Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin

Hello,

To connect to my company MS Office Communicator IM protocol, I was hoping to get the SIPE plugin support for Pidgin to run on Maemo.
I tried the following instructions, but it gives up when not finding a C compiler: http://sipe.sourceforge.net/install/

Can anybody confirm there is no way to get this to complie on Maemo 4?

Thanks,

Vince.

OCS 2007 R2 plugin would really be useful! I think I looked in to the same plugin at some point and ran into the same problem as you did.

Yes! I agree -- this would be extremely useful!

I just installed an Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin from extras-testing. Works GREAT!

Cool!
But looks like its for Maemo 5 and won't work for the N810, right?

Re: Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin

I have submitted pidgin-sipe for diablo (Maemo 4, extras stable) and fremantle (Maemo 5, extras testing).

One request for Maemo 5 users: if you install the package from testing then PLEASE remember to submit your Karma vote for the package, otherwise it will rot in extras testing forever :-(

You need to install the OCS plug-in. It is in extras-testing (with all the warnings that comes with it) via App Manager.

Question: I installed the plug-in for maemo 4 on my N800. When I run Pidgin, I was expecting to see it listed in "Tools" - "Plugins". I did re-boot after installation.

pidgin-sipe is a protocol plugin. Those don't show up in that list.

Please go to "Accounts" -> "Manage Accounts", press the "Add" button and then choose the protocol "Office Communicator".

On my N800, it lists three accounts that I can choose from:
Google Talk, Jabber or Sip.

Do I select "Sip".

AWESOME!!! Thanks for posting this plug-in so quickly.
Installed and connected to my company in no time. Now I can work late from home :(

Keep up the good work!!!

Strange. That sounds more like OOTB Chat application, not Pidgin. Pidgin has a dozen protocols by default (Yahoo, Bonjour, Google Talk, etc ...), plus now this Office Communicator via plug-in.

I have Pidgin Internet Messenger version 2.6.6-Onix1 installed on my N800 (OS 2008- Diablo).

Installed Pidgin-sipe on N900. How do I log in? Don't see the option to add Office Communicator account under VoIP & IM accounts.

Re: Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin

You guys are killing me. Seriously....

pidgin-sipe is a protocol plugin for Pidgin! It will therefore not show up under Settings/Accounts!

Here are the step-by-step instructions how to connect to your Office Communicator account:
  • Open the App Manager
  • Add the "maemo.org Extras" (and "Extras testing" for fremantle) repository
  • Select Install
  • Find "Pidgin Internet Messenger" and install it
  • Find "Pidgin protocol plugin for Office Communicator" and install it
  • Leave the App Manager
  • Open the applications menu, find "Pidgin" and start it
  • In Pidgin select the menu "Accounts" -> "Manage Accounts"
  • In the dialog press the "Add..." button
  • Select "Office Communicator" as protocol
  • Enter your Office Communicator credentials and server settings (if needed)
  • Press "Save"
Pidgin should now connect to your Office Communicator account...

Let me repeat it again, in case you didn't read the beginning of this message:pidgin-sipe is a protocol plugin for Pidgin! It will therefore not show up under Settings/Accounts! If you want to connect to your Office Communicator account you have to run Pidgin.

Re: Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin

The confusion for me was because every other protocol (haze/ aMsn etc) appeared in the settings menu.

Thank you for the instructions

Re: Office Communicator plugin for Pidgin

I've now got this set up and working myself. Very useful thing to have! Any idea how much work it would take (or if indeed it's possible) to have full integration into the built in Presence/Availability & VOIP accounts for the N900? It would be very nice to have. But just having OCS working in Pidgin is fantastic. I can work as late as I want!

Oh, wait...

Both are under consideration but will need some effort
  • OCS VoIP support: Pidgin 2.6.x added V/V support, so it would be possible. My guess is when V/V support is added to the Windows port it will happen pretty fast :-)
  • Maemo Conversation is based on the telepathy framework. There is currently work ongoing in the Sipe project to allow non-purple backends, but the schedule for a native telepathy version is open
  • telepathy-haze adapts purple plugins to the telepathy plugin. I have tested succesfully the pidgin-sipe + telepathy-haze combination with Empathy on a Fedora box. But on Maemo it fails, because the Account setup doesn't allow entering "," (comma) and "\" (backslash) in the user name which are essential for most OCS credentials
Hope this clarifies things for you,

Connection error

I'm getting an error message "SSL read error" when trying to connect. Debug says the following.

(10:27:21) util: Writing file accounts.xml to directory /home/user/.purple
(10:27:21) util: Writing file /home/user/.purple/accounts.xml
(10:27:26) util: Writing file prefs.xml to directory /home/user/.purple

(10:27:50) connection: Connection error on 0x3f7e10 (reason: 0 description: SSL read error)
(10:27:50) account: Disconnecting account...

I'm using Pidgin 2.6.6-1nix0 and OC plugin 1.10.0_1maemo1 on my N900. Any ideas how to start tracking down the reason behind this?

After few weeks of use on N810, Pidgin now shows all buddies as Offline, but I know they're not all offline.
It seems once a buddy is offline, Pidgin no longer checks status.

Has anybody seen this before? Anyway to fix it?

Thanks,

Vince.

Anyone, any idea? I noticed a plug-in update since the initial release, I wonder what this update was about and whether it contributed to this issue.

Would it be possible to use the pidgin-sipe + telpathy-haze combination with the disclaimer that the user would have to edit the config file by hand to set up the account? There are no commas or backslashes in my own company setup anyway.

Then I guess it should already work for you. Just install the haze account setup UI (or whatever the package is called).

FYI: it should be easier in the future

In addition to not trusting the offline/online status as mentioned above, I also see that some offline buddies show the "out-of-the-office" message of other buddies ...
I'd say there are still quite a few bugs to make this app usable, unless it is my company OC setup that has issues, but I'm not getting this problemes using OC from work.

Thanks,

Vince.

A bug in the buddy list handling has been discovered in 1.10.0. If you have some buddies in your OCS buddies list that don't show up in Pidgins buddy list even when "Show Offline Buddies" is enabled, then you are affected by the bug.

I've pushed fixed packages to the repository.

pidgin-sipe never left extras-testing for Fremantle, because it never got the required 10 votes. If you want to change that then you can do your bit here.

I just pushed 1.11.2 which includes a fix to the long standing NTLM authentication problem. The connection to the server has been rock solid for the past few weeks on my desktop (pidgin) & N900 (Conversations/telepathy-haze).

Unfortunately it seems no longer possible to compile (pidgin protocol) packages for Diablo :(
So this release is only available for Fremantle (Maemo5).

I think this has been addressed before, but is there a way to show the OC contacts' availability status in my address book (when i sort them by "availability")? I think it would be useful if we could connect the OC data with the company contacts in the address book....

NOTE: OC contacts are only visible in the address book if you set up a VoIP/IM account with OC, i.e. via telepathy-haze & pidgin-sipe, not when you use pidgin-sipe with Pidgin!

When you go online the first time with your OC account your OCS contacts will be automatically added to the address book. Then you have to open each of the "old" address book entries, open the menu, select "Merge Contact" (I guess, as I only use finnish on my N900) and choose the OC contact you want to merge in (it is usually already the top one of the list).

As long as you don't delete the OC account the Address Book will remember the merging of the entries, i.e. you'll only have to perform the above actions once.

I'm been using this app for a while and quite regularly, but I wished I could get either a sound or a flashing led to alert me when somebody starts a new chat with me.
Going in the prefs, I keep on fiddling with the Sound settings, but I don't get any sound.

Has anyone got that to beep on new chat?

Thanks,

Vince.
