What are these rpm vs. deb threads going to achieve??

Ultimately we're not going to be privy to all the facts behind the decision and why it is made, nor are we going to change it!

Nor are we going to change Nokia's mind whether or in what form the n900 will get MeeGo... If they didn't care would they be reading this forum???

I personally am happy to wait and am looking forward to an interesting future :) So far, Nokia have not let me down, and so far the track record with n900 love has been good IMO.

And for the rest of the non-n900 world, MeeGo can only be a good thing!

Here's to the future

I don't think they're necessarily going to achieve nothing. You're right that they're not going to change the decision itself, but there have already been people contemplating leaving the community over this, based mostly on some very out of date and no longer valid perceptions of what RPM based systems are like.

There's a lot of ignorance of each of the two major packaging systems from people who mostly only use one. If some of those gaps in knowledge can be filled in, fears put to rest, and real problems solved, we'll all be better off.

Talking about stuff is good.

So has your RPM shipped yet?

I called my RPM dealer's customer service, and I got "Sandra" on the line. She told me that Maemo is already using RPM packaging in the Freemantle release that runs on the N97 mini, so I don't know what the fuss is about.

For me the switch will make me believe less in the future of Maemo. Maemo leaves Debian for Moblin. Maemo leaves the public for Intel. Yes it is strong symbolism and I think it is important that Nokia get it.

The debian tools and the strong link to Debian is for me of the key features of Maemo and it looks like many feels the same. Meego will be less..

Why will they do it?

They might have an effect if:

Nokia was not aware of the potential downsides/backlash from the RPM switch.

AND

Nokia reads the threads and is made aware of the discontent, particularly from developers.

AND

Intel is willing to back down on wanting RPM

I'm a developer, and I dissapprove of the switch to RPM

Deb/Apt has *much* longer history on these classes of device, and broader existing platform support.

If RPM was the tradeoff to Intel to keep Qt as the toolkit of choice, I'd say it's woth it. But still a disappointing development. Better Qt/RPM than GTK/Deb
