I was presented with a reality check: wiki-editing/voting etc.. do you really want to go that far?
(...)
At each point, I was offered a choice of "No, this is involved enough for me".

Yes, well, see... I know a little bit about horses... :D

Oh, this starts all types of wrong. I know a little bit about horses. Horses doesn't like to be dragged into stuff they're not comfortable with, new stuff. They want to do things in their own speed, when they've looked at something from as many angles as they need to. And if you try to push a horse into a horse transport, you're tough out of luck. You have to let it go in there when they're ready. Much like me.

What I want to do, is minimize the stress you feel, and yet lure you into reporting bugs, voting on brainstorms, etc, without noticing you're leaving your comfort zone. if you don't have to stop at each of these points, you may pass them more easily without ever stopping to think "do I want to start using bugzilla". When you feel like describing a bug, you should be able to do so without crossing a bridge.

Trying to convince someone to sign up to a mailing list is, from my experience at school, much like a chore. You don't want to be spending your free time doing chores you don't need to. However, tell people that there's more interesting information about Meego on the mailing lists, and the mailing lists change from a chore, to a carrot. But yet, you may still stop up and think, do I really want to do this? If all you needed to do was check a checkbox in your settings, [v] subscribe to the developers mailing list, [v] subscribe to the counsil mailing list, it won't seem as natural to think "do I really want to do this?"... You just try out a setting, for a while.

So, as today you can adjust what level of information/involvement you want to be on. But with a single sign on, integrated graphical user interface, it should feel more like forming an information stream than subscribing to new web sites/services.

Ah, I think this cuts to the core of the disagreement. I don't personally believe anything of the sort. If you don't have any involvement in a community, you can hardly be considered a member.

The Maemo sphere is broken up into three sections: maemo.nokia.com, Maemo @ Forum Nokia, and maemo.org. Only one of these sections is intended to provide support to pure end-users, and it aint maemo.org.

Of course, but until such a point they aren't community members.

I think that is splitting hairs.
Who knows, if Bob joined maemo.org at the first day he got his N900 or 3 weeks after?
Maybe he was only reading unregistered first, and then after registering he could provide immediately help for "less-skilled" members, because he have had read so much.
But in the end it doesn't make a difference how we have to deal with new users:

At any given time I'm actively participating in three different forums on completely different topics. I've run my own on occasions, and stood as mod (and intermittently admin) at one place for 8 years. So registering for a forum was the most natural thing in the world for me.

It's not just a registration we're talking about, but IMO more about embracing people who DO want to get involved in multple ways. Your forum registration is a forum registration regardless if it's SSO in the background, no change there. The question is what does anyone gain by not having a unique identity with regard to the many faces and aspects of the community ? I'm all too familiar with this problem, having two (three if you count the mailing lists) 'identities' because someone already took my aliases in other maemo.org subsystems. That's not diversity - it's chaos.

Now that is a valid reason for wanting something by way of single identity. Finding that A N Other has nicked your personal id in one of the bits of the site must feel close to a form of violation (not to mention the confusion it causes). As someone who is big on integrity, I would find that horribly challenging (yes, those dozens of google references in some pretty weird places really are all me!)

I'd support a system that automatically refused the re-use of a username existing in one part of the system from being registered in another unless it was by the same person.

But I do still appreciate some value to being actually made to do something before I can access all areas just because I registered to a forum.

That could be as simple as adding "traps" to a profile via questionairre. My thoughts are to put it on the devices: http://maemo-daemons.org/MeeGo_User_..._Framework.pdf

You say Nokia handed maemo.org to the community.

However, maemo.org has
Terms of Use
Privacy Policy
Contribution Guidelines
that read as though maemo.org is a Nokia website and of course the domain name is still property of Nokia
Domain Name Registration .

So maybe you meant to say "hands off"?

And maybe we can explore Texrat's thought to free up maemo.org?

Shouldn't we be getting some kind of voting token ahead of the vote? Or does that happen right at 23:59 UTC on March 23?

Only one guy Thanked that, so I assumed that was the extent of the support.
