Touchscreen Problem in N900
Hi Guyz,
I am very much disapointed with my device N900. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:( I love mobile phones, i usually buy something which is new and that has great exceptation. But always whatever i buy there will be some problem. So as usual my in my story......today its turn of my N900. Few days back all of a sudden i observed few unsual behaviors like 1) extreamly difficult to tap the menu. if i tap 20 times, 1 or 2 times it gets highlighted. but stops there, menu will not be opened. REst of 18 times desktop starts moving here and ther. 2) Response of my device was very slow. for this i flashed my device, and updated to 3.2010 from 2.2009..... but didnt helped. Instead another problem added. :(:(:( 3) If Menu opens, i cant get back to my desktop. Earlier, it i tap an empty area inside menu, it used to take me back to desktop. Now its not. I have to press power button then choose END CURRENT TASK. Did anybody faced this problem. Any solution available for this? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Another thread :/
End current task doesn't appear in the menu, so you're doing something wrong, the menu opens up with one press here, and I have ~160 apps installed. |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Are you sure that your touchscreen didn't get uncalibrated? Go to Settings / Screen calibration and try to re-calibrate it...
|
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Never heard of such a problem.
You know that it is a resitive touchscreen and you have to push a little bit harder then on iPone, ... ? I would recommand you to send the device back to Nokia. |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Do you have the extras-devel and extras-testing repositories enabled? Have you installed any apps from it?
|
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@zwer
Ya i tried re-calibrating.........but didnt worked...... I thought i have installed some Devel app so its behaving like this. But even after flashing i am having same problem. @MohammadAG End Current comes as a applet for me, with Alarm and flash light things etc., I have to do that if enter menu item, otherwise there is no way to go back desktop. @ToJa92 I recently flashed my device, So only few apps are there. I dont think i have some apps from there..... @Scharel Will try out few things suggested by guyz.....if it works as it was earlier then its fine.....otherwise extreamly hardtime for me any other thoughts...... |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Can it be a hardware related issue......
According me it was fine till 3 days back...as per my knowledge nothing happnd as such which broke something.... |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
End current task only shows up on the power menu (systemui), flash light shows up in hildon-status-menu, both of which can't be opened in the menu
|
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Have you dropped your N900? Touchscreen ribbon might got loose hence barely registering touches. If it's not the calibration, and the software, there is only hardware problem left. Do you have some certified Nokia service center nearby? Maybe you can take it to them to take a look.

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@zwer
No yar.....its not fallen from any where.....i am taking care of it more than my girl friend :) As per me after installing few set of apps from OVI store this started happening.....also few from other repos...... @MohammadAG I am not getting what your saying. could u please elaborate.....? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Or
some kind of **** virus in my memory card causing these? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
"If Menu opens, i cant get back to my desktop. Earlier, it i tap an empty area inside menu, it used to take me back to desktop. Now its not. I have to press power button then choose END CURRENT TASK."
Open the menu, press the power button, it goes back to the desktop without clicking end current task (which doesn't even appear) "End Current comes as a applet for me, with Alarm and flash light things etc.," "press power button then choose END CURRENT TASK End current task only appears when using the power button not the status menu Self contradiction Edit: One more thing, there are no viruses on linux |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
ya u r right.....
its actually when i open some app......to close that if tap on "X".....it gets highlighed but doesnt close. so will press power button and do end current task. Also if i tap in empty area in the menu, desktop will appear. now its not happening..... |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
watch youtube vids and learn how to use n900 :) thats the best advice I have for you. Seriously!
|
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Dude why are you taking in a wrong way......i know how to use my device. i am using this from 1 month. so i know what happens when i press what. that what i am telling its missing.
Somebody simply just cant tell something is missing. ok you tell me...... 1) when you try tapping your menu icon our desktop, will it start moving? 2) Inside menu area, if you tap on empty area what happens? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Others...
Have any other thought on this? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Which variant firmware did your device have before you flashed with V3? When I flashed with V3 firmware I experienced some problems so I would suggest flashing with worldwide v2 firmware and then OTA update to the newest firmware. U might want to try also flashing the eMMC (if you do have to flash eMMC first and then firmware) so that everythings back as when you first bought your device.

1) it only starts moving if I press and slide my finger. 2) it only goes back to the previous menu / home screen if I tap outside the icons (on the corners of the screen, to be clearer). Hope it helped =) |

Here is the problem what I have with the screen on N900. I wonder if this is a bug (or feature?) in the OS. If I try to fill the screen in Xournal with lines, like in the picture, on top, where the menu bar is, and on the left side, I have to press a lot harder on the screen to get it to draw. I can draw everywhere, just that on the top and on left (where the white is) I have to press harder, just normal touch pressure with the stylus doesn't work.
Can anyone else try this? Here is the picture, full size: http://ioanghip.googlepages.com/Scre...222-130800.png |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Resistive touchscreens are naturally harder around the edges as that's where the two sheets are connected and at that place you cannot flex them as much as you can in the center. Tho, it shouldn't be that much different as you are explaining it.

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Installed and tested it - the top part definitely seems less responsive, and I had more skipped lines on the right side than on the left, contrary to your image. However, when I load up the preinstalled Sketch I don't have skipped lines with the same amount of pressure on the both sides (although it has a small margin) but it suddenly stops registering lines no matter of the screen sensitivity. Something similar might be happening with Xournal as well, but it just recovers `faster`...
Maybe Xournal is just not grabbing the touchscreen events fast enough, and since when you get to the edges you definitely have lesser flexibility (tho not that noticeable) it just doesn't register the touches on time... |

I hope this is just a software glitch, and that they'll fix it... |

1- no, things wont move at all and only the menu will display if no app is running, otherwise the dashboard/task-manager appears showing all the running apps 2- of course we go back to previous or the desktop depending on where we r. maybe you should return it or go back to the shop where u bought it from? Or do you have accessto someone else's n900 so you can verify that your experience changes or not. |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@abubakar and @ioan
could pls tell what is the firmware version and the variant you have? |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@rahulg247
When i bought my cell, it was v1.2009....and US variant. I upgraded using NSU, from India. So i doubt what was the variant for 2.2009 firmware version. i think i might be a blobal release variant but not sure. For flashing i took 3.2010 global variant firmware. can somebody confirm, in 3.2010 global variant version, if you tap on empty areas will it take you back to desktop. (Is that funcationality thr in this variant?) |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@rahulg247
Hey Rahul, What is that eMMC? and will eMMC content will be same even after with another OS version? |

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
I tried flashing eMMC and OS but still the problem exists.
touchscreen is not responding .... |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
maybe a hardware issue? Since you know how to flash, why not try just some other variant, like the one for middle east. I am running that and running pretty good. My version is 3.2010.02-8.003.

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Will try that also....& ll get back to u.

@madskillz6: try re-calibrating and use the stylus! tap the center, you need a good aim to calibrate it better. then reboot your device. |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
never hear that kind of problems.

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
@gabby131
I tried that too.....just want to update on what i am facing now..... 1) Experiencing difficulty in tapping the menu button. I have to tap for a long time to get into menu. rest off times, desktop starts moving. 2) Inside menu, if i tap the empty area, i was getting back to desktop. now i cannot. i have to open some app and then close that to go back to desktop. 3) if i go to setting --> About product , product information is displayed in the bottom portion of the screen which covers 75% of the screen. if i tap on empty area above that(rest 25%), product information was going back. Now content in product information keeps scrolling if tap on the rest 25% etc.,, |

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
just found this as i was looking for answers to the exact same problem,
ive had my n900 for a little under 2 months and all of a sudden after a blissful few weeks of no problems whatsoever it started to do this exact same thing;i go to press the menu button& barley can get it to come on & sometimes as im sliding through the desktop pages it seems to get stuck with one half of the screen showing a bit of one page and the other a bit of the next; also when this is all happening tasks seems to go slower & touches seem to get random Gosh i really thought i was the only one that had this problem; strange thing is it happens randomly throughout the day & for varied amounts of time & after its hissy fit it seems to go back to normal like nothings happened one confession though i HAVE droped my n900 only once and only about a week after having it ( i know :( im terrible ) ,wasnt a bad or high drop but was on hard wood flooring, even though im not sure if this was the cause beacuse even after the drop things still were going fine for a few weeks. can anything other than a drop cause this? i just feel that due to it working fine for quite a long time before all this and me not doing anything diffrent in that time to cause this then there must be another explaination! thanks all! |
Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
just had a thought though & its a strange one, could the problem be anything to do with the accelerometer?? a strange idea i know but maybe someone who knows this stuff will know? beacuse im no wizz kid when it comes to computers & software/hardware so im not even sure if you could link somthing like the accelerometer with the touch screen :confused:

Re: Touchscreen Problem in N900
Well i had a fun time with my n900 today almost was in tears with how bad things were getting could not get anything to work & i was almost going to just give up & take it to a repair shop BUT.....
i did somthing which i feel so silly not doing in the first place; since ive had the phone ive had a screen protector on & just decided to rip it off in the slight hope that it might fix the problem & to my shock everything seems to have gone back to normal!! i guess i didnt think of taking it off sooner beacuse its never given me a problem up until now & i still find it strange how all of a sudden the screen protector could start interfering with the touch screen but then i guess maybe if dust or dirt managed to get inbetween the two layers that could cause the problem anyway if others have this problem & have one on then take of the screen protector maybe change to a new one or sumthin then see if that helps,even though im sure most would try taking the screen protector off sooner then i did, boy i feel stupid :confused: but at least im happy in having my wonderful n900 fully working again! |

Rizenknight, you saved my day. I had the same problem, and your solution solved it for me. I haven't think of that solution, taking off the screenprotectoc either. Hope the problem will not return. Thank you very much for sharing your experience! |
