Thank you for your informative post. I use a wheelchair, so I am limited as to where I can safely store things. So I notebook would be a last resort, as I would need to find a sturdy, yet easily accessible form of storage. This would not bad an issue with something as small as a handheld device. I also have a habit of dropping things, and it is much easier to find a ruggedized case for a handheld device.

Ah, I share your habit. :) :) One aspect of the n900 I love is the ability to use a lanyard (something I missed when I was using an iPhone), so now when I fumble my phone, it only dangles from my wrist, rather than falling to the floor. :)

Yeah, if space is truly at a premium, I've gotta say that it's easier to take notes with the n900 than any other cell-phone-sized device I've ever used. Sadly, that isn't saying much, as I haven't tested very many tiny devices in this way; but for me, the ability to open up a text file in Vim and edit it in exactly the same way I do on a desktop machine is amazing.

Lack of support, lack of upgrades, lack of a great Twitter app (Twimgo is , slower (now) than most other modern offerings, smaller screen, USB port might pop out... among other known issues that have some up around these parts such as 256mb RAM, lack of good front-facing camera, rootfs issues (fixes exist)...

The way you've answered all of the "for" shows me that you are more for and do not want to hear anything against it.

I change my mind. Get it, enjoy it. This is indeed a good community.

I bought mine back in early December (at the $350 price point), so yeah, I do think it is worth it. :) Then again, this is the only cell phone in the world that runs a real Linux distribution as its OS (no rooting or jailbreaking required), so for me, it was head and shoulders above the competition.

My understanding is that the n900 was somewhere around $600 when it first came out, so the price has dropped quite a bit. :)

Honestly, I'm not enough of a Nokia follower to really know what the company is doing, but there is a huge industry event coming up next week, and everyone seems to think Nokia will make some sort of announcement at it... So it might be worth it to sit back and see what happens.

Actually you need a Neos BTK-1 bluetooth keyboard to take note with N900 during class. Otherwise your professor would think you're playing mobile games. :rolleyes:

Good call. It's a "real" keyboard, but portable. Do you know where I can buy one? A Goggle search turned up nothing.

On another note, I've looked at MeeGo, and IMHO it's nowhere near ready for production phones (netbooks maybe, but not phones). So, I doubt Nokia will be announcing the N9/MeeGo device soon. Recent reports from CNet suggest that Nokia will announce a partnership with Microsoft to provide the Windows Phone 7 OS on lower-end (rather than symbian-based) handsets. No, thank you.

Does anyone know if the N900 is still being manufactured new?

The sticker on my n900's box includes the line "44/2010", which I interpret as saying it was manufactured in the 44th week of last year; so I figure they've been continuing to make them up to at least a few months ago...

I did a quick search and I just realize that it's difficult to find a Neos Blk-1 now, but you could still consider a Nokia SU-W8, though it's unnecessarily expensive (I always think a simple input device must be cheaper!).

It's significantly cheaper, and would probably be nicer to type on, judging from my experience with a similar full-size wired keyboard. However, it looks as if it would be nowhere near as portable as the Freedom Pro Keyboard.

Hey, not to get you worried or anything, but it would appear that Amazon (at least in the US) has sold out of their N900s; I just checked this morning, and they now are only offering it from a third party (at, unfortunately, a higher price). I guess this means that the supply of N900s is starting to dry up... :(

EDIT: Whoops, I screwed up! Amazon lists the n900 twice on their site -- if you choose the wrong version, you get the wrong price... :( They still have it available. :)
