Absolutely .. and I LOVE IT.

Being able to participate in the development of a new device is exciting and rewarding.

Great work Nokia.

That's why things such as selinux and similar exist that can limit what even root can do on the system iirc.

So yes provisioning would be possible but the IT department would basically need to lock the device down to a symbian state.

i carry both devices for calling i prefer to use the iphone better one hand operation (personal opinion) and for texting on the move again the iphone, however, generally i use the n900 alot more, conversations, browsing it simply depends on where i am and what im doing.

They would then have to watch for all updates in case a new firmware release came along etcetera. The hardwar can support it but the whole point of Maemo 5 is that it is an open device. As has already been mentioned in several posts, this is an N series device, not an E series device which is design for corporate interactions.

They assume everyone who uses the contact manager knows everything there is to know about all their contacts country codes. Maybe in Finland they do, but in America, nobody except PR people have more than one contact with a country code that isn't +1.

They don't support common Wifi security combinations in the US (even though those security combinations might be totally ******ed).

They don't support Email servers that the iPhone does out of the box.

Just lots of little support issues that don't seem to be an issue in Finland or maybe in Europe and Asia in general, but in the US we do things a bit differently (again, often ******edly) and Nokia doesn't seem to be on top of that.

Amen! Totally true.

That is a good one. I use iphone 3gs during the day as need it for work. in the evening i have been playing more with N900. Browser is great, but freezes at times, more often when several windows open. I tried to watch some movies, but picture stutters quite a bit. I can access my gmail, and that is nice, but cant copy and paste within the text of the email, some attachments do not show as attachments and my sent box does not download my previously sent messages.........

Re: NOKIA guinea pigs........

I just don't think thats the case :0) For me i looked all over the phone market to find a phone i wanted. I searched long and hard on reviews and phone review comparrisons narrowing it down to the HTC pro touch 2, N900 and the iphone. After reading many reviews i discounted the HTC and after playing with and looking at the spec of the iphone i ended up choosing the N900.
Now i was worried sick as its less of a phone and more of a computer lol that it would not be enough for me but to the contrary i have been amazed at what an amazing device it is hence for me it was the right choice.
Yes no doubt nokia will make a better version of this but then does this same ethic not apply to every phone on the market which gets upgraded periodically by the manufacterers?

Re: NOKIA guinea pigs........

Nope happy as can be, I knew what I was getting.
Hell even the pre-production phone I had was making me go crazy with joy that I could FINALLY get a phone I could customize in a way I never been able to do before :D

And yes, I will buy the next Maemo fuled computer/phone from day one.

No phone yet have ever been close to this perfect piece of hardware from day one, just look how damn crappy HTC phones been in the past or early android OS (scary) and I donīt evn want to mention how bad the first iphone sucked...
Exactly 0 apps at release and how fun is a iphone without apps, yea thatīs correct itīs worthless...

Re: NOKIA guinea pigs........

Goober's Dream (to the tune of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables)

There was a time when geeks were kind,
And their voices soft,
And their words inviting.
There was a time when phones were fine,
Each ringtone was a song,
And the song was exciting.
There was a time when it all went wrong...

I dreamed a dream in time gone by,
When hope was high and life worth living.
I dreamed that MfE made my phone fly,
I dreamed IT gods would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid,
And dreams were made and used and wasted.
There was no ransom to be paid,
No mail unsent, no port untested.

But the admins come at night,
With their voices soft as thunder,
As they tear your hope apart,
And they turn your dream to shame.

I strapped my new phone to my side,
It filled my days with endless wonder...
I took provisioning in stride,
But it was gone when admins came!

And still I dream it comes to me,
That we will live the years together,
But there are dreams that cannot be,
And there are storms we cannot weather!

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living,
So different now from what it seemed...
Nokia has killed the dream I dreamed...

If he's accessing via the internal mail client, that doesn't work. The biting irony is that it's a dumb oversight, copy/paste works everywhere else (including editing messages) whereas on the iPhone it took until 3.0 to support it at all.

this is a known bug, 5033, which is actually dependent on 4619, which in turn has been fixed internally.

you can expect this to be resolved with the next firmware release.

Just a reminder: the talk forums include an Ignore List, which can be helpful if you don't want to see a particular user's posts. You can also get to the IgnoreList via the Control Panel.

Except that moderators can't realistically ignore anyone if we want to be able to do a fair job for everyone. That also means that the luxury that most users have where they are able to ignore some annoying users is not a privilege we can hope for.

the only work around i found for this is to hit the reply button, then you can copy and paste.

As im here why is it that when you forward some emails they show as an attachment, is this also a bug? coz when i usually forward an email i like to write a little intro and then send. im sure this hasnt happend before!

Maybe you ought to consider recoding with a slightly more modest codec-rate? I've been playing movies off my N900 on my 37 inch HDTV and even though it's not HD quality, distortion is fairly minimal (limited to widespread fast changing images) and stuttering is very rare to non-existing. Playing movies on the device itself gives me no issues whatsoever.

I wish it could sync Photos and Vidoes too like with my N95, which also correct the file time with timezone. Now I have to manually copy the photos and vidoes out whch cause duplicate copies and also mess up the file time.

You're welcome. There are a lot of keyboard shortcuts, someone did put them in the WiKi somewhere I think.

No. I think it's a wise move and one that we will all benefit from in the long run.

The road ahead may be a bit choppy but we will pull through and come out stronger on the other side.

I also like the name.

Pfft... iPhone? Didn't they just now get the ability to use the Slingplayer (streaming dvr) App? My last gen nokia (n95) had that years ago as well as other features that Apple has slowly been catching up with.

The only thing the iphone impressed me with was its browser and polish. But now the n900 wins hands down with firefox/microb, and what it lacks in polish it makes up for in functionality and openness.

Don't disparage an awesome product just because you didn't do your research before buying.

I guess you could blame Nokia for not putting a sign out that says "You must be THIS tall to ride".
