Couple N800 questions from a newb.

Okay first off, I LOVE this thing but, I do have a few questions that maybe some of you can answer:

1) Is there an online, printable version of the manual located inside the N800?

2) Is Nokia making this a long term investment (to an extent) to where I will be able to add software upgrades to my N800?

3) My N800 picks up some great signal from Wi-Fi but, there are times, such as when I'm at college, where I KNOW there is OPEN/free to us Wi-Fi in the school and yet, my N800 doesn't even find it at all, while others around me are picking it up on their laptops. Is there a way to change this?

4) Will there be (in the future) a wi-fi antenna to make the ability to pick up the signal stronger? what about other future accessories that are on the table?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I appreciate anyone willing to answer.

Thanks!

The 3) and 4) sounds a bit strange to me, because my N800 is easily the most sensitive wi-fi device I own. It picks up neighbours' wi-fi from 200 meters away. It's much more sensitive than my wi-fi router which has an external antenna, for example. At work it doesn't disconnect until I'm pretty far away along the road, my laptop w/usb-stick wi-fi disconnects before I've left the building proper..

Just use the one you found in your N800 ;)
Copy the manual to a memory card and print it with your pc.

Nokia will provide new software versions! Then you are able to flash them to your N800. How long Nokia provides updates for this device is not well-known. (You won't have to worry about that!)

I can't believe that! I am using a 770 an a N800 and had never problems with signal strength. My N800 finds earlier a Wi-Fi than my notebook with an intel 2200BG onboard chip! Perhaps someone else could help you with this problem.

I don't think that it is possible to extend the N800 with a additional antenna!

Thanks guys for the replies.

I'm a little bit confused about the signal thing now. I agree it's sensitive. I rode through my neighborhood and picked up everyone's Wi-Fi (and kept it a long time even moving down the road). So, I know it works. However at college it just doesn't pick it up. My palm T/X didn't either. Yet, everyone's laptops work. It's a strong signal at the college with multiple nodes set up all around campus.

Maybe I'll take it to an IT professor and ask him about it. My buddy who is an IT major at the college had no clue as to why it wouldn't pick it up.

Maybe I can find this info and post it here for anyone. However if anyone else has an idea, let me know.

does wi-fi use channels that maybe this N800 won't pick up?

You're not the first to report problems detecting or connecting to *open* WiFi networks (eg. hotels, cafes, work etc.) - search the forum and/or bugzilla (https://maemo.org/bugzilla). Future updates will arrive for the N800, hopefully these will fix whatever problem is affecting the WiFi connectivity.

Thanks for the reply. I'd LOVE to see an update to sort of fix this. I have a feeling this isnt just mine but rather ALL N800's. I think it's just a matter of, many people dont find themselves in one of these unique wi-fi networks or dont realize that there is wi-fi around them.

Hopefully an update will take care of it.

Thanks!

Some open networks work, others don't. I have no idea why (not). Maybe it has something to do with allocation of IP addresses?

Civileng: I used to do this for APs that don't broadcast their name... Find someone with a laptop and get the AP name off of them. Setup a 'favourite' in the WiFi settings under that name with whatever other settings the AP has (ie WEP, etc). It should appear in your list now.

This worked on the 770 at least.

Thanks Hedgecore. I'm not familiar with what an AP is but I am familiar with WEP. I'll find out and see if it works! Thanks!

AP = Access Point.. its the wireless router you connect to

Re: Couple N800 questions from a newb.

i totally understand your problem with the wifi in your campus.... in fact it happpened to me on my n 770. so what i did was to set up a connection in the profiles with the ssid and just add it. then it will automatically connect and recognize it. for example. my university ssid was unthsc... so i went to conncetivity and added a new profile with that name..... and leave everything else empty(i mean the security)... then automatically it will connect to your university s wifi.
hope this helps

Was wondering what long-time 770 users wih Nokia experience think/guess might possibly, perhaps, conceivably, be the time-frame of a firmwarre update for things like WiFi and the SD/SDHC support? Are we looking at a month or two or is it more likely to be six to nine months or even a year or so?
