Keep screen on while charging?
Hi,
has anyone found a setting to keep the screen on while the unit is charging? I'm going to write a slide show/digital photo frame application but there is not much point if the screen is going to black out. Such a pretty screen, it seems sad not to make the most of it! Thanks, James. |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
There really should be two sets of display/power management timeouts - one when on battery power and a second when on mains power.

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
There is an osso API call that will keep the screen from blanking. Actually, there are two separate functions:
osso_display_state_on(...) osso_display_blanking_pause(...) Both take the osso context as arguments. See these docs: http://maemo.org/platform/docs/api-b..._Devstate.html |

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Feh, either way - I want a photo frame app. Even if it's going to drain power like there's no tomorrow. My N800 seems to spend most of it's time sitting on my desk, plugged in, playing music. It'll be much nicer with some pretty pictures too!
I don't know what kinda time I'll get this weekend, we'll see. j. |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
There should definitely be a built-in setting in the control panel that would let you enable screen always on when on external power.
(But I found a "workaround" a couple of days ago.. for some reason the LCD screen would immediately come on again after the timeout period after just a second off-time, if charging with the internet radio on.. I don't know if this was just a fluke or not, but it effectively stayed on all night) |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
All - see bug (enhancement) #1046 which requests the ability to keep the screen illuminated while on AC power. Vote for it if you think this a good idea.
As for the workaround, it's probably a bug! :) |

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Hi folks,
thanks to derf in #maemo irc for help on this! That guy really knows his stuff! He wrote a daemon to change screen brightness depending on charger plugin state, but it only worked on Nokia 800. I hacked it to work on nokia 770 / IT2006 and keep the screen on for an hour when charger inserted. If anybody wants to help test this, contact me for .deb, but i won't release it generally without his permission. See the display-dim and blank timeout thread for instructions to increase your dimming and blanking timeouts manually on the Nokia 770 or 800. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=5704 Cheers :p Arnim |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
That deamon sounds very useful. I would rather just have the device automatically keep the screen on if the charger is plugged in, and behave as normal when not (that is, the one-minute setting I normally use). If this is how it works then that's definitely for me. You say you have a version modified for the 770, but did he (derf) release that N800 version somewhere?

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Use quiver.
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/quiver/ Along with the power demon ( both 770 and N800 versions are available at http://home.arcor.de/arnim.sauerbier/software.html ) my N800 sits playing FM radio and displaying all my photos full screen. Rick |

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
I figured it out by poking around this guys web space.. he now redirects to a diffrent server..
Here is the link to the page with both n800 and n770 http://pupnik.de/800powr.html |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Well this kind o works, it keeps the screen on longer but not all the time.. any one know how to change the settings on this to on all the time when plugged in ?

Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Well with quiver in full screen slide show mode it does stay on all the time making a nice digital photo frame for your desk..
When not in quiver it doesn't keep the screen on all the time but longer.. So if your looking for a photo frame app this combination works nicely.. Im now converting all my images down to 480 pix high specifically for my n800.. at that height there about 120k each.. that means tons of images on a single SD card.. I love this n800 more and more every time I find a new cool app for it. But now my wife is going to want a n800 or n770 for a photo frame :-/ |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Read the first post on this thread http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=5704
A value of 0 in the timeouts gives infinate time. What you do is set a timeout ( from control panel ) without power and then again with power inserted. the demon remembers both settings and changes accordingly. Rick |
Re: Keep screen on while charging?
Cool! Ill try it out.
Update , works great, i went for a hour because I usually cant go for over a hour before using my n800 for somthing.. Still saves some power when I sleep :) |
