Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

I have disabled all catalogues apart from the Nokia ones, I have deleted about 12 applications and I still have not got enough root space (about 38.4mb free). Either my device is abnormally chewing up root space (which may explain why it has been acting so totally crap last couple of days) or there has to be a more sensible allocation of root space by Nokia. Can't have to delete like 15 apps each time there is an update.

For everyones information, there are inly three new binaries available:

USA: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin
MENA: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8.003_PR_COMBINED_003_ARM.bin
Global: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

There is no, I repeat, NO UK variant of the firmware available. The latest UK version is still:

UK: RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11.203.2_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin

The question is, will I damage my phone if I try to install the Global binary onto my (UK) hardware?

I suspect that Vodafone is to blame - they will be developing the UK unbranded version in parallel with the UK Vodafone version, and if the Vodafone version gets held up in approvals then us unbranded users will also get hit

You won't amage anything installing the global binary - several people have done that already (nobody knows what the difference between the regional variants is anyway). And I doubt it's anything to do with Vodafone - the last 203 update came out several hours before the 205 update.

Is that PC software? if so, my monitor is out of action so no PC at the moment...

When I run apt-get upgrade it says:

The following packages have been kept back:
hildon-initscripts

Okay my device definitely has serious problems. Disk usage app is showing 42.6mb free and I still can't instal. I thought it was meant to be 41mb to have enough space. Actually I am not sure I understand what this diskusage means. It shows free 38.4mb (root:42.6mb). What is the 38.4mb?

1. my system slows down suddenly very often, i have to restart the system

2. when bt device is connected, the wifi connection randomly disconnects.

3. the battery drains very fast (10% within 20 min)

Yes it is :) - but normally by clearing enough space and being prepared, means you should be fine for OTA - not sure if hildon is affected, (Well that specific one)... there is a list somewhere. (And a thread dedicated to posts related to that part)

I had this same problem when I first got my phone (about a month ago) and tried to use the NSU to update the FW. If you look at the screen closely I think you'll see the Nokia sign (which is initially on a white screen, but then on a grey one) disappear. That's about the same time the buzz happens. I think it's basically the phone switching off and then it starts up again trying to boot and the cycle repeats.

Some people recommended charging the battery in another phone, which I did, but that changed nothing. In the end I was able to flash via USB (Windows XP). I realise you've already tried this and it didn't even work, so not sure what to suggest. I just wanted to say that I don't think your phone/battery is charging in the current state it's in.

Does anybody know if this update or the incoming PR1.2 will contain a fix for the shitty USB connection which pulled out with my charge lead today?

I have no idea what hildon-initscripts are but I have a fully charged battery and 55mb of root space free but no update is shown. If you cannot suggest anything, I guess I will see if the update shows tomorrow.

Unless the update includes tiny nanites which will crawl into your N900 and rebuild the USB connection (I suspect not - the changelog would mention these), I'm guessing neither firmware update will be able to repair physical damage.

can now set the device up as region English (Australia) not too sure what this entails just yet

What do you get from Settings->About Product

I'm on 2.2009.51-1.203.2

Specifically do you have the "203" variant, or a generic fw?

Does anyone know the difference between the UK firmware and the global generic? Keyboard mapping? anything?
