Where is my pretty good charging solution?
What I want is this: a two- (or, hey, ideally four-) port USB charger (device that puts out power on USB port).
Something like this. Small, two USB ports, folding plug. And then a couple of nice retractable USB cables. Finally, some USB charging tips, that convert the USB cable into a plug for my N800, Treo 650, GPS, iPod, ... Then, I can carry a cable or two and whatever tips I need, and maybe the AC adapter, and I have charging goodness wherever I go. My problem: the two-port charger can only be found on the site I've linked to above, and on the manufacturer's web site. I can't for the life of me find a similar device available retail anywhere. And then, the only charging tips I can find are for proprietary cable systems (such as iGo). I'm hoping the shared brain here can point me to where to find such things. And then maybe we can put the answer in the wiki. |
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
If you're looking for a portable/travel solution, what about this? Works with Nokia phones so should work with the 770/N800 and you can get tips for most phones and also for other electronic devices.
Just carry one battery (with one AC charger depending on length of trip) and all the tips you need for your devices. |
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
Actually, it's not hard to find a AC-USB adapter. I was after one with folding prongs and at least two USB ports.
The thing I'm having surprising difficulty locating is USB charging tips. Anyone? |
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
USB charging tips are such an obvious idea. I hope no-one pointing me at a source of them isn't an indication that no-one makes such a thing.

Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
There are many such modular charging solutions (eg iGo), but I see no reason for them to use a proprietary cable (like this one). I'm looking for charging tips like this one, but that attach to a regular USB cable
|
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
? This is not proprietary. The modular plug has a USB connector. The middle cable is a old-style Nokia adapter. The tip is an old-style to new-style Nokia adapter, which works on the N800/770.

Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
I would rather the middle (extensible) cord had plain USB plugs on the ends. I don't only want to charge my N800; I also have a GPS, a GameBoy, an iPod, and a Treo 650 that I would like to be able to charge. Seems like the best way to do that, if it is available, is tips that go on regular USB cables.

Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
Well you cannot charge the N800 via USB so this is a moot point. You could always pick up a retractable USB cable, which is what I use to charge my other devices.

Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
No, I'm having difficulty making my point clear, obviously: I'm looking for a supply of tips that go on the end of a regular USB cable, that then supply power to a device. Like the iGo or the gadget we had a picture of in this link, only with the middle part being a regular ol' USB cable. Then, I can carry one or two retractable USB cables and tips for all my gadgets, and I only have to find a computer to recharge any of those devices wherever I am.
And then, if I can find somewhere to buy the AC-USB adapter with two ports, I can carry that as well if I want. So: not trying to charge the N800 via USB; trying to charge it via its regular ol' charging port, via an adapter that turns a USB cable into a N800 charging cable. Clear? |
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
As mud. Notice the little box on the USB charger? That's a 6V booster.
|
Re: Where is my pretty good charging solution?
I'm not at all clear what you're saying, or how to make what I'm saying any simpler. I have many devices. All can be run from 5v (I note that my Nokia N800 charger puts out 5v). I'd rather avoid proprietary single-use in favor of standard and multi-purpose.
The best solution I can imagine, then, is tips that go on USB cables that turn them into charging cables for particular devices. I'm not even sure what you're saying about that charger. It's 6v. Presumably, it charges a little faster. You know, great. But I'd still prefer the standard and general purpose, and I can't put that any more clearly. So: Does anyone know of a source of USB cable-charging tip adapters? |
