Search is a great functionality, whether you do it here or on your phone app manager.

gFTP (in Extras-Devel) seems to be a pretty full-featured FTP client

I'm looking for the same... but nothing.. the extra devel is for developers..

I got proftp and dftp... with .deb extension... I tried to install but there are no permissions. when I put root (do I need to execute rootsh?.. or only install it?) there is a message

Nokia-N900-51-1:~# apt-get install proftpd_1.3.2d-1_armel.deb
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

This means that another process is accessing the package database. If the Application Manager is running, you may want to close it.

EDIT: to install a single deb file, you also need to use dpkg instead of apt-get: "dpkg -i proftpd_1.3.2d-1_armel.deb".
EDIT2: additionally, proftpd is a FTP server, not a client.
