PSP screen protectors: Weird
I bought a set of PSP screen protectors today. They're pretty cheap, and I only needed to take off a few mms on one side to meke them fit.
Funnily enough, after applying the protector to NaB00's screen, all its buttons started behaving quite weirdly: the on/off button would randomly activate, the D-pad either did nothing or registered double or triple presses, the menu-keys stopped working. After removing the PSP protectors, everything returned to normal (for now <knocks on wood>), so maybe those of you who have experienced similar problems might consider removing the PSP protectors. |
Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
I don't get it
You applied that screen protector and now the buttons don't work!? I am using also a screen protector (Vikuiti ARMR200) on my 770 and my new N800 and have no problems! Do you have a link to this psp protector? |
Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
Is it possible the PSP protector may have been putting tension on the LCD screen, ie, pulling up on it and somehow creating unwanted contacts somewhere? Other than that I can't think of a correlation...

Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
Having used screen protectors on PDAs I'm almost certain the problems you saw was caused by pressure on the digitizer. This is always a risk when applying a screen protector, if you use slightly too much pressure you'll squeeze the top layer enough to touch the digitizer, and then you'll see the problems you described (there's probably a data input layer (I'm talking about the OS here) that is kept 'busy' by the always-pressed digitizer, and thus the buttons appear not to work).
You should be ok if you're gentle while applying the screen protector. It can be a little tricky, I've run into the same kind of trouble several times on my PDAs. Removing the protector fixes the problem because that will 'lift' the LCD glass top away from the digitizer. |
Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
I thought I kept it clear from the sides (getting the screen protector under the edge is usually the "best" way to get digitizer malfunction -- also called "jaggies" in Newtonspeak), but it's hard to tell with cut-to-size protectors.
In any case, the next one I'll try will be a protector made for a touchscreen! |
Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
I've had problems too with a cheap PSP screen protector on my 770. As the PSP doesn't have a touch screen, thickness is not an issue, but it was on the 770, as the pen wasn't detected anymore, even with mucho pressure :-)

Re: PSP screen protectors: Weird
On the subject of screen protectors, but somewhat unrelated: My first Newton came with a screen protector on it; it was one of the lightly adhesive kind, with a particularly textured surface that was quite nice to write on (mind you, the Newton MessagePads had a coating on their screen that was very tactile as well). I liked it a lot, but never found out what brand it was.
When it finally wore out, I switched to NuShields (http://www.nushield.com/products.htm), which are of the non-adhesive kind. NuShields worked great on my Newton, but, in light of my experience, I don't think I'd recommend them for the N800, even if they were available for it. |
