Been away..got some catch-up questions

Been away from anything maemo-related and got some catch-up questions that maybe someone who visits this site more frequently could help answering (and to save me from having to search through the site);

1) What is the status on Mer for Diablo?
(Were the drivers ever received, etc)?

2) Is there a Google-Buzz application written or planned for Diablo?

3) Is there a four-square application written or planned for Diablo?

4) Is there a Twitter alternative to Mauko and/or will Mauko for Fremantle be back-ported to Diablo anytime soon?

Thanks in advance.

not so sure about 2,3, and 4, but the drivers were received (assuming you're talking about the TI ones).

The 3d drivers have been delivered but are still in a proof of concept stage. It's being actively worked on, with slow but apparently steady progress. Search the thread that focuses on the drivers for more technical discussions

There's a beta application for Fremantle, no word on a Diablo version.

Witter should be available for Diablo although it looks like it is trailing behind the Fremantle version. It uses python and apparently is being highly actively maintained, at least the Fremantle version that is. Find the witter thread for more info.

Diablo is pretty much dead. :( Everybody has moved to Fremantle and N900. Mer is still in same state as it were ~4 months ago (0.16 is the latest release). So, you haven't missed much I guess..

Re: Been away..got some catch-up questions

Thanks (jcharpak in particular).

1) Mer, kind of as I suspected. Guess I'll check in in another six months and see if it is any closer :)

2) Google Buzz
What I ended up doing was using the Google latitude app. It has a Buzz layer that works really well for people that are geographically close to me.

3) Foursquare
I got the Barriosquare app working on my N810 just an hour ago. It looks nice but is kinda clunky to use and froze on the map screen. May tinker with it some but doesn't seem to run too smoothly on Diablo.

4) Twitter
Thanks, I'll check out Witter.

shin made his first new application called SVG Clock and it works like magic.

You should check it out.

CORRECTION! EVERYBODY HAS NOT MOVED TO FREMANTLE AND N900!!!!!!!

Thank you.

While Diablo may be on life support, I for one am sick of the assumption that everybody here has focused their attention on the N900 and all things related to it.

FYI: the next time I spend $500 on a device it will most likely be for the ipad. And even if I do, I will not part with my n810 as it will serve different functions.

I have no intention on spending anymore money on Maemo as in reality, IT IS dead! While I believe this, it doesn't mean that a perfectly good device that I already own and use like the n810 needs to be thrown in a drawer and replaced with something newer.

Well I haven't really noticed much relevant activity recently in Applications section or Chinook/Diablo forums. There is activity but compared to N900 and Fremantle it's minimal at least. We have been overrun by N900. But I suppose it was only matter of time since N8x0s are quite old and N900 is much more popular than those.

My N810 also works. However I wish it was little bit more capable. I guess I need also new hardware to be more satisfied with my mobile browsing experience but so far I haven't found replacing device. IPad looks nice but it's too big for some of my use cases. If it's possible to tether iPad to mobile phone using BT, then I have to seriously consider it.

I have been using Firefox since first beta. Really promising browser and I like it more than MicroB. However, it needs more resources than N810 has. If I'm running Canola in the background (and I'm doing that on every bus trip to and from work), it freezes the tablet for some seconds in some cases. Maybe it's the Weave or Adblock running on the background, I don't know but it makes my N810 experience less enjoyable. I would like to switch to some other device but so far I haven't found anything that fits my liking and wallet.

I'm the author of Witter, I'm afriad the diablo version is very far behind the fremantle version, simply because it's a pain to try to maintain both and keep things up. That said I do have at the back of my mind a refactoring to a better engineered code base, which might make it possible for me to bring diablo up to date. No promises, but if nothing else I will end up with a better engineered code base which might make it easier for someone else to get it up and running on diablo.

This will hopefully improve. Currently, Firefox doesn't quite fly on the N900 either.

Diablo was more or less dead the moment Maemo 5 started coming into its own, around version 42, or whatever the last major release was. Mer can't get enough interest to go anywhere, so I think it's pretty much dead as a project. Especially since, by the time they get anything resembling a 1.0rc release, all n8xx's will be dead, or so few in number and marginalized that nobody will care. I suspect they'll need to go to a kernel that supports both architectures (n8xx and n9xx) in order to have any hope of really coming alive again.

Re: Been away..got some catch-up questions

Witter on the N900 is going great, I would just like to say. All it needs is the ability to save multiple searches and it will do everything I need it to do.

I don't understand Mauko; I pointed out the importance of searching six months or so ago and I haven't seen progress that seems significant to me... Witter gets my allegiance. It would sure be great to see more progress for the Diablo version, too.

FYI, here's likely why Mer is dead/dying. There's no need to keep it around anymore.

Mer is still in progress last I remember; v.17 was the one in testing a few weeks ago.
Buzz doesn't use an app, its all web-based (and better that way IMO)
Foursquare for diablo, eh, I guess so
Mauku is already on Diablo

I'm fairly sure I read a comment from the author of Mauko that he is no longer actively developing it.

put multiple search terms separated by commas, eg

#n900, #witter, #maemo

and it will search each term individually. not sure if that's quite what you meant, but it will also 'store' those search terms in teh sense that witter will remember them and pu thtem back in the search bar automagically.

if not then it will stop working in June. Hopefully he'll release an update to support oauth before then.

He is no longer developing Mauku for Diablo that is correct. There was talk of an effort to backport some of the changes made on the backend from the Freemantle version, but I'm not sure where those went as I trailed off in terms of attention span there.

I'd better start getting used to witter then. I use Mauku a lot.

I would really like to see Mer evolve on the N8x0 despite MeeGo, which doesn't run on the N8x0. Diablo is a fine tablet OS, but Mer would open more possibilities on these tablets.

agreed. With 0.17 on my N800 Mer is really good and seems quite stable, but the big issue with it is the speed of the desktop or ratherf lack of it. Crack that and i think that more people would give it a go, and progress will probably accelerate.

Nokia need to be pressed to release, or at least allow certain community members to create, packages for the maiin apps on M5 such as the calendar, image editor, media player (sorry martin!) as well.
