How can I free up rootfs space and remove uninstalled app files/folders?

Hello all
Sorry if this has already been answer (I've seen some stuff but not a complete answer)

I have been installing and uninstalling apps from the Extra and Devel Cats. So my question is what can I do to free Rootfs space and get rid of the files and folder left over from uninstalled apps. Kinda like when you uninstall something from windows it leave unneeded regs files, drivers and empty folders... (Im a average everyday Windows user, new to linux based OS)
Can someone provide a simple "how-to" for us linux noobs?

I ask because my rootfs has 20mb free and my n900 is starting to lag here and there.

Thanks :)

That's a start, but with a pretty small rootfs and so many (kinda large) app what else can we do...
Also how can I view all the hidden system files/folder on my n900?

Use GPE file manager. Works great. But if you want to edit or delete them, you have to have root access with emelfm2. Or another file manager but I find emelfm2 to be the best. If you want to see your n900's system files through ur computer, download and install windows scp on you computer, and mad developer on your n900. Works perfect and is much easier to browse. You must have wifi to do this.

Re: How can I free up rootfs space and remove uninstalled app files/folders?

uninstall apps that you dont need, removing the extras-devel repositories removes about 10mb, but I dont want to do that because I like using the apps there...anyone have any other suggestions?

There are ways to free up a lot of space by moving some system files to the n900 system, and linking them to rootfs, but thats very risky and makes the n900 run slow so I wouldnt recommend it. Im just looking for ways to delete unneeded files

Also, that boot video with the shaking hands is like 10mb i think if u wanna delete it, or replace it with a smaller vid

See the link on the right-hand-side of the page for "Power Search"? That's the simplest way to find answers to this type of question. The first link I got was http://wiki.maemo.org/Free_up_rootfs_space which should have most of the useful information on the subject.

Re: How can I free up rootfs space and remove uninstalled app files/folders?

I have reflashed my N900. Before that I had a lot of apps and free space in rootfs was 63MB. After reflash File Manager still shows 63MB for apps.... My N900 is empty (I have formated internal memory via file manager too) and doesn't have installed any apps :( How can I fix that?

63mb is normal i think..u probably didnt download any devel apps so ur rootfs was never used..but u shud be okay with 63mb.

You are fine; there is nothing to fix. You were fine before you reflashed. Flashing is something you need to know, so it wasn't a waste of time.

Re: How can I free up rootfs space and remove uninstalled app files/folders?

I forgot to write my main problem - I can't install app that is bigger than 1MB (During installation it shows "Can't install" or something like that (I have a Polish version of maemo) ). I trying to install apps that i had installed before reflash. I thought that low memory is the problem... :(

Sorry for my English :)

OK. I noticed that problem appears only with apps from extras-devel.. And after installation of "AbiWord" i have only 40MB left, so after few apps my free space will be extremely low...

Nobody does had the same problem? With that storage I'am able to install only few apps.

OK. I finally (at last ;) ) noticed that I can't Install all that apps that I have installed before the reflash. So old apps must be still somewhere in memory. But where I can find it??

After Install few apps I have 3MB of free space. I have tried to reflashing again but the problem remains the same. There is any solution for this problem or I must simply go to the Nokia Service?
