i am with vodafone but my phone was obtaned from onestop(carphone warehouse) and came un-branded with version 203 so i cant blame vodafone. i can though blame vodafone for shutting down there email service and for the outgoing smtp servers that dont work. heehee. hopefuly we will see this tommorow. :)

generic simfree handsets carry global firmware.

205 is voda product code, firmware currenlty is the same as global but in the future if voda wants to add anything to it like a logo..etc they can as they have their own product code hence why the firmware shows 205 in the string

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

(reporting live from uae!!) hi all, this is the first update that bricked my device :). Earlier updates were really smooth. This update actually installed and rebooting message for the device also showed up, but when the device restarted, it never got to the desktop, instead it used to progress to the nokia's connecting people video and than rebooted again. I tried removing and inserting battery and trying again but same behavior. So this also became my first time that i had to flash my device (using windows 7 32 bits). Flashing the device was awefully simpler than i had imagine it would be, just 2 downloads and a single console command line did the magic (but someone tell me whats with this asking for IMEI number while downloading the bin file??).
Btw, to my surprise, flashing does not completely remove everything from the device. My contacts are still there, bookmarks too, all songs are there. But my installed applications are all gone, but will install them no problem (rootsh to go first of course).

I dont know if speed has improved or not, but here I noticed something good: i launched the media player and started listening to songs, and browsed few websites like wired.com, gmail.com (full version), and the most processing intensive google wave, and there was no feel that anything was slow. My earlier experiences have been that media player skipped when i used to be browsing, but this time it kept playing smoothly.

So it was a good experience overall, although few hours were scary ..

wish u all good luck updating :)

Ps: writing this on my freshly flashed and shiny n900, showing 75mb on / !!

Not so. Mine is a Generic Simfree handset, but it has the 'UK Unbranded' 203 product code firmware, NOT the global firmware.

There appears to be no info out there about what difference there is between this version and the Global version.

My handset was from Nokia retail UK - unbranded, unlocked, from Nokia. It has code 203, not global firmware (yet...)

I can guess this may also be a placeholder for future. Considering switching to global but may wait until tomorrow first.

This rootfs things is a PITA. WHilst I could move files about I was worried future package updates could fail due to the sym links. I ended up removing several apps, with qt4, google latitude & midori significant contributors to rootfs usage.

No update for mine, bought from work (CPW) but im not overly fussed. Way i see it, id rather other countries test it first, so im aware of any potential issues etc. Tomorrow morning when i wake up and its there (OK, thats more hope then fact) i'll know its all safe to update.

Of course, if it was a biggy, full of cool stuff, then maybe i wouldn't be so forgiving!!!

i mean the firmware is the same as in no change but location settings are in place like default lang/keyboard settings etc

UK O2 here as well with no updates yet.

As far as I know o2 has no branding for this device just yet so I (possibly incorrectly) assumed it would be the standard firmware.

I'm running 2.2009.51-1.203.2

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

yesterday is succeeded to brick my device by installing some more thingy from the extras-dev.(installed a ton of apps already and never had issues so far, but i was warned expected this sooner or later)
But this time it was to much, and it just kept rebooting over and over again.

anyways, a reflash solved all issues and brought it back to live.
(insiders joke: wanna laugh?
the "u" key when connecting the USB is the one on the phone NOT on the PC keyboard omfg!)

After that i could put back the backups and install about 400mb of apps.
Rebooted and all worked like a charm so i called it a day and went to bed.

Today I was glad to find the new maemo update and installed it.
No issues and all looked ok. Just before i ran out the door i re-stalled battery-eye which was not yet in my last backup archive.

About an hour later, i noticed a terrible drop in battery power.
Had not fired up battery-eye yet, so i did to take a peek.
But it did not seem to start. (found out it sorta did, but took a very looong time now)

after work i played around and found battery-eye not useable working, and my cpu was taking a 100% most of the time. took ages to start, and the tabs did not seem to respond either. whole device became slow.
Uninstalled battery-eye, all back and fine again!

now, i really like this tool, so how can i get it back to working?

even though i bricked yesterday, problems clearly arised after new fw update icm battery-eye.

Do i need to wait for the maker to update?
I read other people having no probs with it after the update..

Just confirmed Google Video calls work with Mac, I didnt initiate the call though, but it didnt work before the update and the picture quality is much much better. Improved video calling...yeah Id say that it is a significant update...does anyone need cheese to go with their wine? ;-)

I know you are right.

I will try anything, but if i see that the update is 16.2MB and my free space is 41MB, i think that there is no space problem... maybe something else...

A message that say how many space i really need, could be a good idea.

Regards.

i completely agree - but remember the downloads are probably compressed :) (It also depends what you have on your system, and how much needs to be extracted/downloaded/installed.....) can differ between people :)

I reckon it's the tracking and tapping software GCHQ insist on installing on all UK smartphones - why else would there be a specific firmware for the UK only? ;)

I still don't know if this will help. There's definitely no harm in getting that and charging your battery to full to see if it makes a difference.

But I'm wondering if there's things you can try in the meantime. I'm curious as to why yours won't go into USB mode. What's your OS? Do others know reasons as to why the device won't connect in USB mode?

Edit - Ok, just read another thread where someone states that N900 won't go into USB mode if the battery is too low. So looks as though the battery could be your issue.

Can you be more specific. Are you saying someone with a Mac initiated a video call that you received from your n900? If so, what Mac and what version of OS X were they using? And did they use iChat or Google Mail in a browser? If the latter, what browser and what version? According to Google, they're browser Talk plugin doesn't support Snow Leopard. Thanks.
