too much, so the 2-piece stand would probably be a better bet (for me personally)

Good luck with the designing, and thanks on behalf of the n900 community.

Definitely interested in seeing your sketches. I had the idea to make a kind of "universal holder" which would be an N900 grip with a 1/4 20 nut on the back or a grid of holes, so you could mount it to anything.

For an on-the-go stand, I use http://www.gogostand.com/ for my Droid. Wouldn't that also work for the N900, or is it too heavy or thick or something? It folds down to a credit-card form factor that I stow in my wallet. Seems like it holds my N800 just fine too. **shrug**

that'd be cool to keep in your wallet (if it works with N900)
and use the fake N900 stand at home :D

A response today from dean@gogostand.com: "Yes the N900 will work on the gogostand. It's actually quite similar to the Droid. I have 3 angles that you can adjust the tilt of the stand so if it tends to fall backwards, you just adjust it to a closer notch."

I would hope so :)

Customer service and product quality are awfully high.

fake 2010-03-13 01:08

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

It's been good, but not as lucrative as this thread might suggest.

Good sides:

1. Got out of credit card debt (I wasn't that far in, but this is the biggest positive for me, I feel great about it)

2. Paid the remaining money I owed on the laser (a few hundred bucks for some upgrades), and bought insurance for it.

3. Started a small business and optimized shipping/got set up with Shopify (wouldn't have done this otherwise, VERY glad I did).

3. N900 paid for itself.

4. Made a bunch of people happy while making something useful for myself. (rare opportunity! I feel good offering better and more personal service than Nokia or some random eBay vendor)

Downsides:

1. Lots of time invested -- more than I care to admit, but I'm obsessive about making sure everyone is happy.

2. Hard to see where to go from here if I wanted to try to make a living this way (though again, the extra money is just so helpful right now, I've been living in debt and uninsured for too long).

Those are some pretty awesome returns, and some small downsides. I'm grateful for all the orders, support, and good will from T.M.O and hope to keep supplying stands and interesting accessories to everyone as they come up. I'm also hoping that I can, in some small way, reward/encourage other people (like the USB OTG hackers, and the NeoPwn folks) who are doing useful stuff with the N900.

Still waiting for the stylii I ordered to come in from China. Once they arrive, I'll announce my next product...

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

Hey Fake. Glad I got to benefit from your entrepreneurship. If you make a travel stand I'll definitely be on the lookout. The acrylic stand won't stand the wear and tear of multiple assemblies / disassemblies. I had to go on a trip for the past 2 weeks and with multiple layovers had to assemble / disassemble my stand a couple of times and I see a crack starting to form so that will now be my stationary stand and I'll use the wooden one for travel. I would definitely be keen on a travel specific stand that's very durable. Maybe you can just laser-cut one out of aluminum. ;-)

Thanks again for an awesome product.

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

geohsia, you're right, the acrylic stand is meant to be assembled and used, not to be disassembled multiple times.

I have a few different travel stands that I'm prototyping, but they're all suffering from not being durable enough. To find a material that is both laserable and that will survive in a wallet is rather tough. Most of my ideas so far have broken after a week or so of abuse in pockets -- (I put them in my back pocket, my desk chair is metal -- also drop them on the floor and assemble/disassemble them dozens of times).

Contact me via email if the crack in your stand renders it unusable.

Unless you go with a flexible material I think you're doomed to it breaking unless you go metal and even then it might bend. My criteria is maybe less stringent. I am only concerned about the item being able to assemble / disassemble over time. To me flexible means it will bend and lose structural integrity over time. I prefer rigid. Maybe that means the wood stand is good enough for me.

Thanks for the offer to help me replace my stand(if that's what you're implying), but its a user issue and I wouldn't even think of asking you to replace it because of something I did. If I break it I'd be happy to buy another one.

If you're taking suggestions...

the only thing I am concerned about is on the thin sliver of wood on the back piece. If you extended the width of the back piece to make that little piece wider I think it'll make it much more durable over time and less likely to break.

Another idea is that I have an Oakley microfiber sunglasses bag which fits perfectly the N900(basically a small rectangular sack). If you design the pieces so that when flat they can piece together to form roughly the rectangle silhouette of the N900 you can put a zipper compartment on the bag where the pieces lie flat. When the N900 is in basically the pieces add just barely any thickness. You don't have to worry about it breaking in your back pocket because if it does your N900 is toast too.

I'm not saying they're good ideas. I'm just sayin... ;-) BTW, don't feel like you need to respond to these. I like making up stupid ideas every once in a while. BTW, if you do decide to make a metal one. I think the side pieces are one notch away from being a bottle opener. Just sayin...

Re: Laser-Cut Stand for N900

fake - I read through this whole thread last night and i have to give you major props. This is one heck of an undertaking and these stands seem great! Ironically, I built a stand slightly similar for my phone when I got it, though it was out of legos. I had tossed around the idea of making some and selling them similar to what you're doing. Now I'm not so sure I want to. I don't want to step on your feet. You've done a lot of work and to see how much it's helped you is great.

Anyways - I just had to give you props for this. I wish I'd seen this thread earlier, I practically live in Excel and could've helped you with that.

You can order them via the online store (linked from the first post), with shipping anywhere worldwide. They're usually posted very quickly (providing fake doesn't get flooded out anyway).

And you, fake, are the EPITOME of precisely the kind of outgoing and supportive business I want to support and see more of. Your business relationship (you gained profit from providing things consumers are asking for and listening to constructive criticism and suggestions) makes you at least meet all my expectations of how a business should be run. But, your assurance to stand behind the quality of your workmanship as well as your apparently genuine interest in maintaining communications with your consumers on a personal level far exceeds my expectations and places you a high rating.

I don't have an N900, I barely use my N800 anymore and I already have the multimedia base for my Droid and the GoGo stand satisfies my needs for a portable stand, but I may find myself interested in purchasing a larger screened tablet in the future (probably an Android like the MSI tablet, since I don't see Nokia doing anything interesting to me anymore). I'd be curious to see whether your stands might hold a larger tablet form factor (like the iPad or the MSI, etc.), or whether it can be altered slightly to accommodate (seeing as how you use those two touch-points in front to hold it in place, it might just work, as long as it's not too thick).

Now THIS I'd buy if you made N800 styluses. I'd probably buy a pack to re-sell some to the poor fools who followed me into buying their N800's and now can't get these replacement parts. :)

You know what would be nice? Some premium stylii from alternative materials, like a nice hardwood (e.g. purpleheart, snakewood, et.c.) or aluminium. I know that may be unlikely to be feasible but I would certainly welcome the option ;)

Maybe I am just daft :D
