Re: 95.1MB free space in RootFs

i havend read all posts .... sorry if this has been asked before,...

is there a specific folder where the apps being installed??
is there only one or there are more of them??
is it possible to move this folder(s) to mydocs or /home/user/ and symlink to it?? that would solve the "no space @ rootfs problem"

thx for answers....

Apps are installed to different places, depending on what they do, whether they're optified, what data files they include, etc. Moving them will also depend on the app - if it's a single large binary, library, or datafile, or a directory full of files, then it's easy enough to move. Some applications contain hundreds of files installed all over the place though, making it far more difficult.

And, of course, if an app has been optified then all of this should have been taken care of already.

I seem to have encountered problems since using the moveroot script, 7zip doesnt work now it keeps coming up with incorrect command line, any way I can reverse this without having to reflash my phone?

yea, this script also bugged up my phone. none of my themes worked after. I just ran the script as is, didnt mess around with any symlinks or change directories/folders.

i had to reflash. good luck..

Right reflashed my phone, and my rootfs is at 88 % used, havent got enough space to install the maemo update, is there any way of physically moving stuff from rootfs, also any way of actually seeing whats in it?

Re: 95.1MB free space in RootFs

There's the Python relocation script that makes it free enough to reflash.

Also, I find it very odd because all my updates were OTA, also, I updated other phones OTA and they worked just fine. With no 3rd party apps it should Just Work.

make sure you put it in root directory if using USB > mass storage
NOT documents folder

/home/user/MyDocs

unplug phone

then in xterminal:

root
cd /home/user/MyDocs/
sh moveroot.sh

i did that but now when i try to install an application or uninstall one it gives me a message "operation failed"

Re: 95.1MB free space in RootFs

Hi, I'm the author of the script and I just accidentally found this thread.
I'm glad that it helped (some of) you.
As some people have problems with themes and some forget to run it as root
I have modified the script to keep the themes on NAND and to check for the root user.

Upgrading the firmware OTA after using the script is supposed to work.
If you reflash you should run "rm -rf /home/var /home/usr" as root before using the script again.

will removing those directories after running the script make any difference?

yes, it would probably brick your device.
If you have run the script and then upgrade the firmware using the flasher,
those directories would contain the files from the old firmware.

However, I just realized that my script would automatically remove those old directories
(I've written it a long time ago...).
so please forget my statement in the previous post; you don't need run the "rm -rf ..." command.

Re: 95.1MB free space in RootFs

I have uploaded another script to revert moving stuff to /home (see http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Tanner#Sa...pace_on_rootfs)
I couldn't test it yet but if you're going to reflash anyway, please give it a try and let me know whether it worked.

Thanks a lot stevet68 for the instructions you gave and also thanks to Titan for the wonderful script.

Tried it after a full PR 1.3 reflash of firmware & emmc and it has saved me a lot of space on rootfs

Fresh after the reflash without any apps installed and just the default apps I had around 98.3MB free on rootfs but after using the script I now have 114.7MB free on rootfs without any apps installed.

This is freaking amazing. I will monitor the effect of this script on my daily usage and after I install more apps to see how it affects the phone in general.

Thanks again..

Pic below if you don't believe me.

Re: 95.1MB free space in RootFs

The script is easy and lazy solution, but he it works. There exist more universal script: "pkgscan.sh" - it allows you to optify any installed packages whenever custom or nokia ones (be careful while optifing nokia stuff as the script uses no blacklist so wrong decision about some nokia ones may brick your device) - of course you choose which ones to process - and optifies packages file by file which seems more safe than optifing whole directory at once, as directory symlinks makes problem when using ".." as since moving and symlinking another directory becomes "one level up". The script also supports partially working "undo" ability, which you may want to use if you update the packages (since not doing it may leave unneccesary files in /opt/relocated but its not a big problem because it's out of rootfs), or if you know you did a mistake (do it better before you reboot as booting even a partially bricked device without reflash is really hard however possible eg. if you have multiboot install and booting something not maemo works) so doing a mistake is not yet bricking the device.
