Edit word documents - still not possible?
Like i see...there is still no possibility to edit MS Word documents???
No one knows some news about it? I have few things that i dont like in N900 and this is one of them... |
Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
abiword has been in extras-devel for quite some time now, and it should be able to edit .doc files (not sure about .docx).

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
Must try...

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
Install easy debian and you should be able to edit them and convert them to pdf. It IS SLOW, but you can't expect it to be really fast it's only a phone. But work OKish.
Full office editing suite in your pocket? What more do you want? A cup of tea and a sandwich? |
Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
Yeah Open Office through Easy Debian isn't too bad - slow to load and sluggish when editing at times, but perfectly usable...
Abiword should do the trick for you though... |
Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
I just received my N900 today. I clicked on the Word to Go and it installed it, then asked me for my first and last name on the screen where you select to activate, buy, or begin trial version. I enter my name and click the trial button and it says i need to enter a valid email address. But there's no field to enter it. How do I begin the trial? Thanks.

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
Why not just get yourself a Google account and upload the Doc(X) to Google Documents? You can read it in "mobile" mode, which works well on a small screen, or edit it in regular mode. The only issue, if you can call it that, is that imported DocX files will export back out as Doc. It works fine on my N810... I can't see it being an issue on something with 3G connectivity. Time to move into the cloud... that's what connectivity is all about.

Personally, I don't have enough need to view Office docs to pay for Quick Office. If there was a version that would edit files as well, I probably would buy it. But, until then I'll manage without (Google docs works pretty well for occasional use). I'll pass on the tea and sandwich for now, thanks.. |

It takes less than one minute to start, indeed. And it's free.

Openoffice via easy debian is very good! QuickOffice is not the same as openoffice - it's like having microsoft office in your pocket with ALL of it's features + more. OpenOffice can export files to PDF which is quite handy at times! |
Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
My 2006 P990i does it well and fast. Is it too much for N900?

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
OpenOffice handles docx. On the other hand, why use docx to begin with? Whenever I get one of those from someone I explain to them that it is much better, for backwards compatibility sake, to set their Microsoft Word editor to always save in doc format. They usually are happy to learn that and readily comply.
Edit: Also, since Microsoft Office now supports ODF, I always send ODF files myself. |

I found that usefull for me: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=45027

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
So basically there is no real useful way to edit ms office docs ? that sucks. android and apple and every one else has this working flawlessly. whats our hold up? i am greatful for the work being done on abi word and open office etc: but the word is that they are rather slow and not too easy to use. so where is our user friendly office app for maemo 5? it really seems like Nokia just stuck us with the bare basics of a smart phone and dumped all the heavy lifting in maemo.org's lap. sad.

Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
well the problem is that this platform is pretty new, barely 6 months since n900 was released, android has been released for over a year and iphone for a few years. Native Office editing app will come dont worry, and when it does it'll be better than both android and iphone. in the meantime open office is perfect can handle documents fine.
also dont forget .doc is microsofts own format, they dont hand out the specifications to their formats to anyone, thus its even more difficult to create a .doc editor! |
Re: Edit word documents - still not possible?
@rash.m2k: what will be better than both android and iphone?
c'mon we're not doing marketing here, let's ease up on the hyperboles and superlatives. |

http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian#Install_instructions: Basically you need to install that application (for which you need to add the extra-testing repository), and then run that application which will download and install openoffice (i.e. easy debian). Probably a good idea to plug n900 into the wall socket while you are doing this as it's going to be downloading alot and working alot - in total about an hour so you won't be able to do anything else with your phone during this time. Once done and openoffice icon will appear - run it and wait for a little while (it takes time as it's a full blown Microsoft Word app like on your dekstop PC) |
