I still haven't updated my firmware... should I?

To be honest I'm just scared I might ruin what's working so well so far for me. Everything works just fine as it is, but I keep reading issues of the loop of reboot death, videos not playing, and other things. All it does is convince me to stay with the version I have... the ver before 1.1

I just need to man up I guess, or stick with what I have?

I feel exactly the same!

I am dependent on my n900 and have been using it quite heavily over the past couple of months. I'm happy enough with it.

I have been working in I.T. for many years and one thing you should never do is perform these upgrades lightly!

I know Nokia will be releasing the 1.2 update soon - I will wait until it is released - gauge the reaction to it and maybe perform the upgrade.

If the 1.1 upgrade is needed first then I suggest you find out what problems it causes and then find out what workarounds are needed to fix them.

The 1.1 upgrade has been out for a while now - learn as much as you can about it and apply the upgrade.

beware: once you upgrade you cannot rollback to the previous version.

Before you do anything make sure you back-up your important data first!

That's what I will be doing! :)

Absolutely no issues my end and i'm swimming in testing and dev applications at the moment. Had a marked battery increase of appx 2 - 4 hours depending on usage.

:D - i think it entirely depends on how the device is used to feedback :D

Re: I still haven't updated my firmware... should I?

Better you don't do at this time
I also didn't update my device for the same reason if got dead after or while update. and moreover I am in India and if something gone wrong I wouldn't be able to return or repair it from any Nokia care centre as it is not launched here yet.
Other important consideration may be that Nokia might be aware of this kind of non-sense occuring with the update, so might be a possibility they fix their this issue that no device get dead, bricked due to their next update for the same,
so better wait for update 1.2 and moreover there isn't something very very good in 1.1, just few things enabled for device
and there is no case that you won't be able to update directly to 1.2 from 1.0 without 1.1, With NOKIA SOFTWARE UPDATER it can be resolved, but might there be problem with flasher softwares.

Note that if you're still running PR1.0 there's a known "bricking" bug.

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6350

So in fact at this point you might even have a more slight change of it getting bricked if you keep using PR1.0 than if you update.

WoW how can you people live without PR 1.1? 1.1 is a whole new experience!

So true. I've had mine since the first week of January and everything is fine. I've been reading the initial problem reports of 1.1 and that's the only thing scaring me. I'll do more prodding and decision making.

It's the same as with any software really. You need to weigh up the costs & benefits of upgrading vs the costs & benefits of not upgrading. If you're not troubled by any of the issues that were fixed in PR1.1, and are concerned about issues that have been found since PR1.1, then don't upgrade. But don't be surprised if, when you do have any issues, the first advice is to upgrade.

Re: I still haven't updated my firmware... should I?

I think the upgrade is worth it, although mine died in the process of using NSU to perform the update (I got bored after 2 hours and pulled the cable out).

I quickly learnt how to use flasher-3.5, a great tool to perform the upgrade manually, and completely seamless.

For me, the enhancements in Mail for Exchange were the reason to upgrade, but I think that there are many reasons to go with the update, certainly worthwhile.

......and if things do go wrong, there i a very active communicty here waiting to help, and they have been far more supportive than similar ones for other devices I have owned

Yes, my advice would be to avoid NSU. Either use SSU to do the update over the air, or use flasher. NSU has been behind a large proportion of the upgrade horror stories.

Re: I still haven't updated my firmware... should I?

The new fw update .51 is great.

One of the biggest problems I had was multiple phone numbers for a contact. Prior to the update, the call log would NOT show the number that was dialed/used meaning when you selected a contact from the call log it would show all numbers for that contact and prompt you to select a number LOL. The update fixed this :)
Phone is running faster now, especially emails.

Beware, if you update from NSU, you may lose all your settings and previously installed programs on phone memory.

While you can get by without 1.1, you'll definitely want 1.2 if you plan on installing qt apps from extras. They won't be supported for pre-1.2 builds at all.

I agree, OTA update worked like a dream for my and the wifes N900s. The wife got impatient and wanted to restart it but i gave her a slap and told her to be patient! :)

Update process took a fair while. i must admit that when the wife started panicking i jumped in the shower for 15 mins and both devices had completed.

Reckon it was a good 25 mins and i made sure both were on mains charger before initiating the updates.

I noticed an improvement in battery life as the most significant improvement. As for holding until the next firmware, i heard somewhere that updates could be incremental in the future so it may mean that you would have to go to current FW before going to the latest once it comes out. dont quote me on this, maybe an expert in the O/S can confirm?

Re: I still haven't updated my firmware... should I?

mine was working very fine before i updated it.. i dont have the reason too to upgrade it to 1.1.. but i chose to upgrade it... and its worth it.. the battery life is little longer now.. and i can see faster web loading and changing apps.. its up to you if you don't want to upgrade for now.. well, if your ok with that.. then just keep that.. =]
