firmware question, when i changed product code to install generic firmware on n95 (set product code back after upgrade) i had a issue with GPS and sent the phone to nokia and they sent it back saying incorrect firmware which = no warranty. does the same apply to n900?

Go for it. The flashing process is perfectly smooth and painless, just take a backup of the phone immediately before doing it and you can be back up and fully running on your new firmware in under 10 minutes.
When I flashed mine from UK to Global firmware the flash itself took 2-3 minutes, then started the phone and it spent approximately 5 minutes restoring everything and redownloading all my applications. Once that's complete, your device is in exactly the same state as before you flashed it, except using the global (and updated) firmware.

This is unclear. With your N95, changing the product code is a definite warranty voider, and always has been.
The N900 doesn't need a product code change though, all you're doing is installing a new firmware (provided by Nokia) using the flasher tool (provided by Nokia) onto an N900 (provided by Nokia). I've spoken to one person at Nokia Care who said that changing the firmware would void the warranty, but logic (along with the fact that the tablets-dev page specifically states you're authorised to use the firmware versions it presents once you enter your IMEI, and this includes the Global variant) suggest otherwise.

Ok, Ok, I think I have an answer!! My phone just reset, you know, how they usually do every now and again, but I thought what the heck, I'll call Nokia and ask the progress of the minor update!

Anyway, it appears that only some countries and even then, not all users in that country have managed to receive the minor update. This is an issue and apparently most UK and some Finland users have not been able to get the update as we all now!!

So, they guy at Nokia has confirmed that they know about the issue, and that there is a major update coming last week of Feb/First wek of March. What they will do is merge the minor update with the major update so we will all get everything in one go.

So it seems we may have to wait a little longer, but they recognise the issue and we will get it eventually!

Just thought I'd let you know what I was told! :)

frustrated uk user. am now thinking about flashing. but what i'd really like is transparency ie what sort of schedule for release and what are the differences.

even a rough statement that the target is to roll through all country varients within 3 days or something would be enough to allow educated techie end users to make an informed decision.

prob will give it until the weekend then go generic.

anybody tried just changing the update url to remove the 203 etc success or failure?

ok thanks. i checked and see its not editable in the gui. guess could try edit in /etc/apt directly. but not before backup.

on subject of backup/restore and reflash.... is this really saving most thing ie apps. list of repositories. address book. im plugin configuration. text messages etc? and does it touch photos music etc. sounds good esp if wanting to go generic.
